cooperative society — Payment of society outstanding dues

I am a defaulter for Maintenance Charges of our society for a long time. In between i had made some adhoc payments against my outstanding dues but the society debited the said amount against my Interest Payments and kept my principal dues outstanding. I informed them that they should debit the same against my principal outstanding dues and not in interest as the society is a non profit organisation.

Please guide me if i am right or society is right. If i am right please guide me how to tackle the same.
