I am sorry to hear about it. Based on your post, it may be a hardware issue. I’d like to check with you, you mentioned that HDD installed in PC; its as primary or secondary drive? If as primary, did you try to install OS on it? During the data transfer, is there any LED light blinking on WD My Book? Could you give me some more details about that? Give snapshot or the specific error message, When you are installing the HDD. For the meantime, I suggest you some basic troubleshooting steps that may help you to solve the issue.
1) Make sure the power is turn on.
2) Try to connect with different USB ports with the same computer.
3) Change the USB cable (USB 3.0).
4) Try to connect with other computer.
