[Resolved]  NHAI — Status of M.T.H. Road(NH 205), Chennai

I am a resident of Ambattur and would like to complain against the status of MTH Road(NH 205). The road is in a very bad shape, especially from Padi to Avadi. The traffic has increased so much, but the road still remains as it was 30 years earlier. The road has numerous potholes and craters, making motoring, a difficult proposition. It is a nightmare to drive during rain and during hours of darkness. Nobody cares for the road. There are talks going on for several years regarding widening of the road, but nothing has taken place. I want to make an official complaint regarding this, but am not sure whom to approach. Can somebody advice me?
Or make this known to the concerned department?

Please read Times of India today (16th June '10), it clearly reports that expansion of the CTH Road is put on Cold Storage. The worst fear has come true, neither the state govt. nor the central govt authorities are having any interest in the development of this road.

This is a real tragedy for the road users of NH 205
It is very true. This road is the worst of roads in Chennai, when compared to Poonammallee High Road, GST Road and GNT Road. All these roads are solid 100ft. NH-205 according to the govt records is a 100-ft road too and in reality, it is less than 40 ft in some stretches due to encroachments. Both Ambattur and Avadi municipalities are corrupt and the local MLA, Counsellors and policemen are all in this together. Innocent Individuals lives are lost everyday in accidents in this road. Unless Mr. Karunanidhi or future CM Mr. Stalin take this road in to their hands, things will not change. Hopefully, Mr. Karunanidhi and Mr. Stalin will fix this road.
Road widening
There were no takers of the project to widen the narrow 126 KM distance Thiruninravur to Tirupathi into a 200 feet 6 lane highway. It was a 1000 crore rupees project tendered by NHAI in March 2009. It is believed that 25000 passenger car units a day are needed to make the six lane project profitable as opposed to the 16000 to 17000 PCUs which traverse the highway currently.[2]

Road widening Project status (June 2010)
NHAI sources confirmed the awarding of Thiruninravur - Thiruttani - Tirupati (city) section, a 126km stretch of NH-205 to be Four Laned to Transstroy -OJSC Consortium(JV) Indian-Russian, but the 22km stretch from Padi to Thiruninravur is not going to be widened due to local municipalitiy authorities in Ambattur, Avadi and the District authorities of Tiruvallur are unwilling to clear away encroachments. Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankam which supports thousands of Encroachment shops on highway land sent hundreds of telegrams to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to stop the road widening project which would have benefited millions of residents in Padi, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Pattabiram, Thiruninravur and Tiruvallur.

The Indian Express and The Hindu sources cites that 2000 Enroachments shops managed to get priority over millions of residents suffering with everyday accidents and deaths with Government of Tamil Nadu and the road widening project in the 22km stretch is officially DEAD. NH-205 portion from Padi to Thiruninravur is only 20ft in some stretches due to encroachments and a max of 30ft motorable through the entire stretch. [3] Notable junctions like Canara Bank in Ambattur is only 20ft. [4] Accidents on this road have been on the rise since 2007 and fatalities are a common occurrence in this road. In 2009 alone, over 100 people have died in the stretch from Padi to Thiruninravur and 400 people injured. [5]

NHAI sources have confirmed that the stretch from Padi to Thiruninravur is to be maintained by Chennai Public Works Department and NHAI is not accountable for that section as they have not received the support of clearing encroachments or proper drainage systems from Ambattur and Avadi Muncipalities [6]. The Hindu sources cites that local authorities in Ambattur and Avadi are supportive of the thousands of encroachment shops and are not cooperative to NHAI for the road widening project for the 22km stretch from Padi - Thiruninravur which would benefit millions of residents along the Chennai Tiruvallur High Road corridor.

NHAI sources say that the Deatiled Project Report(DPR) to extend the 22km stretch has been unsupported by Local authorities in Tiruvallur District and they have only agreed to see if the road can be extended to a 32ft width road wherever possible as they are unwilling to clear away the encroachment shops along the 22km stretch. [7] NHAI sources have also confirmed that the 126 km stretch from Thiruninravur to Tirupati (city) has been entrusted to NHAI on May 2010, but the 22km km stretch from Padi - Thiruninravur which has been much awaited by the residents along the NH-205 corridor including Kilpauk, Villivakkam, Padi, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Pattabiram, Thiruninravur and Tiruvallur for the past 10 years is officially DEAD due to unsupportive local authorities unwilling to clear encroachment shops on highway land. The 126 km stretch is expected to be completed in 30 months by December 2012.[8]

Hello Sir This is Vasanth from Tiruvallur, ...pls give me ur mobile no to contact for nh-205 details sir my no is 9445727026
Hi All,

I'm residing at Ambattur. This is for your information.

National Highway 205 (NH 205) is a National Highway in India. NH 205 connects Chennai in Tamil Nadu with Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh. Starting from Poonamalle high road/NH 4 in Kilpauk Chennai it joins Anantpur at NH 7.

It was planned to expand into a 200 feet 6 lane highway. It was a 1000 crore rupees project tendered by NHAI in March 2009.

But, still the MTH road expansion is not taken place to 200 Ft. This is because of the Traders who protest. In one of the article, I read that, if the road has to be expanded to 200 Ft, then 3, 500 Building Structures has to be Demolished.

Government has paid to some building owners to vacate the place. But still the Expansion is not happening.

WE NEED 200 FT ROAD BETWEEN PADI TO THIRUNINDRAVUR.

Regards,
Public Welfare
The Villivakkam constituency, MLA, as a election candiate promoised to Widen the MTH Road, but it is only an election promoise- T.Gunaseelan
It is my view that the road widening project on MTH road has become extremely crucial. Further delay by the authorities will only see revolution from the restless public and road users. The patience of the people should not be put to test. The politicians and government officials should leave their personal agenda aside and focus on very crucial projects such as expansion of MTH Road. If you see Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune, the infrastructural development is mind-boggling. In the chennai, looking at delay and road conditions, we are only going backward.
The widening of the road seems to be put off due to our corrupt politicians, police officials and state government employees. This is very much evident from the number of new buildings which have started coming up in Ambattur area, along the road. They have taken their share of bribes and put the general public, who are using the road, to face all the hardships. Pity on the people who voted them to power. This road, together with the encroachments and the big lorries plying through out the day has become a nightmare for the residents. Better, if somebody files a PIL. Or else the people have to come together to do some sort of road roko or bandh protesting against the delay in widening the road.
PIL is not going to solve the problem. What's hapening in Ranganathan Street. How many times has the Court given directions to the civic authorities? The only way out for us is to, ignore these politicians when they come to vote next time and we should all find a way to excercise the option of 49-o. I hope the Election Commission gives 49-o as an option in the ballot itself instead of going to the voting officer.

I agree, near CanaraBank and Ambattur OT, it is only 20 ft. I dont know why Mr.MK is not willing to clear the encrochements first. If these are cleared and drainage provided for rain water, then the road will be alteast 4 lanes. Atleast each side one lane can be dedicated to MTC/School/Office buses and other lane can be occupied by motorists.

God Save India from these corrupt politicians in Ambattur.
I AM SANTHAKUMAR DOING BUSINESS IN VADAPALANI
I DESIDE TO IMPROVE MY BUSINESS. I WISH TO GOING FOR
REMODIFYING MY BUILDING, SO I WANT TO KNOW ANY ROAD
WIDENING IS IN THAT ARCOT RAOD ? {NEAR VADAPALANI AARCH)
Agreed that we can ignore the politicians when they come to us for seeking our votes. But then, they are dependent on the BPL people for their votes, as those people are ready to see their valuable votes for a meagre sum of Rs 100/-, a packet of biriyani, a saree/dhoti or a quarter bottle of liquor. Till those people stop doing that, nothing can change the fate of the politicians. Till we get a better road, we can't expect any sort of development in this part. Moreover, Ambattur is going to be a part of Chennai Corporation from next year. Will the fate of the road change, at least, after that?
iam a resident of vaishnavi nagar, avadi &i agree with all the problems, hope we have some solution after the assembly election.
I am a resident of Tiruninravur. Driving a vehicle from Ambattur to tiruninravur is a real panic thing. Many places the roads have been cleared and the work seems to be started yet. There is no sign of removing encroachers.
Actually the thing we need to notice is that when the Authourities demolishes the encroached buildings / shops the debris is not removed from that area. The people who comes to buy thing from the shops parks their vehicles after the debris. If there are flower vendors or fruit vendors, the vehicles are parked after that. then where is the place for driving.
NHAI has to take immediate actions to solve these kind of issues.
What a shame, the widening has been shelved for ever thanks to the traders and local politicians. This has been unofficially confirmed with the namesake expansion of few feet currently happening without disturbing the enroachers. I bet Ambattur/Avadi are the only localities which are progressing backwards with any kind of infrastructure and not a single politician of ruling or oppostion, local councillors, MLA or MP have raised a single voice on developing this MTH road!!!. The local Ambattur municipality headed by an IAS officer has washed off its responsibilty of removing enroachers saying 'it is the responsibility of the NH"

Elections will be announced soon and the authorities will not disturb their vote bank and make the residents lives even miserable.

This same politician goons will be re-elected by the illiterate folks of Ambattur/Avadi and enusre that this locality will resemble any underdeveloped impoverished locality.Days are not far away when the MTH road will resemble a dirty and narrow road as in a Bihar or UP or an African Somalia !!!

To add insult to injury is the article in Deccan Chroncile which confirms the city expansion has been put off due to the discomfort of the local politicians

Anyway folks be careful while you drive through this road afterall we need to take care of ourselves and our families and if anyone is sick or need urgent medical attention only God can save!!!

Please widen the MTH road... Its Just 6 kms from ambattur to padi bridge, but it takes more than actual time to reach padi from ambattur, its because of heavy traffic the only solution to over this is.. It is necessary to lay 200ft road.. It will very helpful for future

NATIONAL HIGHWAY 49 — A NATIONAL HIGHWAY WITH ONE WAY FACILITY

NH 49 PASSES THRU MUVATTUPUZHA TOWN VIA NEW BAZZAR, THIS ROAD IS TO MUNNAR (TOURIST PLACE WHERE A LOT OF TOURIST FROM INDIA AND ABROAD TRAVEL EVERYDAY) MADHURAI. BUT AT THE PASSING POINT OF MUVATTUPUZHA ONE WAY TRAFFICE IS ARRANGED AND THAT ROAD IS GOOD . BUT ANOTHER SIDE OF ONEWAY ROAD VIA MARKET OR EEC ROAD(MAY THE ROAD OF AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT) CREATE A LOT OF PROBLEMS TO TRAVELLERS . AS I AM A CITIZEN OF INDIA AND PAYING ROAD TAX , I SHOULD HAVE GOOD ROAD FACILTIY .

SO NH AUTORITY SHOULD OPEN THE EXISTING ROAD FOR TWO WAY TRAFFIC OR MAINTAIN EITHER OF THE ONE WAY ROAD DESCRIBED EARLIER FOR SMOOTH RUNNING OF VECHILES
