[Resolved]  Bombay Hospital — Surcharge

Hi,

The hospital has levied 20% surcharge on Hospital Bills . Are they eligible to charge 20% ?

Yes I do agree, why Bombay Hospital is charging such a high surcharge - 20%!!! (I am not sure about the surcharges prevailing in other hospitals).

I am writing this because I myself experienced this recently. My mom was admitted in the hospital recently and the hospital charged 20% surcharge on the entire bill amount. Over and above, this surcharge was not eligible for reimbursement / cashless from the insurance company as this was classified as "Non Medical" expense.

Is this justifiable? Even after the hospital charging for all the services rendered, i.e. Doctor charges, nurse charges, Room charges, operation theater charges, etc.

I am unable to find much information on surcharge on the internet. I will appreciate if someone can throw more light on this issue.

THE SURCHARGE IS TO HIGH WHICH THE INSURANCE CO IS NOT PAYING
I HAD PAID SURCHARGE OF RS 25000/- WHICH I DID NOT RECIEVE UNDER MEDICLAIM.
I THINK ALL SHOULD KNOW THSI FACT WHILE OPTING FOR BOMBAY HOSPITAL AND THE HOSPITAL SHOULD ALSO INFORM BEFORE ADDMISSION

Hi, same thing happened to me at Bombay hospital. I went for my 6 months old son's brain tumor surgery at Bombay hospital for which they have charged me rupee 35000 as surchage on the total bill which was not reimbursed by insurance company. Last week I went for angiography for my son at Lilavati hospital and they didn't charged me any surcharge. which looked strange to me. Since then I am looking for more information. you can contact me at [protected]@gmail.com. we can club more people with same problem and move to court against Bombay hospital. Because this is the money which hospitals are not giving to government either and considered as black money

My father Nandkishore Jaiswal was admitted in Bombay hospital one month ago.

Hospital chare Surcharge of amt 3500 which is not cover in mediclaim..

They are not giving any of the details for this charge.. Please take an action for this.

Bombay Hospital is just for cheating patients in terms of surcharge and also charging higher on life saving drugs. The biological injection which is available at 60, 000 in any other hospital is being charged 80, 000 in Bombay Hospital.

We've had a similar experience and have sued the hospital.

Hi, my name is Ahmed Khan and I am still being admitted in bombay hospital and I have also experienced the same thing that is pertaining to 20 percent surcharge in the interim bill that I have received. Even I also have a mediclaim policy and I may have to pay surcharge from my own pocket. My cont number[protected]. Please make an enquiry as to why they charge such a heavy surcharge. No other hospitals charge surcharge in the bill. Does the surcharge amount goes to the government in the form of tax. I think they are following an illegal way to make money in the form of surcharge.

My Mother Nirmala Jain was admitted in Bombay hospital last week.

Bombay Hospital have chareged Surcharge @20% which sumed to rs 30, 000 which was not cover in mediclaim policy.

I had got my daughter treated for a small cut and the surcharge that I paid was Rs. 25000+ some Rs.8300 of non medical items and balance amnt of Mediclaim 5%, despite a hefty five star fees for paltry facilities. Really felt cheated by Bombay Hospital. My ID is [protected]@gmail.com.

By reading all the above comments I am regretting on why did I opted to go to Bombay Hospital for my mother in an emergency case. She complained about the pain in the chest just yesterday and we rushed her to Bombay Hospital thinking that we will just go to emergency and take some medication and all will become fine. They ECG was fine but still they took us to the ICU stating to keep her in observation for one day which was understood seeing her health which was not that normal.

She got admitted just yesterday at 5.30pm and was discharged today morning around 10.30 am. We were surprised to see a final bill of Rs. 35, 530/- for one night (not yet completed 24hrs in the hospital) in which 5500/- was charged as 'Surcharge'. But thinking we have no option then to pay and get discahrge from hospital, I paid the all the amount and took discahrge. I also had a second thought that it might be some kind of tax that govt must have imposed, they hospital cannot cheat on all such things. I underestimated and to my suprise when I reached home and googled it, I was completely shocked to read all the reviews and the same suitaition ppl have gone through.
