[Resolved]  Indian Police — Corruption and Unauthorized violence

Address:Udupi, Karnataka

I am a student of Manipal University. I have a complaint against the police here. They are using unauthorized force and violence and make unlawful arrests. If students are found outside late at night they are subjected to brutality. This has happened many times and no one is taking any action. The students here are under the protection of the college. They do not intervene and allow the police to take bribes and behave like cheap thugs rather than enforcers of the law. These policemen sexually harass female students while the male students are beaten. I have yet to hear of a law or a curfew which says people may not be outside after 12. The students are not running around prostituting themselves or misbehaving. Most of them are either heading home or going to eat something. Another issue is these so called "police officers" seem to act only when there is a female in presence. If two or more boys are outside they are let go without any punishment or threats while in the presence of a female everyone, including the girl is threatened to be taken to the police station all the while being abused with vulgar language. These "officers" are drunk themselves most of the time and verbally abuse the women calling them "a bloody " and "###". I would like to know what i can do as clearly no one else will and the government in karnataka is apparently too corrupt to take any action.

I agree with u dear here in Cuttack& Bhubaneswar- orissa People are treated like cats and dogs by police there is no respect for poor indians by these comissonerate police, these police men are looting us in various ways and one of the looting way is taking money forcefully from our indian brothers and sister who ever are driving bike without helmet, when we r independent that means we may not be penalised for this helmet as rs100.00 per head all people including police men are only working on how to snatch money and become rich, please look into this matter bcs it is very important, i belong to cuttack orissa where everyday people are facing a lots of problems while travelling in towns from these police men they are seeking money from the persons who is not wearing helmet, i m asking this is why ???? and if this remain like this then the days are no more away when police will knock the door in the night and will check how your doing sex with ur wife whether your wearing or not ?? i[censored] will not wear then they will check and fine u upto Rs500.00 please consider this matter, our india is today independent but we poor people are till now treated like cats and dogs by these police, some years ago what britisher were done are now be carried out by these policemen now a days, pls consider this matter very seriously, otherwise i have also the power of collecting people and we will take our own judgements very soon against this, it will be better if solved by governments .
We have creek near my home called as Kolshet. It is located about 200m from residential area, and people come there for roaming and as it is good place like seashore.

Some local people come there for drink also.

Today we (me and my friend (he))had gone for roaming and just we were talking where, 2 policemen caught us, saying you should not be here, it is restricted area at night. But actually nowhere it is mentioned and many people come here everyday.

Then he took my license and told us to come to police station and he will report a case on us against vehicle act something 126. and we will have to pay rs. 2000. and taken my license.

Then on the way he started frightening us, and told us to give them bribe, when i offered 100rs. he was unhappy and asked my friend to give more 100rs.

This type of cases are happening frequently.
varenyavk (your post of Apr23): It seems like a sticky situation. Couple things cross my mind - 1. do these said officers not have a superviser that they report to (most everybody has one). 2. Could you not sort it out with the university authorities? 3. Wouldn't the consumer forum be able to help you or at least, guide you in the proper direction?
And your post of Apr 24 : Who's it that YOU are verbally abusive here? Wish you used a more civic language to communicate with whoever it is that is misusing the forum - it is a public forum, afterall, with, I believe moderators?
