The legal standing of Facebook asking for government issue ID is very grey. But it is also a disaster waiting to happen - for the sort of ID they are asking for is exactly the sort of stuff you do not send online. Yeah FB says they will delete the information after confirmation -but once something is out there it is out of your control and available to some hacker sooner or later.
I was trying to login to my facebook account and it asked me to submit a identity proof if its really me and facebook is forcing users to submit their government issued id cards for proof that the id really belongs to me.
