[Resolved]  ICFAI University — Black mail by ICFAI, unable to get back my cheques

I applied for ICFAI Executive program by submitting my application to their Kochi, Kerala office. I paid Rs 20,000/- as initial payment and gave them 15 post dated cheques worth Rs 9750/- each. This was on 18th of Dec 07. I was told that confirmation of my admission would be sent to me only by Jan 08.

After two days, I got an offer due to which I was sure that I could not complete the course as it included mandatory visit to ICFAI campus in Hyderabad. I sent an email to SSD requesting withdrawal of my application, but the email kept bouncing back saying the mail box was full. Then I submitted a hardcopy of request for withdrawal with the Kochi office, and got a copy signed by the branch manager accepting the withdrawal. She assured me that she would take care and get the money back. I had mentioned in the letter that I have asked my bank to block the cheque. All this happened, before my application was accepted by ICFAI.

I didn't accept any study material from ICFAI, but now they are threatening to take me to court because I had blocked the 15 cheques which I had given to them.

Now either I have to pay 1.4 lacs for nothing or have to take legal help. I am not sure what I should do. I have already lost Rs 20000/- which I am ready to forego.

“No AICTE approval for ICFAI courses”
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has not approved any of the courses conducted either by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) Society or those offered by the ICFAI University, Dehra Dun.
The AICTE has made this submission in its counter to a writ petition filed in the Madras High Court by B.N. Devadas of K.K.Nagar West. He sought a direction to the authorities to close down the 22 ICFAI National Colleges, the institute’s business school conducting full-time academic programs, and the ICFAI Study Centre for 360 flexible-learning programmes, and to stop the university granting degrees all over Tamil Nadu.
AICTE Regional Officer Sandeep Singhal said the council, empowered to regulate technical education system all over the country, had initiated action against unapproved institutions offering technical education.
It had issued show-cause notices to institutions whenever it had information that they were offering unapproved courses. It had also asked the State governments to close down these institutions.

Dear Anand Krishnan,

The advice seems to be ill conceived.Aftermath of news published in the news papers in the month of August 2008, regarding counter filed by the AICTE in the writ petition filed by the B N Devadas against the ICFAI, before the Hon'ble High Court of Madras, I personally enquired the matter by various means. I have read the reply affidavits filed by both the Institute and University along with supported documents to the Counter filed by the AICTE regional officer. In the reply affidavits, they stated that AICTE has misconstrued/suppressed the judgment passed by the Hon'ble High court of the Bombay and also Hon'ble High court of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, wherein both the courts passed the orders in favour of ICFAI, stating that ICFAI and its constituents do not require AICTE approval for running the programs. In the said reply affidavit ICFAI reiterated that some vested interest people are behind the back of the Writ Petition and also the said news to tarnish the image and reputation of the Institute. AICTE has not denied the facts stated in the reply affidavit of the ICFAI and matter is pending for orders.

I came to know that AICTE has issued notices to the ICFAI and the same were challenged before the Hon'ble High Court of Madras in W.P.No17126 and 17127 of 2008. In these matters High Court has passed orders dt.[protected], in favour of ICFAI and stayed AICTE notices. I also came to know that Supreme Court in Bharathidasan University case held that the University established as per the UGC Act, need not require AICTE approval to conduct a program. I enquired some of senior students who completed programs and came to know that the degree awarded by the ICFAI University has good reputation in the employment field.

I have wasted my valuable time to get clarification for so many doubts, which surrounded me after reading the said fake news. Hence, I feel that it is necessary to share my experience to those who are sincere in their studies to avoid wastage of time in getting the clarification on false and fake news of vested interest persons, who are creating un-necessary confusion.

Dear Navdeep Singh,

At the time of contract with ICFAI, your intention was to do the course.

Afterwards "I got an offer due to which I was sure that I could not complete the course as it included mandatory visit to ICFAI campus in Hyderabad".

You are admitting you are the defaulter. Then how you can claim for a refund.

Have you ever heard a news that a government college or university will refund the tuition fee, if the student didnt attend the classes?

Then how dare you can talk about a genuine university under section 2(f) UGC Act, to refund tution fees.
Are you kidding?
ICFAI University having same status of your Kerala University or Cochin University or Bangalore university. Do you know that?

ICFAI University — No Response and Unable persue my course

Dear Sir,

I had joined ICFAI MBA program in the year 2007 and my Enrollment no is MBA2092333. I couldn't appear in the examination for last 2 years due to work pressure and family reasons. But 2 months back i tried to contact ICFAI through their website and sent several emails for continuing my course, I haven't got any response from their side neither they have replied back for my emails. The worst moment is I have paid my entire fees of Rs.60000 and I haven't got my course material of 2nd year or neither any correspondance inspite of giving change of address.

Take Legal help and involve media as well. All the rules that are written in the "Rules & Regulation" Handbook does not hold good in the court of law.
i can't agree with the statement because icfai is one of the good colleges for mba
I am also a student enrolled for correspondence course of MBA, my enrollment num-MBA2070096 and facing same problem.
dear students i agree with Krishanan Iyer that a university does not need an approval of aicte to start new course. i hav enquired about all the cases filed againsts icfai and also about ugc and aicte.. so from all these it becomes crystel clear that aicte has no ryt to interfare a university or a university approved by ugc never ever require an approval of aicte...for more info. u can search the net for the ugc and aicte acts wherein these things clearly mentioned and explained..still i[censored] people are not satisfied then read the judgement given by supreme court againsts the case of bharatidashan university and aicte...lastly the education methodology and course structure of icfai have great standard which the other government universities do not have
The old website is not working any more.

I think they are changing websites frequently without informing to the candidates properly.

This is with reference to your complaint posted on Consumer Complaints website on 11-12-08. Our response is given below:

You are pursuing a program direct from the university and all necessary approvals are in place. Hence you need not have any apprehension about the validity of the program. Please refer to our website http://www.iutripura.edu.in/ugcapproval.asp
