[Resolved]  HSBC Credit Card — Wrong Charges

My credit card had a total outstanding of Rs 110,700 as on 4th September. The due date was 26th September . On 25th I got a call from the customer care asking me for the payment. I wanted to settle the entire amount, so I asked them to send their executive. 26th, 27th and 28th were holidays, hence the executive was supposed to come on 29th. The executive however did not come on 29th. So on 30th , I called up the IVR system and came to know from the automated response, that the total outstanding was now Rs 111,700/-. I assumed that it would be due to late payment charges, hence I issues a cheque of Rs 111,700/- on 30th September, which due to bank holiday on 30th and 2nd Oct, got cleared only on 3rd October. Today when I called up the customer care to verify if my credit card balance was zero or not, I came to know that my balance was Rs 3600/- on account of finance charges.

My statement is generated on 4th of every month, so why were the finance charges levied when I had made the total outstanding payment on 3rd itself. Also, nowhere in the terms and conditions does it mention the duration for which the finance charges will be applied. Also, why should I pay Rs 3600/ because their executive did not turn up on the decided date. Also , why did the IVR system show the total outstanding without the finance charges if there were supposed to be any on 1st October. How come in one day i.e between 1st and 3rd October , suddenly there were finance charges levied.

Its extremely stressful to have these conversations with the customer care guys since they are rude and extremely non customer friendly.

HSBC Credit Card — BILLED FOR HEALTH INSURANCE WITHOUT INFORMATION

I took a credit card from HSBC in June 2008 confirming that there are no annual charges attached with the card. However I recieved my first bill of Rs 785 for the period of 22nd June-08 to 22nd-july-08.

The Bill was clasified as below:

30 JUN Lifestyle Processing Fee 279.78
24 JUN REPAYMENT PROTECTION PREMIUM 505.62

I considered it to be just an error and thought of calling the bank, but due to a hectic schedule it slipped my mind and subsequently I recieved a second bill.

I then called the customer care and was informed that I had opted for a health insurance plan along with the card which I had not. I asked them to waive off the charges but they kept saying that they could not do it as the bill was generated and I had complianed late.

My concern is why should I pay if I haven't used the card till now and also when I had not opted for any plans. I kept recieving bills with increasing amounts and got a few calls as weel to pay my baance. I kept asking the same question, but they were not ready to waive off the charges.

When I stopped recieving the calls I made 3 calls to the customer care and also to a senior person based in chennai, but got the same response from everywhere.I stopped getting calls and the bills, then I called again to the customer care and was informed that the bill is now over Rs 6800 and the collection department will be taking care of it. I called the collection department and was informed that a seperate agency would be taking care of it. I don't understand what is going on and what should I do.
How can a bank loose its reputation for a small amount of money. I am worried about my staus in CIBIL which can affect my future credits.

Kindly guide me where and whom should I approach.

HSBC Bank — Annual fee charged and interest incorrect

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been issued a credit card from HSBC (card no.[protected]) as a free card. At the time of applying for the credit card as well as at the time of telephonic verification, I had orally confirmed that the cards were life time free cards. However, recently my card account has been debited with annual charges. When contacted, the officials in HSBC now say that HSBC cards are not life time free cards and it is subject to annual charges and that it has been mentioned in the tariff card of the credit card service guide.

It is a matter of common sense for me that when all the other banks are offering life time free cards from around five years back, why would one customer go for a paid card? The point is that at the time of issue and verification of credit card I have been cheated by telling that the cards are life time free.

It is true that when we do not have the chances of getting a free card in any other bank then we would go to a paid card.

When i received SMS 23/11/2009 saying total payment of 27271 and as per the calculation it should have been Rs.24500 .

i gave a call to customer care said some extra charge have been added to my card and Customer care person replied your card is not free card(which is cover in above paragraph) and they calculated inserted for which i already paid for Rs.20000 and i requested to block the card and i asked for reversal of extra charges interference no[protected] but no action is taken yet.

I faced same problem last november'08 they charged me with annual fee. Please look up the break up charges.

Can you help me on this...Also is there any RBI rule on interest charges which these bank can charged by these bank

With a great difficulty I'm paying your dues but you people are making my life very difficult.

I used to receive call from your collection department every day at least 20 times regularly but i used to explain the problem daily but still they use to ask same question and give same reply for my problem..

Which really disturbed my regular life. Please instruct your staff / call center not to harass over phone.

I holed payment due to above reason.

Again I would like to request you please reverse the late fee for last months, annual fee and extra intrest charge as charged in the statement. Based on your response I shall make the payment and reconsider my decision whether to continue with the card or not.

HSBC had levied wrong finance charges and late payment charges of Rs. 1360.60 on my card in November 2007, after making several requests on the phone and writing 4 letters to the bank over the last 2 years, till date they have not reversed the charges and they continue to levy more finance charges on these and have inflated the amount to 14702.87.

Earlier the bank did not respond to my letters sent in April 2008 & June 2008nor were they accpeting my card cancellation request.

However after writing to the nodal officer in December 2009, I did get a reply confirming that the card had been cancelled, but they have refused to reverse the charges.

The detailed trail of events is as under...

The problem dates back to October 2007…

November 07: I received a call from HSBC inquiring if I have made the credit card payment and since I was traveling I had informed them that the cheque was handed over at my office and would be dropped at the drop box and subsequently I had confirmed with my office that the cheque was dropped on 07/11/07.

17/10/07 – 16/11/07 bill: I was charged undue finance charges of Rs. 1360.60(incl. service tax) on supposedly delayed payment of credit card, as explained earlier the payment was dropped on time, hence I called up the customer service and explained the problem and requested for reversal of the wrong charges, but she insisted that the payment was dropped late and hence I requested for card cancellation.

12/12/07: Received a call from HSBC (from Chennai - 044 code) asking for reason of cancellation and when I explained them the above reason they said that the charges would be reversed and I should continue to use the card.
There was an outstanding payment of Rs 382.45 in the statement period 17/10/07 – 16/11/07 and I was assured I am not supposed to pay this, since the wrong charges in this statement of Rs. 1360.60 which had been reversed and the current outstanding was nil.

17/11/07 – 15/12/07 bill: Charges were not reversed as conveyed to me and to my surprise additional late payment + finance charges of Rs. 662.20 (incl. service tax) were added.

24/12/2007: I received a call from collection department, which was surprising since the last date of payment was on 07/01/08, when asked the reason for the call they informed that 2 bills were unpaid (17/10/07 – 16/11/07 bill & 17/11/07 – 15/12/07 bill), hence I discussed with them about the 17/10/07 – 16/11/07 bill which I was told has nil payment after adjustment of charges, they assured me both the bills charges would be reversed and I should make a payment of the actual spending on my card of Rs. 7476.85 immediately. They said they would send someone for collection and I should not drop the cheque at the drop-box.
By this time I was already fed-up of your false promises and told them I would make the payment only if the card would be cancelled, they said I should make the payment and the card cancellation request was accepted and would be processed after the cheque was cleared.
The payment of Rs. 7476.85 was collected on 30/12/07.

16/12/07 – 16/01/08 bill: To my utter surprise and frustration I received a bill showing o/s of Rs. 2092.92 (all of which was due to wrong charges)
Rs. 1360.60 17/10/07 – 16/11/07 bill
Plus Rs. 662.20 17/11/07 – 15/12/07 bill
Plus Rs. 182.48 added now in the 16/12/07 – 16/01/08 bill
Less Rs. 112.36 unexplainable credit of charges which is not corresponding to any given month
Total Rs. 2092.95

15/01/08: I used my card to check whether the card cancellation was atleast done or not. Again to my frustration the transaction got through.

22/02/08: I once again used my card to check whether the card cancellation was done or not. Again to my frustration the transaction got through.

06/03/08: Called customer service spoke to Mr. Nilesh and informed him of the entire above stated history and requested to accept request for card cancellation, he transferred to the card cancellation department and even after 7 mins of hold nobody came on the line. I disconnected and dialed again and after 20 mins of hold the call was disconnected by your customer service department.

17/12/08 – 15/03/08 bill: O/s was Rs. 6519.59, out of which the actual spend was only of Rs. 3203.33, the balance Rs. 3316.26 was the accumulation of wrong charges.
Rs. 1360.60 17/10/07 – 16/11/07 bill
Plus Rs. 662.20 17/11/07 – 15/12/07 bill
Plus Rs. 182.48 16/12/07 – 16/01/08 bill
Less Rs. 112.36 16/12/07 – 16/01/08 bill unexplainable credit
Plus Rs. 840.24 17/01/08 – 16/02/08 bill
Less Rs. 25.00 17/01/08 – 16/02/08 fuel surcharge credit
Plus Rs. 408.10 17/02/08 – 16/03/08 bill
Total Rs. 3316.26

16/04/08: Submitted a letter to the bank explaining the whole problem and requested for card cancellation. I had clearly stated in the letter that I would not pay any of the undue charges that had been levied and the actual amount due of Rs. 3203.33 was already paid.

10/06/08: Since the bills had still not stopped coming and every month finance charges were being piled up on the undue charges, I wrote a reminder letter to the bank for cancellation of card & requested for a reply.

2008 August 1st week: Since the bills and piling up of finance charges had still not stopped and no reply letter was received from the bank I once again called the customer service and was told to visit the branch and the issue would be resolved.
I visited the Andheri East branch in August 1st week but the executive at the branch told me that he can’t do anything about it and registered a feedback no. [protected] requesting for status confirmation letter. He also suggested that I speak to the call centre from the branch itself and they suggested to get in touch with the recovery agents to settle the issue. I had been given the following telephone numbers and contact persons[protected]Seema Shekhavat) /[protected]Gaurav Mehra), however I could never get through these numbers or these people were never available.

In between I did get a call or two for payment and I had requested for a reply to my earlier letters, but till date no reply has been received from the bank. However the bank diligently keeps sending me bills for a card which does not exist anymore levying finance charges month on month on an amount which was initially under dispute.

I believe I had tried enough to set the record straight with the bank but since there was no response to either letters or any satisfactory reply on calls I had dropped the matter choosing to ignore the wrong bills the way the bank had chosen to ignore my complaints.

2009 November 4th week: I was in for a rude shock when I started receiving obnoxious calls from your Delhi call centre for the payments. That is when I dug up all the previous paper work and give it one last try to get it settled with the bank and sent a letter on 07/12/09.

The bank has finally replied to my letters in December 2009 but has refused to reverse the charges.

The piling up of charges over the undue charges alone has lead to the current o/s of Rs. 14129.03, there is not a single paisa which I have actually spent and not paid to the bank. In view of the above trail of events I am not unjustified in asking for closure of this long trail and reversal of the entire amount of Rs. 14129.03.

I wish to lodge a complaint with Banking Ombudsman & the consumer court... could somebody please guide me to the detailed procedure of lodging complaints with the two.

HSBC Credit Card — undue Charges and false promises

I have been using a HSBC Card for last 6 years. The time it was issued I was told it is a life time free card and for the last 5 years no annual charges were levied on me.

This year since I have not used the card for the last 12-14 mths they levied me annual charges and not informed me either.

Now they are threatening that either I pay up this amount which has snowballed to 4.7 K or they will report me to CIBIL.

Can the bank authorities and the Forum members suggest me a course of action.
out of this 4.7 K I have not made any purchases its all annual charges and the interest there of.

Dear Prajesh

Exactly same thing happened with me.
I am extremely cautious regarding financial institutions.

I filled the application form myself thats why I know that I have not opted for any AIG Policy.
I got a TATA AIG policy after free look period (15 days)
I Called AIG customer care immediately and asked for policy cancellation.
AIG person accepted to do so. (I noted down the Cancellation request no.)
Same day I called HSBC regarding the same.
I got the same answer..." You need to pay nothing. It will get reversed in next bill" (I noted down the reference no.)
But on safer side I paid "Minimum Amount Due" in order to avoid late payment charges.
In next bill also It did not happened . I called again customer care.

I got same answer once again.(I noted down the request no.)
Once again I paid "Minimum Amount Due" in order to avoid late payment charges.

Same activity on third bill.

Finally in fourth bill I paid total amount due.

After clearence of checque, I Called HSBC customer care for cancellation of credit card.
They asked me the reason.
I told them that HSBC has done fraud with me.
You have given me AIG policy without my sign or approval then you can charge any amount in future.

Then they asked me wether I have signed any add on page I told 'NO'

(HSBC has issued me AIG policy based on fake sign on add on page)

Dear, I was knowing that I am paying for nothing, But I was knowing about the complications.

(Unfornatunately you faced it.)
