Dear Mumbai Mirror team, I would like to complain via this news paper of a major garbage collection problem on Phirozshah Mehta Road in Vile Parle (E). The common corridor on P.M Road connecting 4 building; Maheshwar, Mandrekar, Kanak and Neel Gagan societies face a serious menace of garbage disposal. Attached are some latest pictures which show a huge dump of dried leaves and tree cuttings lying in this area in the last 10 days. There are also used/ dried coconut shells (100 to 150) thrown regularly in this area. Over the last 2 years regular written and verbal complaints have been made at the local Nagarsevak Mrs. Jyoti Parag Alavani’s office however, the BMC has still not cleared this garbage. A huge dump of household garbage is also left here on this common passage connecting the entrances to 4 residential buildings with new garbage being added every day. The garbage then overflows all over the corridor making it difficult to people to walk and vehicles to enter/ leave. Adding to the woes are the rag pickers, dogs and rats who scavenge in the garbage which have now caused mosquitoes to hover around the area. Even standing on the corner of this road is not possible as there is a unbearable stench. We have young children and senior citizens residing in these buildings. During the last monsoons, we have had to face a severe mosquito menace due to this problem. Residents lack common sense that disposing garbage in these areas will sooner or later this issue cause problems like malaria & dengue and will create issues for them personally. The common excuse is that there isn’t any common dustbin in the area which results in garbage collectors dumping all the garbage in this corridor. Regular complaints have been made to the corporator’s office and on BMC’s website over the last 1 year and as soon as the garbage is cleared, new garbage is dumped in a few days. We have also asked for a clean up marshal to monitor the area and impose a fine to the erring society but this also has not been done. If the BJP/ Congress/ Shiv Sena candidates from this area had spent a few hundreds in getting their constituency cleaned instead of spending thousands on the election campaign, I'm sure they would have garnered more votes. Is BMC going to take any responsibility for this and provide us with a permanent solution to this problem? How does the BMC expect us to live in this dump? Please help! A resident
