Reliance Broadband Wireline Connection — Ex-orbitant billing & Hacing o[censored]ser accounts

Sir,

I am broadband wireline customer of Reliance communications for the last on year.
During the past 10 out of 12 months my monthly bills rarely exceeded Rs.880.
However during Jan 2010 I was sent a bill of Rs.7957.00 I had approached the company for details of my usage regarding the time and amount of data traffic which the company was not able to provide. My main use of internet is for using the email. My kids use the internet for completing their homework assignments.

During February I noticed that on some occasions when I tried to login, I was not directed to the log in page but directly connected without login. When I had gone to the homepage I noticed a different user id other than mine and before I could note it down the screen had closed. On some occasions in February 2010 , when I tried to login I was not allowed to log in, and an error message displayed stating that user has already logged in and that access was denied. I had sent a complaint to the customer care but I did not get any reply. Last week when I tried to log in I got a message stating that my account has been temporarily suspended. On further enquiry I learnt that my account had run up a bill of Rs 14500.00 for February 2010 alone. I am confident that my account has been hacked into and used illegally by another Reliance user and Reliance communications has no way of finding out the culpable party. While I had paid tha Jan'2010 bill in good faith that such a thing would not recur, the February bill proved my undoing.

I connect to Reliance broadband connection only through my Desktop at home.
Hence it would be possible to identify the other user who had been illegally using my account and running up such a monstrous usage bill. The Network Interface Card (NIC) has unique physical address even though the IP addresses are shared within an ISP, Reliance communications should be able to provide the details of the user who has been using my account illegally but Reliance customer support team has been parroting that their account ids and pwds cannot be hacked. Unless Reliance tells what mechanism/product it uses to protect user ids and pwds it would be difficult to have faith on the usage billing. While I have asked Reliance communication to terminate their connection, I am at a loss about what to do about the bill amount since Reliance communications data on usage is very sketchy. I do not want such incidents be repeated for other consumers. Our government has given licenses to Reliance communications in the faith that they will be able to protect customer privacy, but Reliance communication has failed to do so.

Regards

I.Gunalan
