[Resolved]  Lifeline Hospital — Unethical practice

LIFE AFTER DEATH – real life (rather death) experience

This is not a philosophical statement on one's life after death, this is about how my wife, Padma died in a hospital in Chennai. Whatever I have seen only in movies so far, is experienced by me.

We were living in the UK for few years; our family includes me, my wife (Padma), and our 7 yr old son and 8months old daughter. My wife had a symptom of ventral hernia (slightly bulged abdomen), we had consulted General Physician and Surgeon in the UK and advice was that she needed a surgery to have a mesh to fix the problem with a few weeks rest. We were also told that this is not an emergency and it can be done anytime though earlier is good. In fact the surgeon whom we consulted in UK talked about an example of a lady having this done for 30 years of the symptom. My wife did not have any specific pain or something except a small discomfort of bulgy abdomen (like a 2 months pregnant lady) and she was in her normal routine of taking care of our children, taking our son to school, household work, etc.

We were planning for Christmas vacation in India in Dec 2007, we thought we will consult some 'good' doctors over in India and take a decision of when we will do the surgery if required and possibly felt doing in India is good because of family support. We have got a reference of Dr J S Rajkumar of Lifeline hospital and we booked an appointment to meet him.

We landed in Chennai on 14th Dec 2007 for a three weeks vacation, met Dr Rajkumar at his city hospital (Rigid hospital) in Chetput on 15th Dec 2007 (Sat) at about 730pm. We have explained him the background, shown him all the comments o[censored]K surgeon, medical reports related to my wife pregnancy, deliveries, etc (she had delivered both our children normally). After few minutes of assessment Dr Rajkumar told us this hernia requires laparoscopic surgery and we can do this next day itself. We were little concerned initially of getting this surgery done the very next day (particularly we were still not out of jet lag and she was feeding our baby) and got convinced with the 'salesy' words given by the Doctors. To quote a comment from the Doctor "she will run in two days time and can lift two suitcases and you can return to UK as per your plan on 3rd Jan 2008"). Also Dr Rajkumar told us that he will be on travel for 3 days from 17th Dec and moreover he was teaching Post Graduates on 16th Dec about laparoscopic surgery and let us get it done on 16th Dec.

Then my wife was put into all sorts of equipments in the hospital (in the name of assessment); blood, urine, ECG, MRI and so on and the tests were conducted till about 11pm on 15th Dec. In fact they have opened the labs after closing hours and got the test done and handed over the test results to us. They had some problem in the ECG and we were told that ECG can be done on the next day at Lifeline hospital.

We were asked to report to Rigid hospital at 5am in the morning. Think of it, we went our residence around midnight and my wife had rush on some food to keep compliance on the fasting 8 hrs prior to surgery. After preparing for the hospital visit that night and a couple of hours sleep (3 hrs or so) we reached Rigid hospital on 16th morning at 5am or so and from there we were transported by an 'ambulance' to Lifelife hospital in Perungudi (outskirts of Chennai).

We reached the hospital at 630am, paid some initial advance for the surgery and we were given a room. Padma went through some more basic checks like height, weight, etc. Padma was taken to the operation theatre at about 10am in the morning on 16th Dec. After the laparoscopic procedure she was moved to post operative ward at about 12 noon and I have met her in the afternoon to say a small hello when she gained consciousness. Dr Rajkumar met us on 16th Dec afternoon and he in fact congratulated me for successful surgery and said he has used proceed mesh (costly one) and advised his staff to move Padma to normal ward in the evening as she had to feed her baby. But, Padma was moved to normal ward only on 17th Dec morning, she was on IV fluids as per normal post operative procedure.

Padma started to develop some fluids in her abdomen which duty doctors / surgeons have 'rightly' observed. She was put in some series of tests on 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th – tests include multiple ultra sound, multiple CT scans, pricked her abdomen and taken fluids, she had a long tube through her nose overnight to collect fluid for tests, etc. We were told the fluid is normal after surgery and it will be alright after she passes stool, etc.

In the meanwhile Dr Rajkumar returned from his travel and seen Padma on 19th on 20th Dec evening along with other surgeons. He made an assessment and he told me that he might want to do one more laparoscopic surgery to find out what is the fluid about. He wanted to do a surgery on 20th Dec evening itself, but he could not proceed as the hospital has given solid food that afternoon – hence anaesthesia could not be given. (lack of co-ordination among departments, time lost here, may be she could have survived if they have did the surgery on 20th itself)

On 20th Dec night, fluid started oozing from Padma's abdomen stitches, after the duty Doctor's assessment she was shifted to ICU. We really did not know what complication she developed in the ICU.

On 21st Dec (Friday) morning around 830am I was called in to the ICU to convey that they are going to perform a surgery and I had to sign "high risk consent", they were telling this in front of my wife (just think of a patient hearing this before the surgery). I was just shocked at that and had no options to sign whatever they wanted. I said "all the best" (my last conversation with my wife) to my wife and she was taken to Operation Theatre.

While I was discussing with the Doctors at ICU, the cashier in the hospital kept on calling me on my mobile. When I met the cashier he asked for Rs.60, 000 to be paid immediately and I told him take Rs.40, 000 and will give you the balance later in the day. Bang a reply came, "you have to pay the money to for me to give clearance for surgery". When I expressed my unhappiness about the comment, he insisted for me to sign a piece of paper saying that I will give the money later in the day. (What money minded, in-human attitude!)

We had no news from the hospital on their own about the surgery, I had enquired the staff nurse and visited my wife in the ICU and learnt that she had a diagnostic laparotomy (open surgery) and there was hole in the intestine which was fixed.

We have meet Dr Rajkumar at about 3:30pm on 21st Dec and understood that there was a duodenum rupture and he has fixed it, at the same time he removed the mesh which was fixed on 16th Dec. She was also paralysed and put on ventilator as she was waking up. He explained it was between life threatening and beauty so they addressed the duodenum rupture problem. What we were puzzled were, how did the rupture happen? for that explanation given were
- it could be due to ulcer. My wife had no evidence o[censored]lcer in the past. Explanation given was 40%+ cases o[censored]lcer is silent and there will be no symptom (I lack medical knowledge to appreciate this)
- it could be due to post operative stress (so many test post operation without any explanation of what we were doing could have created the stress on Padma is my argument)

On the same night (21st Dec) at about 930pm, I was called in to the ICU and Doctors conveyed that my wife condition is critical – her pulse is high, BP is low and they were attending to her. I insisted on talking to Dr Rajkumar immdly, but they refused to connect me to him at first and finally managed to speak to him. Dr Rajkumar came in around midnight and explained that the lungs are getting affected (shown X-ray of white patches on the lower portion of lungs) and she was the most serious patient in the whole hospital that time and they were trying their best. He also said, it will need another 12-24 hours of observation before they can say anything.

We were completely panicked and just waiting outside the ICU and praying for Padma's recovery. We had to argue with the security outside the ICU to gain access to the Doctors to know her situation (no courtesy from the security personnel, who just don't understand the situation)

At about 4:30am in the morning, my friend gained access the Doctors in the ICU and came out with the low face to tell me that Padma's condition is worsened. Again I tried to reach Dr Rajkumar and the hospital says they don't have his contact number (just can't understand how they can behave like this). Finally after some hue and cry Dr Rajkumar came on line to tell me that he is not God and don't think his visit can do any thing different. I cried, begged him to come over to give some ideas to his team to recover Padma. He came over at around 6am and said they are trying everything possible, etc; but her end came quickly.

The end came to our beloved Padma at 6:30am on 22nd Dec, throwing the entire family to rude shock and a life time sorrow. Our "LIVES AFTER DEATH" of Padma has changed for ever.

I can now think of so many questions retrospectively;

1. Why did the surgeon perform the surgery the very next day of consultancy, that too for a non-emergency one like this? (Padma had just travelled many miles, she was not even out of jet lag.) Was it for money? Was it for them to get one more sample for their post grads training?

2. Did the Doctors made proper assessment on Padma's fitness for surgery, frankly did they even had time to go through the reports, after the tests till 11pm on the previous night for next day 8am surgery (particularly when the reports were with us till 730am on the day of surgery).

3. Patient communication and counselling. Isn't it important to communicate to patient and their relatives on the development of patient condition (fluid collection started from the next day of laparoscopic)

4. Did the absence of Dr Rajkumar for three days post the first surgery is one of the reason for this disaster? Were the other Doctors not able to diagnose or take a decision? Were they waiting for Dr Rajkumar return?

5. What is the real reason for duodenum perforation? My wife never had any history o[censored]lcer to the best of my knowledge. Why did the hospital take so much of time to react (5 days after surgery) when such a crucial thing like perforation has happened.

6. Was there any issue in the initial laparoscopic procedure which has caused the perforation?

7. Careless attitude by hospital staff? – my wife sex was recorded as "Male" initially and corrected after I told them. The staff was not even apologetic for this, he rather asked me "why didn't you inform". Can't he make out with the name Padma. Think of it, if he has changed the blood group from A+ to B+; that is it!!

8. Will anyone with basic common sense ask for high risk signature in front of the patient? I was asked to sign just minutes before surgery in front of my wife.

9. Is the hospital money minded?: They were demanding money on gun point almost.
a. Prior to the first surgery the cashier said please give Rs.30000/- more for him to give clearance for surgery
b. When my wife going for second surgery I was told by the cashier again, please give Rs.60000/- for clearance for surgery
c. The hospital charged more than what was told for initial laparoscopic, without even communicating to me increase in charges
d. The final "bill" was just on letter head, without mention of currency, invoice number, etc. I had to insist on a proper invoice later.
e. I was given to understand that they even made arguments on ambulance charges to send my wife dead body back home.!! (making money on the dead body also)

10. Why the hospital did not made me to talk to my wife when she gained consciousness after the second surgery? If not anything else, I could have held her hand. Even a criminal gets an opportunity to communicate his/her last wishes. Am I or my wife worse than?

11. FALSE reports - After all these hospital sends me false reports (on Jan 11, 2008 – three weeks after my wife's death) :

a. They had mentioned she had LSCS (caesarean section) and large scar due to LSCS. When my wife delivered both the babies normally, how does one record as caesarean and how there will be scar when there was no caesarean?
b. The hernia was mentioned "incisional hernia" – when there was no incision on her body how the hernia is categorised as incisional? It was actually ventral hernia. Don't think one can replace any term with any term just like that!
c. Most importantly, the surgery was performed on 16th Dec 2007, the report said 17th dec 2007

12. MISSING REPORTS - From the hospital records Doctors notes were missing for 16th and 17th Dec. The first report is available for 17th Dec at 8:36pm. How come there are no Doctors' notes for about 36 hours after the surgery? Isn't it fishy? Did something went wrong on the first laparoscopic procedure?

Our entire family is still mourning and trying to reconcile the fact that our Padma is no more. My 7 year old son is aware that is Mom is not there, does he understand? My 1 year old daughter is too young to know what has happened. What will her questions be in future?

My sincere advice to all is
a) Do not get carried away by advertisement / TV shows / big buildings
b) Please do not rush
c) Do your own due diligence, particularly when things are not an emergency
d) Try and understand the medical terms, do research prior
e) Please ask questions, at every stage.
f) Don't say "I can spend anything"
g) Know patient rights

I am still not convinced that Padma has died after a 'simple' laparoscopic surgery? I am deeply upset of what has happened to Padma and for what is happening to us. What I could have done (or not done) which would have prevented this. What is that we can do to prevent this in future for others!!!

Please join me in making awareness to others. While India is trying to woo many international Customers in the name of 'medical tourism'; first let the authorities make regulation on the health care system and take care of Indian people first.

Read others experience as well

Our medical system must understand the differences between MEDICINE – TREATMENT and HEALTHCARE. What we get most of the time is medicine for the symptom while we need healthcare.

I just wanted to express to this wounded man a compassionate word. Your story is so sad, I am so sorry that you had to endure this terrible loss.
its absolutely correct mr sitaraman, people like them dont know about the values of life and blaming only doctors especially dr j s rajkumar, i dont know what coming for them by telling wrong nuisance like this, you explain them in good words but i wont like that, i will be very much worried of people saying like this bad news about a great doctor, .., i am got treated many hospitals in salem and i operated in chennai a famous cancer institute for a adrenal mass, but it could not be possible, dr j s rajkumar operated me in a very good excellent brain and removed my tumour and saved my life from death, , ... not only for me but also for many many cases, so dont be like this, ... bye, ...
Sripriya, if that's her real name, is probably working for the so called 'Doctor' J S Rakumar.. No normal person would go out the way to defend a quack..
Dear Friends,

There is no doubt that Dr.J.S.Rajkumar is one of the excellent medical professionals and the most qualified in India. He has wide range of testimonials for his records. It is good to have such doctors ...

But recently there are lot of compliants from patients about the services offered by his hospital. Most of them pertain to insurance and other expenditure that the hospital presses on.It is understood that the hospital puts the patient to spend from their pockets despite the same being covered under insurance in all other hospitals and advise the patients to claim later. This puts tremendous pressure on the patients who thinks major part of medical expenditure would be under cashless service. There is criticism on the behaviour of the service personnel like nurses, duty doctors, medical superintendent etc.

Dr.JSR cliams that lacs and lacs are provided as discounts to AIDS and cancer patients. What we are not able to understand is Lifeline provides discounts like 20%, 25% etc manytimes patients receive 50% discount on CT Scan which is actually Rs.7700.Why cant the hospital provide better prices at the beginning itself and instead allow such cheap bargaining in percentages??

It is high time that Dr.JSR ensures that his excellence is reflected by his team members also.Let his service reach everyone without any hassle.
I would support the complaint. infact i have heard of Dr. Rajkumar, one of the leading business man son from chennai has lost his life in Lifeline hospital where he had come to reduce his weight. concernd people should come forward to register these kind of cases and publicse in media. today Appollo hospital is one money minting group, I had a servere cough went for check-up oneday in BREATHE EASY CLINIC they did x-ray, saw the report and said u've asma BEGINING STAGE and gave me medicine with all inhalers for rs. 3000 the doctor asked me where r u working and my designation and asked me to do scanning before even getting the scanning report he had already asked me to pay the amount an d gve me the medicines. Believe me I paid My expense was 12, 000.00 single day I went in the morning around 9.30 and wlked out at 7.30pm. I used that medicine till it got exhaused for a month, it is almost a year now. I felt so bad why are they so money minded...I felt like they have sucked my blood. just for the sake of publicity they are doing lot of other social activities. But there is something called law o[censored]niverse one day they or their families would pay for this. People who are recommending rajkumar and other doctors should first know what is really happning. A LIFE is so DIVINE I[censored] CANT SAVE IT ATLEST STOP killing.
I really feel sorry. & i pray that padma's soul rest in peace. When I go threw your mail i cld understand the pain u've suffered with the life line hosptial,
There are lot ot appreciation coming for rajkumar, ther is no doubt it is all his own comments,

if the people who have supported rajkumar is true do u people have any explanation not the treatment, but about the service they have offer, torturing for payment, that idoit will not give clearance for a second surgery if payment is not paid. I wld have given my slipers to him. they shld provide full support to the family. What is the necessity to do the surgery why padmas's husband was not informed a bt the complications earlier with all the test performed. HELLOW RAJKUMARi[censored] r reading this or somebody close to him read this pls tell thim to STOP DOING SURGERIES there are many opther ways to earn money not at the cost of other lifes.

ONE DAY U'LL ANSWER THE LAW O[censored]NIVERSE -U'LL BLEED

Nireesh
Yes Dr. Rajkumar is and Life Line Group of Hospitals is number one Faurd... All the posting on favor or rajkumar are not true and should have posted by his keeps or agents... I will tell my personal experience happend last week... i was asked to take a surgery for a small fissure in my annal... thank god i had 2nd consultation with apollo hospitals and got to know that this is so common and can be cured by an gel or tablet... that in life line hospitla told that its and emergency adn it would cost around 45K and need not worry as u have insrance...

please avoid lifeline... please... life is not a game...
Dr.Rajkumar and all his supporters, you will realise the pain Padma's family is facing only when such an incident happens in your own family.

I wish a RAMANA or an INDIAN THATHA really gets alive and teaches the RIGHT LESSON to all involved.

God bless you all. Everyone reaps what he sows - you may still lead a jolly life, but dont forget your sins will not let your children lead a peaceful life

Padma's family - our heart goes out for you - iam also convinced tht something is drastically fishy about the first surgery

Have you filed a case against the hospital? Makesure you have the right BIG support when you do tht - the hospital seems to have lots of stolen money to turn the tables. God be with you and your children.

Cheer up - your children are your world - take care of them - Padma will bless them from Heaven.
I would feel, media has to have the equal responsibility who broadcasting their advertisement, so that people would not be running behind them based on advertisement not only for this kind of issue because media is so powerful source to reach pubic. The media should have some checklist and approval from appropriate department from goverment to braodcasting, so that people should have a strong voice to register a case against fraud people who is doing public services.

Moreover, our government should feel shame on their part due to poor quality of service in GOVT hosipital, we do not know the proper way to pass on this further to punish fraud people.
Yes, I 100% agree with the complaint about Lifeline hospitals, Dr.Raj kumar is a cheater and running the hospital for money only, nothing else.
hello all, im 25+ girl with 110kgs, last year i visted lifeline hospital after seeing advertsmnt on tv...DR.rajkumr asked me to do bypas obesi surgry/ thy said neay 3.5laks ill charges for tht same, due to this morbid obesity im much deprsd so i thought of going to do the surgry but after seing durai's post i panikd so i decided to cancel that..can any one help me for the same?, still im in same weight, did so many crash diets, pills, tretments but no remedy...so if anyone can help me with good info plz mail me..cant go abrod/ midil clas finance problem...im having 3 laksh medi clim policy but obesity operation catgrsd in cosmetic cader...not having any hormon problems, did ayurveda tretments too but no recovery. hope i can get good solution.

MR.durai im realy sory for ur wife. how's ur daughter and son, past one year im praying for your family..sure god will help you. padma only gone physcaly but not realy..
Dr.J.S.Rajkumar is not cheater he is a good person noble hearted and helping minded person I am Rajkumar uncle's old patient now itself he is teaching me and talking me like his own relative.he is not a doctor for my family he is one of our relative. all the best for all your works uncle.i love you so much uncle.
Person like sripriya who is cheating her own husband will always say good things about her buddy. Such a shame
DR J S RAJKUMAR uncle is not a cheater, did gautam r u seen him, u dont say any body like this, , ... its true what R.jayashree said above, , , stop all coments fellows
Dei Saran.. that man saved your life so u r happy and telling him good man...

many many families are lost their loved one because of this hospital and their negligence...
To the fellow readers...
Hitherto I had not thought so bad about the INEGRITY of Dr J.S RAJKUMAR as a professional eventhough my dad faced death at his hospital ICU, I call it JUNKYARD, under his team's care.I used to think that it just happened because of our misplaced faith in him coupled with our wrong choices of hospitals, including his, before reaching him and he tried his best and we lost my father.'It is Our fate', I used to think.

BUT I WONT CERTIFY him as NOT GREEDY. HIS administration is one of the worst and facilities are very poor, costs are exhorbitant without maching with services and some staff are not good and they dont give proper billing for services which I have explained below in my communications to Dr. Raj KUMAR in the lone email id available in the bills[ the id in the offical website is a blank one as your mails get bounced] since the year 2006 feb after I lost my father on 21.12.2005 at his junkyard like ICU.Mrs Padma died on 22.12 ... NONE GOT ANY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OR REPLY YET...

SINCE he choses to be silent to all my mails and I saw this forum, when I was searching what is latest on him before sending this years mail I found this, expressing opinion on him I decided to make them public which were hitherto very private. Let others also decide the merits in these mails.People may ask why I dont go to court to seek redressal. Presently courts are not only function on the basis of rule of law . There are extra considerations. Dr. Rajkumar is well connected to say the least to manipulate things as some in this forum trying to bat for him.

Now After reading the complaints and comments and the police cases, chargesheets made against him by the authorities and public I tend to doubt his INEGRITY too. I never tried to see him again as there is no proper response to mails sent every year on this day in memory of my father and asking to send us our rightful SPLIT BILL and return any overcharges which never been given.EACH IS PENNY IS OUR BLOOD.His office loves to suck others blood with so much lust.

I say I DOUBT because my first impression about this Dr was not that bad. YOUNG, energetic, polite, god fearing[ or atleast that is what I understood] and really really hard working and risk taking .Eventhough I lost the greatest treasure of my life- MY FATHER -with which I have not yet come to terms with I wanted to give him full credit for his medical integrity which I dont see in many
[ I wish to use ALL but I use many becuse there might quite a few not belonging to this category, I feel]
of the city drs specially upper caste tamilians and upper caste telugu Drs.
[ I'm also a high casteTAMILIAN, so dont try to manipulate on this] .

It got some damage when the administration refused to behave in just and proper manner and the poor facilities at an exhorbitant cost which I have explained very well below in my communications to him.

I remind the supporters of Dr. J.S. Rajkumar that these hospital are OWNED by him. and if anything is wrong there the responsibility also falls on him as he likes/ loves to take full credit for his good deeds.

But see for yourself what happened to us.
I also warn that here might be somevested interests against this Dr who might orchestrate propaganda as he is not liked by many a veterens in the field for his risk taking, I was told and understood.

But the cases I read are genuine and similar to ours. And Dr. J.S Rajkumar does prove with these that he is no different from THE GRREDY FRAUDSTERS of chennai a.k.a Docters. THAT IS SAD . I FEEL FURTHER DEJECTED with these guys.No explitives will express my feelings. My strongest way to oppose these greedy fraudsters is NOT TO USE their services . For sripriya's comments...I told Dr. Shivkumar Nair of Mata amritanandha mayi Hospital at Edpally Kochin the following ...THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN in my life when coming showing compassion to his patients. He treated his patients with such an equnimity and loveing compassion I used to see. NOT A SINGLE trace for GREEDINESS in his attitude you can see with a remarkable track record. Well this is not the place to argue for him. I agree. told him when he asked me why I dont select a chennai cardiologist even for this consultation as that would reduce unnecessary travel and expences when I visited him 1 year after my father's Bye pass surgery ...

"There are two types of drs.
1. Despite his best efforts the patient dies.
2. Despite his best efforst the patient survives. Both are DIVINE intervention. I say."

Chennai is filled with number two. mata amritanandha mayi is filled with no 1. So if death happens in mata amrithanandha mayi hospital I may accept that without question. with chennai it is surprising if the patient survives. One needs to cross all the number twos of chennai to REACH those very few Number 1 here."

With Vijaya and Kedhar at mugalivakkam my father met the no2s.

With J.S Rajkumar and about my fathers untimely death I thought he is in Number 2 and it was divine wish.
But information emerging make me to have a reconsideration on this, I feel.what more I can say.

CHENNAI is CURSED by the DIVINE . So the change is far off it seems.
PREY to DIVINE to bring change in chennai at least on this aspect if you are a believer. If not DONT GO TO CHENNAI DRs. SIMPLAY DIE AT HOME peacefully observing all your pain as the chance to eradicate all your past karmas, as Lord Buddha says

Dear Dr. J.S. Rajkumar,

One more year has gone since the fateful day of 21.12.2005 my father died at your junkyard like ICU.

From last year to this year you have been accused by two identifiable people who charged you of medical negligence and organ stealing etc against you. They were startling and unbelievable .And the case on medical negligence got approval from the panel constituted by AIIMS, New delhi. Are these conspiracies against you are your are culprit is not known to any unless solid evidence emerges except that there is some prima - facie as per the chargsheet filed against you.

As explained in the medical negligence case where you have promised some drastic reduction in weight to that soul which departed after your operation you have told my brother that there was a chance of 50% for survival if operation is done on my father at Vijaya and transported him in another cargo like ambulance without any Dr for emergency and changed your assessment to 5% after admission. IS this your standard ploy to lure clients to your hospital or what I really dont know. But I lost my father .

Further On these fresh lights I too would like to point out that YOUR OFFICE till date not give us the SPLIT bill for the patient Mr. S.SOOMASUNDARAM who died at your care on 21.12.2005 evening around 5.56 PM.It is a SHAME on your office. I guess they have swindled much of the money of ours on fake accounts and that is the reason they refuse to give us the detail bill for the money paid.

As I'm not equipped to understand and know the fact I leave it to your conscience to decide whether you neglected my father's health condition also and allowed him to die unceremoniously at your junkyard like ICU or u are not capable to handle such cases.

How many more lives are destined to suffer at your hands is not known. But if you are having conscience with your talent you can save many a lives at an affordable cost. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE A SWEETDREAM which has no chance of becoming reality due to the lust your office show for MONEY.

I lost and the world lost one of the best brains on this fateful 21.12. day in the year 2005. I deeply MOURN and I curse myself for not been able to save him at an appropriate place other than yours.

again. 1. I discussed about the HIGH rates without any reasonable facility for which I prayed your attention. 2.The junkyard like condition of ICU should be improvised, I have prayed. 3. The detailed bill which was not yet been sent. 4.We were told my Dad was under a 1, 10, 000 package for about 15 days. We
paid 1.10, 000 for 6 days treatment where it was claimed you have
waived your charges.I really couldnt comprehend how you could reduce
your prices when we have already over paid.It is sort of Jimmick, I
would say.I request you not to claim any such credit since you dont
give any such redcuction. You
are a hard working and highly talented and the torch bearer of what
your father and grandfather did to the society. But your hospital just
terrorises financially without providing required falicility for the
money collected. This do not put you in good light. ANY LUST FOR MONEY
will not bring you any worthiness to you in the long run.It will spoil
and is spoiling the family name which I wish should not happen . If
you have time plese read the attahced mail and do the needful and send
us our rightful split bill and return any excess( which I fear may not
happen as chennai hospitales are notoriously money swallowers and your
hospital doesn't seem to be an exception on this aspect upto this
moment and any change should start/come from your end). Thanking you. Sincerely, Narendran.S

this gesture and good samariton. The content
of this mail contains my observation about the condition of the
hospital in three aspects 1.The ICU, 2. The Administration and 3. The
Rates. There are some typos but other than them nothing need
to be changed, I feel. Personally
I feel they need your immediate attention. If you find some time to read
it in full with your hectic schedule it would be of great help. If you
do the needful that will be much more helpful. But I dont know whether this mail will reach you. Anyway it is my duty to send this as I want you to serve more and more people with more efficiency and more compassion . With love Narendran.S

-----Inline Attachment Follows-----

Dear Dr.J.S. Rajkumar,
I'm Narendran Somasundaram son of your patient Mr Somasundaram who
unfortunately died on 21.12.2005 despite your best efforts.

I must thank you and your team of Dr.s, namely, Dr. Durai Murugan,
Dr.GowriShankar and Dr. Vijaya Raghavan the nephrologist who
initiated the
dialysis.

Actually I wanted to write this mail in a happy note after my dad's
discharge from your hospital after getting cured completely which we
all believed to happen .

As you made in your observation before you enter into your OP on that
fateful evening the so called GOD has WISHed in the other way which
is still unbearable.Im not able to understand the whole meaning of
this in a spiritual way even though me or for that matter my dad are
not afraid of
death.

Except that Dr Vijaya raghavan who
prescribed a 24 hrs dialysis first
and subsequent ones after some gaps suddenly proceeded further and
continued the dialysis claiming that the patient was stable ---there
was
nothing unusual in the whole treatment I feel. I must respect HIS
opinion - even though I dont know the logic- since everyone in the
team wanted to save my dad.I still dont know what could have happened
if he had proceeded
as per his original plans.May be the same could have happened in a
delayed way or NOT too.

Anyway with all respect to all involved I wanted to share some of my
opinions about the overall things which I witnessed during my stay
there as the attendent for my dad...

I know my vocabulary woud have showed so much of my happniess had I
wrote this after my dad's complete recovery and it may not be so when
I'm writing this one with so much of sorrow and
dejection about my
dad's sudden
demise. But I request you to take this in the right perspective as my
intention is for the betterment of the all onvolved - the patients and
the medical fraternity.

Starting from the ambulance --the worst one ever one can find ---
which infact could have speeded up the worsening of my dad's
condition to the non ventilated ICU which further made him fast to
depend on ventilator nothing gave us pleasant feeling except your
force and confidence. We all beleived from your vigour that my dad
will return home safe which failed .I still couldnt comrehend why it
should have happened the way it has happened.

Anyway There are three things which need your immediate attention...
1 the ICU
2 the billing /the accounts
3the Rates/ the Charges

The overall condition of the ICU in which he was kept during the
whole period is much desired as
it is very noicy, stinky and untidy
and the AC was not kept in on all the time.I intervened the first day
but I stopped as there is no use in insisiting as people are giving
some lame excuses for their actions.

The hygiene condition is much compromised .

The nurses were very much co operative except one named Elizebeth who
was a real pain to all working there .She was very rough to all
including with us .All the time I used to pray nothing should happen
to my dad during her
shift .

The Dhanvandhri blood bank staff are so insensitive to the icu that
they were least bothered even after my repeated requests not to do so
and they were entering the icu with their fancy dress with so much
dampness and
wetness and sitting and conducting their money business inside the
icu with the attendents like me .For reasons better known to them the
nurses are not
able to rein on them from doing this even after my
repeated requsts.

With some experience in getting treatment for our family in a world
class super speciality hospital I know a little about the way the
icu's are kept .How sterile they would be. Nothing such I found there
in our hospital. The space is very less and they are trying to
accommodate many a
things in a verysmall place which makes it very clumsy.

The lighting inside the icu was very bad which was disturbing the
patient very much. If some one lying idle watching the TUBELIGHT with
open eyes or closed eyes - without any escape- will defenitely get
its bad impact, I
feel.

The matron of the icu wants to conduct her classes and teach the
nurses just a few steps away from the icu and the nurses wants to
dicuss about the patient just two steps away from the bed. There is not
much of a leg room
to
move around .

The wearing of the various protective cloths like face mask etc are
very much optional and patient as well as the workers are very much
prone to infection.

The ward boys and the security outside needs to be more sensitive to
their noice making and to the attendents requirements which is very
much lacking.

So many rules to GOVERN the visiters without much facility gives them
real hardship to understand the meaning behind those rules. There is no
place to stretch ones leg during the nights or stay in good condition
during day for the attendents and just one or two toliet for all
those visiting as
well as working .

I'm not against treating the HIV -AIDS patients but keeping them
inside the ICU with the others seems to be not that great idea, I feel
.I know atleast one was kept along with my dad .If some mixing
happens in that small room
since it is very much prone to it and a
nurse like elyzebeth who is
untrustworthy it would bring very dangerous results I feel.

And as I said earlier there is much improvements needed immediately
in that ICU for the benefit of all.If you dont mind I may say that the
ICU in our hospital is not greater than the one in any of the
government hospitals.

And I must say that despite with all these adverse conditions the Drs
as well as the para staff like the nurses and the boys gave a sincere
and
devoted efforts in their attempts to save my dad.

The second one is the billing section...

Despite their cordial and friendly handling of the people, which
happened in our case after my brother reached the right person after
so many phone
calls and personal visits and on the 7th day after the death of my
dad...this one is totally UNPROFESSIONAL.

Considering
various facts about the way one is charged for the
treatment and services in the hospital this section should work MORE
promptly and professionally..

In our case...

We STILL dont KNOW and have not been given what would be there in a
PACKAGE under which my dad was treated ...
( We were told before operation that our package is
Rs. 1, 10, 00and were asked to pay 50% before the start of the
operation. I must acknowledge that except for medicine and outside
test and blood we were not asked to pay in advance any amount.)

We were given a HAND written list of services and charges which
doesn't have any levearage for MEDICINE as well as the STAY of the
patient in the hospital .

Having done some research in the package system some time back for my dad
for his by pass surgery I have never come across a package which
doesnt give the minimum period
of stay in the bed-- pre operation as
well as post operation including in the icu.

When asked about this we were told that our hopital doesnt have the
icu within the package. It is really SURPRISING.

When we found out there are some errors in the billing which made us
to pay for ventilation as well as oxygen for the same period which is
like asking to pay two times for one and the same service which we
DID they accepted
the mistake and came up with another heading and were asking us to
pay more than what YOU have asked my brother to pay after reducing
some of your charges (i.e it came at Rs50, 000 after deducting the
advance was 60, 000 which my brother paid before getting NOC.)

It is like... ok you found out OUR mistake now pay penalty for that ...

When my brother asked them to come up with proper figure before
talking to you before he
leaves for his job they agreed. BUT DIDNT
COMPLY. MY brother left without meeting you, WITHOUT GETTING a
detailed bill which is the case till this moment .If I'm correct till
this moment--- The correction I make in this letter now is on
o6.02.2006.Till this day I guess my home didnt get the detailed bill
or atleast till 14.Jan 2006 the day I left home to pondicherry where I
stay put.

And they were not yet able to give us the split for the originally
claimed package ( Rs 1.10 lacs) claiming that that will disturb them
with tax people which could not be so as no tax man can charge for
mere quotations. As far as I know they may charge only on the ACTUALS.
I guess by not making available the detailed bill the accounts
department works overtime (sic) to make a100% tax free income from my
dad's death...

Even after my brother has expalined them and requested them
to
complete the whole process and get an appointment with you to request
for some help THEY
HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED their work . My brother left on 03. 01. 2006
without getting the complete bill for what he paid.

Please remember It is solid 2 weeks after my dad's death at our hospital.

Each and every penny we borrowed to settle our account on the dotted
date and time ...But we are not given a bll till this date...(I
surely believe from the way the accounts department works that I can
find out many more discrepancies and mistakes in the bill if I
have the split bill with me )

I dont know whether you are able to see any PROFESSIONALISM in this
even though the charges we paid are MANY A TIMES MORE THAN what I
would have paid in a world class hospital had I got that MISSED
opportunity .

3.The rates ...

I would like to see these two
-- the icu and the accounts --problem
with the charges we were asked to PAY and the payments received from
us.

No two things are alike, I agree .THERE IS NO NEED FOR COMARISONS.

But when asked why the rates should be like this I
was told that the rates of other hospitals like Apollo ete are taken
into consideration before fixing RIGID's rates.

With these as back ground I can bring to your kind attention some
startling facts which I told to Dr Durai murugan before I leave our
hospital with my
dad's dead body.

We know what my dad's problem is /was and what should be done and
where we must go for that.

Due to my dad's misplaced superstitious belief that he should get
operated only after we shifted to the new found house from the
previous one------ we were waiting. But we were never able to make it
as his his condition gone out of our control slowly
but swiftly and
our innocence complicated. He reached the new house as dead only.

To talk about the rates ...

I NEVER HAD any great opinion about the HOSPITALS as well as DOCTERS in chennai.

The HOSPITALS ARE NOTORIOUS and the DOCTERS ARE GREEDY AND DISHONEST
to their profession. This is my opinion formed after a decade and
half living experience in this city as a citizen and as journalist .

I never advice people to get treated in chennai instead I advice them
where to go as I KNOW atleast one.

But There are very few EXCEPTIONS .In some aspects your TEAM and YOU
are exceptional. YOU and YOUR team are atleast honest to what you
do.YOU people have sincerely tried to save my dad WHICH we didnt see
in the two hospitals were my dad was admitted before reaching you.You
and your team claim to be DARING and it is true too and many a

private docters of the city do not come nearer to you on this aspect
leave alone matching it.You can extent this prefessional daringness to
the rates too...If you ask me WHY????

...

During the year[protected] we did settle for one hospital named AMRITA
INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCS at Edapally Kochi for my Dad's By-pass
surgery .It took us nearly a month to complete our research .We went
there and talked with the best surgeon in INDIA who is daring LIKE
YOU and very much compassionate and forthright in revealing
information. My dad got operated there .The package included three
nights in the icu.Four grafts were done. As my dad liked the ICU as
well as the room I persuaded the docter to allow him to stay for
more days.Even through the package was for 10 days we over stayed for
5 more days .The total bill came to 97.000 INR and
we were returned
the balance money 13, 000 from 1, 10, 000 we paid.

The package hasn't changed much even today.

We were asked before billing whether we need any financial subsidy
which we refused to accept and told them the money we paid was much
much lower than what we could have paid had we opted for chennai
hospital without any gurantee for my dad's receovery. For the five star
facility and so much compassion to the patient we paid NOTHING I told
.When enquired I found out that they are not making any loss from
the money we paid and they make a little PROFIT too.

And for my dad's Diverticulosis too we had the estimation and it
was/is just peanuts when compared to the expenses we incurred in
chennai. Just Rs.43, 000 /-for the whole operation including ICU and
14- 18 days stay in the hospital, I guess. It is for the non AC
seperate
room. I dont need to repeat that the facility is UNMATCHED
.NOT a SINGLE chennai hospital can match their facitlity . Their care.
Their compassion and there Dedication and also their ability .

You are really talented. There is no doubt about it. You are daring to
save the lives .It is also unmatched. But some thing I want to bring
to your attention which need a positive consideration from you for
the benefit of all...

I dare to say this just because

YOU CLAIM TO TRY TO WALK ON THE EIGHT FOLD PATH...

I dont write this type of mail to Dr K. Narayan Reddy of Vijaya
Hospitall who cared less for my dad and more for the money we pay.The
nature will take care of him as well as the other one who blundered
just by keeping my dad at his nursing home without knowing what to do
just for money sake.

As I have explained above I have a strong
feeling that WE were very
much OVERCHARGED for lesser facilities.

We spent nearly 3.25 lacs( 2.15 lacs for medicine and blood and the
res(1.10)t for the stay and Dr. fees ) JUST for SIX days stay in our
hospital .

Somehow nature has allowed us to borrow so much money in that short
span.We all have to work hard for years to REPAY the debt. What about
the others who cannot afford.

For that matter take myself.I have same or similar trouble in my colon
and rectum. I know you are the right person to get treated from.

BUT YOU ARE UNAFFORDABLE to me. And not only to mein fact many a
people who wants better treatment for a reasonable rate with proper
facility cannot afford you .

HereI would like to bring to your attention one interesting thing.
Dr. Ashok kumar the cardiologist who visited my dad on the first day
evening explained about the complexity and the
high cost involved in
and PROMISED me that THEY will HELP us in some ways in reducing the
cost. After that he just visited few times for his OP and we were
charged Rs2500 for his services.I really dont know why it should be
so high and what has happened to the HELP he promised but forgot to
extend .

When My dad commented to the Amrita Hospital Surgeon that the VERY
much Popular CITY cardiologist charges Rs.1500 per visit I shunned
him and shouted at him that He was painting bad picture and
EXAGGERATING. ... NO ... He DIDNT...He was correct as HE USED TO
BE IN ALL HIS OTHER observations. The city heart specialists are
heartless specialists we used to joke.

So your rates are high and the rates do not match the facilities given.

I'm getting a rhetoric that indian hospitals charge less COMPARED to
the
west...This is TOTALLY ridiculous ...

1.NONE of the indian Docters spend the money western docters spend to
become such a one. Instead they suck the subsidy given by the
government s.
2.Indian citizens are not protected with insuarance as is the case with west .

The hospitals which RUN in INDIA for INDIANS with POOR INDIAN
STANDARDS cannot have a western pricing.

And not many an indian hospitals match the western standards in all
aspects. Certainly the hospital where my dad was treated under your
care DONOT match any western standard.
But your rates are too high . Even the DEADLY Vijaya Hospital charges
60% lesser than you for the ICU.
Further I know there is big trade commission involved in
medicines. When people like us who want to spend money to get treated
with the rare expensive medicines it is natural to expect to get
reduction in pricing from the huge profits made out of the sales .But
were charged during my dad's treatment to the last penny. Not a
single penny got reduced.

I know none of the points I raised is NEW to you as you could have
witnessed much much more than what I have seen as a professional and
further you are not just a first genration educated .

YOU CARRY the tourch for the third generation. So certainly you KNOW
about these all.

So where can people like me those who know a little bit about their
rights and want to get some quality treatment for each penny we
spend can go and get treated.

WHY WE SHOULD NOT COME TO YOU WHEN YOU HAVE THE TALENT and the efficient team to provide the treatment?

Finding a good docter is like witnessing death. At my dad's death we
found that you have some qualities of a good DR. So make yourself
affordable and give us the
facilitites rightful to us for the charges
we are expected to pay.I'm not asking to subsidise your cost.We are
willing to pay for the facilities and wish that you Make profit at a
reasonable rate. The case explained above certainly do not qualify
either with quality or reasonable prifit making is the opinion I have.

And Further please do the needful to get us our bill and rectify the
discrepancies in the billing and ask your people to return our hard
earned money whatever little it could be.
With Love
Narendran Somasundaram,
I think there is no one in Sripriya's family is "ok" as every one has opened their bodies to fit in the spare parts tried by Dr. Raj Kumar.
Them living itself is a big thing so Sripriya is jus amazed by that. But then, there is no need to go out of the way to support a doctor who is not responsible enough to make the family get updates of the patients status which is the most important thing that is needed.

Now the quacks can start mocking at me... but then I had my family member working in this hospital with all the praises until he discovered the bad practices and that person quit the job to join another hospital.

I then understood what is right and what is not. So, SERVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!1
this is the worst hospital i have seen till now. This is more costlier than the best hospitals in Bangalore. And this so called Dr. Rajkumar is there just to mint money. All he speaks is just lies.
I went there for simple abdomen pain. They have done so many tests, asked me to get admitted without waiting for test results and made almost 10k for a simple pain. 4 visits and over month now but no results.
Seeing what other have written I am feeling lucky that I resisted their attempts to admit me.

Friends Please beware of Life line hospital and this Doctor Rajkumar.
i am shocked that u believed on Indian doctors and not on UK doctors. who asked you to go to a lifeline hospital? you could have gone to apollo hospital, even there i don't think all doctors are good enough.
this is your fault. you should have kept some patience, when the doctors in UK told that surgery is not needed right now. that stupid rajkumar told that surgery can be done right tomorrow and you agreed. this shows how much mature you are. surgery is a major issue sir and you need to go to a best doctor and a best hospital to do the same if you love the person undergoing surgery.
i am really sad for your loss, and also angry on your stupid way of dealing important things. just make sure you take well care about such issues in the future.
and as far as Rajkumar is concerned i will recommend you to try for all hard steps that can be possible to bring your case to justice, and if you can't seriously talk to some mafia and get him killed brutally. such people don't deserve to live in this world.
Hello Mr.Durai,

I feel very sorry for you and your family for the plights you underwent and the unthinkable loss of life.

I know about the internal functioning of the Rigid hospital as I worked there for few months. Dr JSR talks to the patient and family only preoperatively to convince (?) them for the surgery and will give all sorts of false promises.

Post operatively he does not bother to visit his patients and monitor them. They are left to the mercy of his assistants whose competence god only knows. Many a times postoperative patients are not taken care of properly. Only junior duty doctors (MBBS) see them daily. For many patients daily treatment, instructions and notes are not written at all.

I am not surprised to hear from you that there were no notes on 16and 17 dec 2007. I am sure nobody has seen the patient properly and put down their findings otherwise the complication (duodenal perforation) could have been picked up earlier.

The duodenal perforation is most probably the result of perforation during the laproscopy port insertion (which is a known complication). They should have detected this at the earliest if they monitored her closely, so that your wife could have been saved.

Dr. JSR should not have operated upon her in the first instance, knowing that he is not going to be there for the next few days. This shows his ever so casual attitude towards patients life.

The worst part is that they should have accepted that the complication was due to first surgery and have done the second surgery without taking any fee rather than lieing balatantly that duodenal perforation is due to silent ulcer or stress ulcer.

What a kind of human being he is to take fee to operate again for a complication which occured because of his carelessness during the first sugery and complication being detected late becuase he and his team did not monitor the patient properly.

This is a pure and simple case of gross negligence.

All the case sheets of Rigid and Lifeline hospital should be audited to know what I am saying is correct (there is no proper notes, no daily treatment instructions by doctors, no monitoring sheet, no proper per-op aneasthetic chek up).

god only can save his patients
