[Resolved] Chingu — Deceiving Ignorant Tourists | |
My husband and I went to Manali for our honeymoon. Out of curiosity we bought something called "Chingu". The Chingu is a quilt kinda thing. It wasn’t for sale. It was for lease. The cost was 7K; after a period of 21 months, a person from their side will supposedly come and collect the chingu from you after paying you 9K...! And why so? Because Meneka Gandhi has banned the furnaces that were earlier used to heat the chingu stuff to make out shawls from it… 1 chingu once heated expands to make 5-6 shawls each of which sells for around 20-30K. Now human body is the best furnace in the world as claimed by them! Moreover in order to lure the customers they are offering a lot of free products as gift such as bed sheets, angora shawl, carpet, dress materials etc. After 21 months you return the chingu but can keep the gifts all for yourself! We paid them 2K (1K as advance + 1K for membership). We were told that the products will come to us in Chennai by VPP. After returning to Chennai we've had certain suspicions about the authenticity of this entire thing. Except for the present contact no. of the dealer in Manali & a receipt provided by him, we dont have any other document of authenticity. We searched online for any previous customers or their experience but found none. We would like you to help us by sharing with us any information that you have on this matter. The VPP is on its way and on receiving it we are expected to pay another 5K. Incase we've made a blunder in buying this product we would atleast console ourselves with the fact that we've lost 2K but are saved from paying the remaining 5K. Also we would be able to save other ignorant tourists from making such a costly mistake. Was this information helpful? | |

we have also received chingu without any hassel. i dont think this is anything to deceive you.
We have received all the products as promised by the shopkeeper. The products are in good conidtion and seems to be value for money. Let us see what happen after 21 months. Any one who has completed 21 months can please share his views.
We have purchased the product on cash basis and got the Chingu Quilt alongwith some free gifts
1. Carpet
2. Quilts- 2 in No.
3. Shawls- 2 in No.
4. Bed Sheets- 2 in No.
However, I am really not very convinced with the scheme which they say that the Rs.12, 600 would be refunded after 21 months with some thanksgiving gift. Still I have bought as I felt that the value of the products would atleast be the amount I have spent if not more.

we have it, we paid cash however i do not believe that this stuff works that great and i certainly do not think that they will take the product back. I havent heard of anything like that ever. Can some one tell me what kinda animal is that
Yes, we have received the product on cash basis. In first shop Near Manu Maharshi Temple.
We bought 6 items with the Chingu Carpet.

The materials are good and worth to buy.

we have also bought chingu 4-5 dayz back and we are suppose to recieve the parcel today...
and iam sure of the products coming my way but..the story of taking back the chingu after21 months seems to be false :0)

Even I bought chingu today worth 32500/- near kalyani helipad in Shimla . With three chingus with promise to get more than lakh rs. after 5 yrs.
I have choosen 3 gifts and 3 chingus and on top of it bargained to give me one dress set to my wife after the deal. Paid by credit card.
Now after reading http://www.himvani.com/news/2008/10/31/did-you-see-chingu-in-himachal/1840/, I think I have not paid worth 32500/-/ Chingu story may be fake, but as per their marketing skill they might have sold the stuff but for me it is too expensive.
I can ask my credit card company to deny the payment as these may not be worth of 32500/- .Good atleast I have these with me to carry alongiwth me as I have not opted to send them through post.

u r right...we also paid in advance 1600rs..pepl in himachal r just behind money they jst knw hw to deceive tourist...actly our driver took us to that shop..i think he mst b gettin commision out of it...bt i really feel yhay b4 buyin nethin frm himacahl one hd think 100times...

The shopkeeper also told us that an agreement of material return would reach us within 40 days...I therefore do not believe that any such ageeement would reach us. If it reaches ... I will consider this as scheme. Till then it's buy for 7K for me.

i have bought this chingu quilt at himachal handloom shop near hidimba temple manali on 29 dec 08, i was quite ok till in another shop on the mall rd at manali, i found that the chingu quilt i bought in the previous shop was being given as a free gift along with a chingu quilt, that resembled the free gift offered to me at the previous shop ...this was absolutely ridiculous. as has been alredy commented i have only the receipt and the card as transaction evidence. the five year refund story seems untrue to me
we brought chingu from shimla, we are not sure about the authenticity of their proposal. if anybody had completed 21 months got the assured amount of money afteer returning the chingu please reply

Chingu story is totally false. Don't buy this item, because Chingu is a totally fake thing.
By reading all the complaints above, it seems that there are a number of shopkeepers (Chingu Sellers or as "lessers") at Manali / Shimla who have sold / leased chingu stuff to a large number of people . If this is totally fake, can there be so many shopkeepers resorting to this practice without fear of being caught?
If they have really deceived us, can we unite and file a formal complaint with some consumer forum?

I disagree on the point that chingu is not delivered, bcoz I recently visit Patnitop and purchased chingu from there of Rs 7k, by paying 600/- in advance. I booked it on 4th Jan 09 and on 14 Jan 09, Post man visits my home with the delivery.
But authenticity of chingu, I can not say any thing. Based on other blogs in net, people are not happy. Also at the time of sailing chingu, the salesman shows the connection with Laddakh, that seems to be fake.

we have Bought 4 chingu wroth Rs 4200 each with best quality on cash basis scheme with 7 attractive gift worth around Rs 15000. and refund would be provided 21 month with 75% of the amont paid with Two attractive thanks giving gifts .
There will be no such buy back, as I have been using this 'Chingu' for the past 30+ months. Purchased in June'2006 for Rs.6600/-. Same story, same concept, 6products, to be sent thro' VPP. Packing style is excellent. Unfortunately, the scheme doesn't exist, otherwise I would have been contacted by now for the buy back. Just to add there has been no change in my residential address either.
so surely U'll also recieve the product. pl check the address given to them.
