[Resolved]  Sanjay Nagar, Police Station — Corruption by Passport verification officer

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is K Bhargava Ram and I am an employee of Amazon Development Centre India Pvt Ltd. working as Software Engineer. I have been staying in Bangalore for more than 3 years and at the current address for more than 2 years. I applied for Passport on 23-NOV-09. On 28-11-09, verification officer (he introduced himself as Anand) from Sanjaya Nagar (Where I currently stay) informed me that I should go to the police station with some address proof documents and photographs. I went to the station on 29-11-09 and submitted the documents. During this, the verification officer asked me for the ‘fees’. As for as I know, there are no user charges for getting police verification done (please correct me If I am wrong). I refused to pay the so called ‘fees’ and officer’s behavior changed immediately. I was there while few other people getting verification done, and I saw that the officer was filling some forms for every passport while the applicant was there. He did not do anything with my application expect attaching the documents and photos I gave him and said that it is done. Today[protected], seeing that status of my passport verification is still pending on ‘police verification’. I went to the station and asked for the status of verification and the officer was not giving a straight answer and just said ‘commissioner office. When I pressed for how much time would it take, he said ‘1 month’. So I have the following questions.

1. What is the maximum time that a police station can take before confirming/rejecting the passport application. (My guess is it will not take a month, as my friend got his verification done in 2-3 days and he received his passport within 20 days of applying. This must be because my rejecting of paying the bribe).
2. If the verification is not done within the expected period, what are the steps that I should take to get my passport in the quickest time possible.

Please help me in this regard.
