Rented House - cost of owner's items lost in theft

I am staying in a rented house at Jodhpur. When I was out station, theft occurred in the house and bath room fittings (8 nos., mixture/non mixture type) are stolen. The house was properly locked when I left the station and the house owner was intimated regarding my absence.. The thief broke open a window glass (without grill), entered the house and took away the bathroom fittings. No other items are lost. Since the agreement for lease states that, when I vacate the house I have to hand over the house in the original condition, the house owner demands me to purchase new fittings against the lost ones.

Since theft is not due to the negligence from my part, intimation was given to the owner regarding my absence from the station and the theft happened during my absence, I feel, I should not be responsible for the theft and the house owner should bear the cost of stolen items.

Please advise me on the above for further course of actions.

It is the duty of owner/lanlord to make sure that the doors and windows are secured. It is not your fault for not having a grill for the window.

However, you should have told the owner that the window is not secure.

Give a police compalint and a consumer complaint.
