People are talking more about North Indian being harassed at mumbai. But has anyone ever talked about harassment of non Kannadigas at Bangalore ? Ask the people who are living there. I am going to present the series of few short stories here and inviting discussion / comments. Last post was regarding Driving license issue problem. This is in reference to Auto drivers Bangalore auto driver is world famous for their cunningness (sorry but I thought it is the best word to describe them.) once you talk to them in Non-Kannada, they will never ready to go at meter fare. always twice or more than twice to meter rate. Here is a small incidence One of my known person were going to Chennai on Thursday, was with his wife and 1 year. It was 9.15 pm. They wanted to have an auto from Koramangala, Sarjapur road, Bangalore. They have asked 3 people all said Rs 250/- (whopping 3 times than meter fare). At last we got an auto who agreed to take us to railway station for 1.5 times fare. They reached station at 10.15 pm and found electronic meter showing Rs 90 /-. The guy taken out two notes of Rs 100 each. Auto person suddenly started asking for Rs 200 /- more than double fare. He denied and auto person started quarreling. He asked for meter card or / and police. Auto driver started threatening and called other auto drivers to join. Seeing many auto driver gathering, He asked his wife to go little far from the place as daughter was just 1 year old. His wife stood 50 meter away from the place. After 5 minutes of quarrel, auto driver snatched both notes and ran away with auto. They were not able to do anything except noting number of auto i.e. KA 02 AA ****. At chalukya junction
I hired an auto to go to Koramangala from malleswaram. At the chalukya hotel junction instead of taking right turn he took left turn I asked him why? He said some reason and I was busy talking over mobile and thought it might be few more bugs extra and did not mind really. Later after 100 feet he stopped auto and said that the clutch wire is broke. Then I thought I should pay him what ever is the meter bill (meter bill was 24.50) then I gave him 20 rupees note and 10 rupees note he said the 20 rupees note is tarred so I gave him 100 rupees note he again said that the note is tarred so I gave him another 100 rupees note he said that all my 100 rupees notes are duplicate. So I gave him 1000 rupees note and asked for change then he did some MAGIC and said that I gave him 10 rupees only and he showed me then I said ok take auto to police station I will give you the remaining amount. Then he gave back 1000 rupees to me and disappeared from the place within no time. I could not notice the auto number but I can identify him. He is around 40+ years of age. He know kanaka well.

Most people have had bad experience. Just pray that the metro begins fast and the dependence on auto decreases which in turn increases the competition and they fall in line.
I agree that they harass people who do not know Kannada. But can you imagine what will happen if you take an auto in Delhi and Chennai and don't speak Hindi or Tamil resply.? Its the same everywhere. The trick is to learn Kannada and mingle in. Is it too much to ask?

Today I was at the receiving end of these autowallas.
I took an Auto from Kemp fot to JP nagar the meter was digital and the fare 105. This is fine.
While returing on the same way the auto had an analog meter and it showed a fare of 180 !!
I got down from auto and wanted to take the number but the number was written in Kanadaa…the auto waala gave the number himslef - KA 51 4006. I am not sure if this one is correct.
It has been 3 years for me in Bangalore and these are the few things I have learnt.
- Old auto drivers are better than young auto drivers.
- Never take an auto from Auto stand !! - these are generally the guys who just wait and either ask for extra money or their meter is flawed.
-If you are a girl in Banaglore than dont take auto !!
- If you are a boy and not strong built dont take auto.
- Dont take auto where no registration number is written and the plate number is in Kanadda only.
- Dont argue …it wont do anything ..however while getting off from the auto is there is a policeman around than certaily complaint.
- Watch a few Kanadaa movie…avoid autowaala who look like the villains from these movies !! ( Dont want to stereotype ..but might be of help for girls ! )
- Dont make it ugly while paying…you might regret paying but you will regret more if you get into a fight and still end up paying.
And last but not the least….if you are a group of guys and the auto waal is bad then stop some somewhere faraway from your place and beat the up !!

I have had a similar experience today. I took an auto from Karmalaram Railway Station (newly added stop approximately 8-10 kms from Marathahalli). After a bit of haggling he came down to Rs.150/- ( from 250/-) for Marathahalli.
On reaching my housing complex, he refused to go inside and insisted that I get down at the main gate (at that time his meter was reading about 80/- (I doubt it was running fast). I called 100 and was given a number 22943381. This guy was least bothered and later I could understand why.
No one picked up this number. I have been noticing that the auto drivers are becoming increasingly arrogant. A few years back this was not the case. They used to be afraid of police complaint. Now they do not bother.
Be it Mumbai or Bangalore, no city grows economically at such a phenomenal pace unless there are a lot of immigrants from other places. The administration would do well if it understands that to make this city truly international, these immigrants, expatriates or domestic, need to be given a sense of security and belonging.
All said, the local people in Bangalore are very gently and friendly. I am not even sure if the people in question are really locals.

Hi, I have paid Rs.92/- from B.T.M to Residency Road Cash Pharmacy. Usually it comes to 50-60. But, today(12/04/2010) even If I am asking him that your meter has some problem, he is very aggressive and not in turn started blaming me for that. the auto number : KA02 A3855. There is no Identity card inside auto..

Kindly check the meter of auto number KA-03 A-4109. Its faulty and runs even when the auto is not on.
Not all auto drivers are bad... But because of few people, the whole driver community is getting afftected.

I have to complain about one auto driver whose miss behavior for asking about false meter. the same place i went by one auto the meter came 31.5 but when i return back by same root the meter came 42.50. when i asked about him then he started shouting in kannad .the police no is 55281/06 and his dl no is 66960/05-06
Pune Autowala — Auto wala never go by meter
I work at GIGA Space Viman Nagar. Daily i used to take Auto from WadgaoSheri to Viman nagar.Autowala there in Wadgao sheri never ready to go by
meter.They always ask for fixed amount of 40-60 Rs to pay which is just double of meter reading.
Please do the needful in this case.

When we tried to ask him the reason, he shouted abusive language to my wife. When I asked him to stop and gave him Rs 20 (we would have hardly covered 1 km), this started using abusive language against me.
He tried to throw stones at me.
Fearing that other Kannadiga brothers of this autowalas would gather, I gave up and didn't get into any argument. The people around us were mute spectators. In these tensed moments, I forgot to note down his auto number. Even if I had taken down and complained, I don't know what results would it have brought!!! Because I keep hearing that even the police doesn't listen to non-Kannadigas.
What they forget, is that with their this kind of behaviour, the Kannadiga's are creating hatred for themselves and they will get the taste of their same medicine once they go out of Karnataka.

I would like to narrate my incident, there is one driver name Shiva in TC Palya near K R puram, he is not a auto driver he is Rowdy, he picks passengers and as soon as u sit in his auto and when he reaches the destination he demands like a hungry pig and if you dont pay him he gets physical also.
He has thrashed many of my friends, he is a close associate of the area coporator.
He is bulky, dark, tall, Missed his auto number will update soon.

Now travelling in Bangalore without your own transport has become a nightmare because of the bullying one faces by auto-drivers. The little power they have in the world i.e. to take people from one place to another, is simply pushed to a level of exploitation. Their gang mentality leaves no room for passengers to voice themselves accordingly. What do you do when you are in the middle of no where and all the autos ask you for 200 when the real amount would be less than 60!?? I face this on a daily basis esp because I live in Indiranagar. They NEVER use their meter and simply state a horrendous amount and you either take it or leave. These are so lazy, they would rather eat nothing provided they have the chance to bully...frustrated with their lives with no desire to change it for the better.
Waiting for the day when these autos go completely out of business. I can't stand them. I avoid even going out these days if I have to take an auto. Hate those guys!

I would like to share my incident, i took auto form Old Madras Road to Indira Nagar(KA 05 AE 5786, BADGE NO: 17345) meter was unappropriate, it is hardly 2 KM which is just Rs. 25 as per new meter rates, but he charged me Rs.60 and distance displayed in his meter was 5.5 KM. When i told him i will complaint about you he said "GO AHEAD".
I am looking forward that Goverment should take strict action aginst these auto drivers.

Hello This is Mehul...!!! Studyin in 2nd p.u...!!! Today (September 3rd 2010) when i was coming from coll, i got down near mysore bank to take courier... I took my courier, and was waiting for auto...!!! Many autos came and passed by asking Rs.30 to Rs.40 to Akkipet (not even 800 meters away from there), when i asked for meter charge they refused and went without bothering...!!! The very next moment another auto arrived...!!!

An auto driver took 500 from me and fled away when i was just taking my luggage, it was raining heavily. This incident happened in Bangalore jp nagar. i took the auto from the satellite bus stand Mysore road..

This happen on the 17th of Sep.2010 while coming back from vijayanagar to Rajajinagar First Block. It usually takes rs.35. only 5 KM, daily route, meter start from 14 rs., but the digital meter in this auto was very fast and we had to pay rs.56. and 8KM. 3 km extra, I am surprise, How its possible.The name of the auto driver was VISHWA, DL.No. 26180/06, badge no. 6287/06 and no. Polic SL no.95132/07. We want action to be taken immediately and we want to be informed about the action taken because this is not the first time we have encountered such an incident.

Hi,I took an auto on 04.10.2010 from Marathalli to Sarjapur Signal at 9:00 PM to go my home. I was with my wife.When i took the auto, the auto driver agreed that he will charge as per the meter but once we reached at Sarjapur Signal he start asking to pay extra Rs. 20. When i refused to pay him he start abusing me and when i told him that I'l complian it to police, he said i don't care you do whatever you want to do.
I really felt very bad and i want someone has to do something about it.

If I am walking with a girl around koramangala this auto driver will start teassing girl which is very cheap. About the auto fare in bangalore its all different by looks for NorthIndian different n for Northeast India different auto fare are more then the cost of travelling on BMW but to be honest some of the auto driver are truthfull with their jobs say out of 100% 98% of auto driver are truthfull with autofare. honesty with the autofare is never there in bangalore their are inhuman... To be true if they take the right amount of fare I'b more then happy to pay 10buxs extra. Their are situation were they wont even give back your money suppose if the auto fare is 60 and u give 100 they wont return back 40 this is how the situation is. Last but not the list who is gonna take care of it or ist bangalore going to be the same as now.

I daily travel by auto from majestic to marthahalli, but the auto drivers simply ask Rs.300/- to 400/- they will never put the meter & that to old meters are running very fast. I dont know whom to complaint & how to solve this problem.

I am a Bangalorean and I hate to say this but its true, Bangalore Auto drivers are mean, greedy, notorious. There have been enough complaints about these Auto Drivers, but its very unfortunate that no action is taken to curb this corruption. Its a known fact that almost 70 - 80 % of the meters show fake rates, but why is it that no governing body is taking any action on this !!!
First of all they cheat big time and upon this they abuse the customers. It is such a pain to travel in these autos and especially when you know that person is wrong and you are fighting for your money and have to literally fight, scream ur lungs out to these rouges to get your money back. Its high time some strict action is taking on these auto waalas. Everyday one cant keep taking the auto guys to the police station.
Wake up Government..Do something ! Bring in some action.
I sincerely hope some action is taken, or else we the people will have to create more awareness with the help of media rather than waiting for these governing bodies to wake up and create a difference !
I sincerely hope some good rule comes into place to keep a check on these Rouges ! There is no point in people putting in their concerns here if no action is being taken.
