[Resolved]  Honda, Unicorn — Rusted Fuel Tank

Address:Bangalore, Karnataka

I Enjoy the Quality***

*** Only for 2 years.

Honda should seriously think of changing their punch line to this. Because that's the fact, they cannot give warranty any of their parts after 2 years, they know that it will be come unusable after 2 years.

I own a Honda Unicorn bike which i am using for almost 6 years now. Its running , there were issue here and there, but it was ok. I was able to use it without many problem. I used to do proper checkup at authorized service centers where they took a lot of money for a water wash.

Last week i found that i am out of fuel and then when i filled it i came to a reality that my fuel tank has a hole. I took to a mechanic and he said its repairable and he used air to clean the tank. To his shock almost 10 new holes appeared on the fuel tank.

I called up Honda, Bangalore office, Guragon office, they both gave a statement that rusting is normal and they dont have a geological department to check why it happens. There is no warranty or partial waranty. No to keep ENJOYING THE QUALITY i have to spend 6000/- for getting a new fuel tank. There is a clause, there is no warranty for the new parts too. How is the deal ? Interesting.

So if you are lucky you have to spend another 6000/- in less than an year, because I ENJOY THE QUALITY**

I am seriosly thinking of filing a consumer compaint in court, Honda cannot cheat people like this. Fuel tank cost 15% of the bike and how can they give such poor quality.

Guys if you are thinkig of buying Honda products check the warranty policy and details before jumping in for I ENJOY THE QUALITY**.

Exactly same thing happened to me.

After 6 years and some 33000 kms, my bike's petrol tank got a hole in the first monsoon shower. I had to drag my bike in rain for about 1km back to my home and later another one to mechanic shop next day. The first mechanic just checked whether the petrol was there in the tank and for that he just removed the inlet pipe from the control unit and there was not a drop of petrol and found some disconnected tube and attributed that as a cause of the leak. Asked me to get the petrol filled. I went to petrol pump and asked for filling person to fill the petrol of worth 200 Rs. She did that, and once it reached at 150, I realized that petrol was leaking. I asked her to stop and she did that only on 190, what a day it was!.. I tried to collect whatever I could. In this unfriendly Chennai petrol pump staff didn't even give me empty funnel or bottle to collect the petrol.

Then I took the bike to another mechanic which found there was a hole in the petrol tank. He soldered it and put m-seal on top of that. When we fixed and filled it with petrol again petrol started coming out. To my dismay entire tank got holes. I asked for the new tank but since it is a rare accessory mechanic couldn't arrange it. So he promised me to fix the holes by welding entire tank. It costed me 500 Rs in repair and I had wasted petrol worth of Rs 500 by this time. I used to love Honda but not any more. I've to still go to service center to get a new tank. I am very sad to find out that chances of getting insurance claim for the tank is very less. I am planning to replace my bike instead.

The bike refused to start on my Visa interview day. That was another story. I don't recommend Unicorn any more.
I too am a victim of this low quality product from Honda.
From the above complaint and the comment, it appears that all Unicorn bikes manufactured in Yr 2005/2006 have this problem of rust in the Petrol tank. I have bought my Unicorn bike in Bangalore in May2005 and earlier this year, was surprised to find the entire Carburetor clogged due to rust formed in the tank.. Luckily, there are no visible holes in the tank as yet but i can smell Petrol every day. I have got my tank water washed [high pressure] twice and then blowed hot air for drying. Yet, the carburator still gets clogged. To avoid the clogging, i have placed a 2 stage filter from the fuel tap to carburator. But then too, the bike is not running well.
Another design problem is that the neck inside the tank runs 5 inches deep into the tank and it is fully rusted. So every time, i fill petrol, some of the rust gets flows alongwith the Petrol and settles inside the tank.
The end result is to get a new tank from the Company, which costs rs.6, 000. This is absolute cheating by the Honda company.
I too faced the problem, I thought Honda is good. I go the bike in 2006. Regularly I will do service in Honda showrooms with AMCs. Every service they started collected 1500 to 2000 saying parts gone need to change. One day I gave service during the service they called and told fuel tank has hole. It needs to be change cost more than 6, 000. I felt bad during the last service they collected around 4500 for Disc break gear/junction changed I never recommend Honda for anyone in my life. I thought of going for car in Honda I changed my mind.
I am facing the same problem. I am getting new holes after few days . Till date got 10 holes due to rust, just dont understand what to do. In future will never recommend honda.
