Seagate — Failed Hard Disc

Dear Sir:

About one and half year back we purchased a 160 GB Internal Seagate Hard Disc. About 2 months back, suddenly, Molex Adopter Power Cable connecting to the HDD burned out and the Computer Stopped. We replaced the damaged cable and the Computer restarted with the Hard Disc working fine. However, a few days back the drive failed. It is getting powered but is not reading. We took the drive to the Chennai Service Centre, who rejected the same saying that there were burnt out marks on the connector and asked us to write to the Seagate Support. We wrote to them and they asked us to send them the HDD / Cable Pictures, which we did. They replied that the Warranty was void, didn’t answer any of the following points raised by us, and didn’t give us any clear cut reason why the warranty was void:

1. The PCB Side Connector is working and the drive is getting powered but it is not reading;

2. If the Molex Adopter Cord burned out, it may be because of some manufacturing defect in the PCB Side Connector or the drive etc.

3. How is it the User's fault that the Connector burned (every thing else is working fine in the Computer)? In fact the designing defect if any, in the drive causing the burn out is exposing the user to various risks.

4. For an instance, if we assume the burn out is because of the Molex Adopter Cable, why Seagate is not supplying certified Connecting Cables? If they would have, we would have used the same.

5. The Power Supply is absolutely fine because every thing else is working fine.

6. Is Seagate trying to evade warranty protection under the cover of a designing defect that is theirs?

7. If a product burn out happens, how can they blame it on the user and say the warranty is void? There have been any number of other burnouts, like laptops, cell phones etc., they never said it is because of the user.

8. It is the moral and legal duty of the Manufacture to ensure that the product is designed in such a way that any such burn out never happens. And if it happens, they investigate the same and find proper solutions to the same. Rather than answering my original query about the burnout, they have simply said, "Warranty is void".

9. It is unexpected of a world renowned manufacturer to treat the user in such a way. Rather than investigating the issue and solving the issue, they are simply passing the blame to the user.

10. What is it that we could have done to prevent this kind of cable burn out and how are we responsible for it?

11. Furthermore, we had a harrowing experience visiting their Chennai Service Centre. First of all their Toll Free Helpline gave very sketchy address with old door no., and with much difficulty we located the place tucked away in a by lane with no indication on the Main Road. Inside view was depressing and disappointing. About 20-30 persons were sitting and about 20 persons were standing. I had to wait for over an hour for my turn, to show the drive which was forthwith rejected without any tests. All the windows of room were closed and there was no air conditioning (there was a single oscillating pedestal fan). There was no drinking water. It is terribly sad and disappointing that a World renowned manufacturer like Seagate is treating its customers in such a poor and disappointing way.
