Fortis Healthcare — To express my grievances about the healthcare system at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, Kolkata

Address:Kolkata

Hello,

This is to bring to your kind notice that my mother Mrs.TAPATI DASGUPTA BISWAS, was admitted at Fortis Hospital on 2nd October, 2020(Friday) under DR.PARTHA KARMAKAR, since she was passing blood from her stool and vomitting continuously. From that day onwards they had planned a gastroscopy but however later he cited reasons that the Gastroenterologist DR.DEBASHISH DATTA, who was treating mom had apparently deferred the procedure due to certain medical observations. However, that said, I've not been given a clear explanation of what caused the bleeding and the most annoying part was on the day of the discharge I hadn't even met the doctor nor did he feel the need to meet me and explain things to me one last time.
In this regard I intend to bring to light the following issues that I remain utterly dissatisfied with:
1.Some medicines that she had been taking(due to.other existing comorbidities) have been discontinued (Namely: NICORANDIL, CLINDIPINE, METOPROLOL, TORSEMIDE, PRAZOSIN).I'm sure there are reasons for that but what bothers me is that the reasons remain unexplained, cause I've not had any proper discussion with the consulting doctor regarding that.
2.Everytime we went to meet him ( DR.PARTHA KARMAKAR ), he either acted agitated and gave us a cursory explanation about the treatment, and that's about it. He had informed me on Friday (8/10/20) that he would observe her and let me know on Monday (12/10/20) about what is to be done. Instead, he informed me about the discharge, over the phone, on Monday (12/10/20); that too while I was traveling and thereafter I've not even met him. I happened to run into him while he was waiting near the lift and whatever little conversation we've had was near the lift. I'm not quite sure if that's the place alloted for discussions about patients at your hospital.
3.I've not once met the Gastroenterologist ( DR.DEBASHISH DATTA), treating mom and nobody even felt the need to summon me. I don't know if you expect me to leave all my work behind and run after doctors to get some time from them ?
4.My mother is on regular dialysis, and when she was admitted she had a weight of 40kg (post dialysis weight, since she had a dialysis that morning, Friday 2/10/20) and on Monday(12/10/20) her post dialysis weight at the hospital was 44.4kgs. I don't know what went wrong and there can be N number of issues I'm sure, but I really am eager to know that do I not deserve an explanation about everything that happened during her stay at the hospital?
5. The dialysis reports have not been shared with us and when I had previously checked the reports from the nurse I discovered that the pre and post dialysis weights on the 4th of October, 20 had not been mentioned. Can one of you kindly step up and explain the reason behind this?
6.I read in the Discharge Summary that Diabetic Retinopathy has been mentioned as one of the diagnosis, would one of you care to explain what actally has been done about that ? or has that just been mentioned to add snob value to the diagnosis?
7.Also, the nursing services provided were equally substandard and I had also complained about the same at the grievance cell but barely anything had been done about it. So I had to further call the nursing department to take care of the crisis I was in the midst of .

I'm so thoroughly disappointed with the experience I have had at your hospital and I urge you to kindly take due action against this kind of irresponsible behaviour else I'll have to escalate this to the higher authorities.
8.Last but most importatly, I had mentioned certain issues at the end of the discharge summary, among which I would like to reiterate the point where the doctor claimed under 'Course in the Hospital' that the family had refused the stay at the HDU against the Doctor's will. This is completely untrue since I don't remember any such instance where he had suggested anything even close to what has been stated.

Thank youRegards
Titas Biswas(Daughter)
