In fact, Indian secularism can be redefined as being pro-Muslim, and I will make my point with many examples.

Example 1. Media goes berserk when Human rights of Muslims are violated but when the human rights of people from other communities are violated, and especially when the violators are Muslims, the Media goes mum.
On 2nd June 2014, a Pune techie named Mohsin Shaikh was killed allegedly by Hindu right wing group Hindu Rashtra Sena. The Indian media went berserk and this case became the fodder for prime time debates and also became the prime focus of the Indian MSM. The Hindu right wingers were condemned and the Bharatiya Janata Party, a nationalist party were held responsible for such blatant aggression. Murder based on religion should be condemned and should never be allowed to propagate in a secular republic. However, the same should be practiced against everybody. But, this is not the case with India, at least not with the Indian main stream media. Gauhar Khan, an Indian model and actress was slapped during a reality show by a Muslim youth. The reason stated by the Muslim youth for this blatant aggression was that she provoked him by wearing short dresses and being a Muslim, Gauhar should not wear short dresses. Expectedly, the Indian main stream media dismissed this incidence as just another incidence and did not pursue the story with the same zeal as they had pursued the Muslim techie one.

To make my point stronger I would give two similar examples. A Hindu-Muslim couple was killed recently in Babugarh, Uttar Pradesh. The couple was killed by the woman’s family and community members. The woman Danista(21) belonged to the Muslim community and the man Sonu Singh (22) belonged to the Hindu community. Once again this murder did not hog the limelight. But, had it been the other way round, that is, had the community of the murderers not been Muslim, the news would have spread like wildfire. In another case, from Kerala, a Hindu Muslim couple are being issued death threats from the Muslim community. In this case, the girl who is a Muslim and the boy who is reportedly an atheist have received death threats not only from the local Muslims but also from people in the Gulf countries. The local administration has provided them security but the threats continue. And once again, there are no discussion or reports on this story.

The Indian MSM very conveniently looks the other way whenever the aggressors are Muslims.

Example 2. NGO’s (Non Government Organizations) in India are afraid of Muslims and as a result only attack and criticize other communities.
In September this year, PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) activists who were campaigning for vegetarianism ahead of Bakrid were manhandled and beaten by local Muslims in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The activists who were women were badly beaten and manhandled. But, like always the Indian mainstream media remained mum on the issue. No NGO’s came out to support the PETA activists and the PETA activists themselves chose not to aggravate the situation and claim for justice. PETA simply forgot the incidence and chose to move on.

Contrast that to the recently held Gadhimai festival, which is celebrated every 5 years in Nepal. It was reported that thousands of animal killings took place as a religious practice. Water buffaloes, goats and roosters were killed or sacrificed as a part of religious practice. It was termed as the world’s biggest ritual slaughter. But, is it so? Definitely not. The worlds biggest ritual slaughter occurs every year during Bakrid. But, it would be interesting to see if any NGO or MSM dares to say that, especially after what happened in Bhopal this year.
Secularism in India has been reduced to just Muslim appeasement. And this story of Indian Secularism or Muslim appeasement can go on and on. The Indian government has always gone the extra mile to appease Muslim minorities by making special laws for them, by providing them special exemption on various issues and by treating them as someone special.
This Muslim appeasement is at times done to get political mileage, sometimes its done to improve the national image towards minorities and on many other occasions Muslim appeasement is done with the veil of betterment of a downtrodden community. But, unfortunately the fact is that all these measures have only enhanced the regressive attitude of the community.
But, this is a dangerous practice because if we consider Muslims and non Muslims as children of India, then the Indian administration is only making one more adamant by accepting every logical and illogical demand of one community and at the same time it is also putting the seeds of envy and jealousy in the minds of other community, making the whole environment vicious, dangerous and explosive. This is like a ticking time bomb, and the need of the hour is to diffuse this bomb as quickly as possible.
