[Resolved]  NSDL - PAN Change Request Online — Unable to change my address in PAN

Dear sir,

I was happy to see online application introduced which would immensely help the PAN card applicants to apply for a new pan card or change the existing one.

I am PAN card holder for more than 10 years with my name present in your records as "S Narayanan". Since I shifted from Orissa to Chennai, I thought o[censored]pdating my address with the income tax department so that I get my communications in the new address. I went to the online change of PAN data form and just wanted to change the address data. I wanted to continue having my name as it is presently as "S.Narayanan" . I was not allowed to give my name as S Narayanan. It seems that you have suddely changed the rule not to allow initials. In south India 80% of the people have their names with intials and all of them have it(with initials only) as a full name in all their exiting documents/proofs.

Nevertheless I thought like PASSPORT you want a uniformity and I continued filling my full name as asked by you and then selected my copy of passport(which has my full name) as an identity proof and selected bank statement as my address proof. My Bank statement and all other documents have my name as S Narayanan and not in the expanded format. Since I have given my passport which has my full name, and the bank statement (which has my name as S. Narayanan), I thought the same will suffice. But my application has been rejected saying the name in my address proof does not match with the name given in application, On calling your customer care I am said to go to gazatted officer to certify S Narayanan and Subramanian Narayanan are the same. This is bizarre..

First of all I dont want a change in my name and I am ok with the existing name in your PAN data as S. Narayanan and I only want to update my address not my name, so the name given in my address proof exactly matches with the existing name in your database and it should suffice.

If you have suddenly changed the rule to have full names of applicants, it is fine but your change in rule should accomodate that the proof of address documents might have names in the non expanded format, and the same should be accepted. or alternatively You may decide to not change my name since there is no valid proof and keep it as it is but you should update just my address as my address proof has my existing name as per your PAN data and I have a right to be communicated in the new address i now reside in. But you are doing neither. How do you expect us to be communicated If we are unable to update my current address.


Getting a certificate for gazatted officer is no big an issue, and i will get it done, but the idea of posting it here is to bring to the notice of the income tax dept and NSDL dept that any change should be well thought over and accordingly accomodated to help people use the online service and not make them run for create documents which is not necessary at all.

With reference to your PAN Application vide Ack No. [protected], please note that we have observed following discrepancy(ies).

* Proof of Address is invalid ie..
Bank account statement/passbook - Last name intials

As per procedure prescribed by Income Tax Department an applicant is required to give name in full expanded form (initials not allowed) and forward proof of address in the name of applicant matching the application details.


We request you to remove the above mentioned discrepancy(ies) by submitting required documents. You may check the link

Please note that your PAN application will be processed only on receipt of the above said requisite documents. Kindly quote your 15 digit Ack No on the documents being submitted as proof and on the envelope as well.
