[Resolved]  DR.V.Vishwanathan, Pediatric neurologist at child trust hospital. Chennai — Does not have the basic etiquette of a doctor

I wish to bring to your kind attention the following incident that happened on 2nd march 2010, while i brought my sick daughter for consultation. I want to express my deep anguish on the extremely harsh, inhuman treatment meated out to me by the so called pediatric neurologist Dr. V.Vishwanathan on 02.03.010. How can a doctor behave to a fellow human being without the basic etiquette? I am a doctor in government service, and its appalling to see a doctor shout at the patient's attender in a private hospital set up and fling away the case file, when we doctors in government service fear the most because of the awarenes and litiginous nature of our public today. Is he a philanthropist doing social service free of cost?.After me paying Rs.300/- and waiting to see him for nearly four hours, is he doing service by shouting at me in front of his assistant doctor and paramedical staff and throwing off my file? Due to many unavoidable personal reasons i could not follow up with him. He is accusing me of doctor shopping as though it is so cheap and free of cost. In a democratic country like India a person has every right to choose his consultant. When I come back it is the basic duty of the consultant to treat me properly. If he can throw the file at a doctor like me, iam afraid of the plight of the common men who come to him. Can he dare do the same thing to a person in UK or US? There, for money he might be worshipping his patients. He is shouting at me for taking MRI Brain for my daughter as seizure is a neurophysiological problem. I did' nt go and do MRI out of my own will and wish. It was advised by a neurologist like him. If there is no structural problem of brain in seizure disorder then why did he ask for CT brain plain and contrast in his past consultation. A physician is expected to have empathy with the patient. Is he a physician or a politician? I know very well that this mail is not going to bring about any change in the mental agony he caused by his weird behaviour. I once again condemn his inhuman behaviour.

I totally disagree with the compalinants. We have been taking our daughter to him for the last 5 years for epilepsy. He is very patient in hearing the problems of the child. He always tell us about the possible side effects of the medicine if he wants to change. Whenever we seek advise from him through E mail, he responds immediately and sends reply to the e mail. We have been moving from Chennai to AP, Maharashtra and even aborad. But we are in contact with him through E mail. We take our daughter for his consultation from wherever we are. It is very disturbing to hear such kind of complaints about a good doctor like V Vishwanathan. The doctor definitely gets irritated when the patient or the parents start arguing with him and try to put their words in his mouth.
It is very interesting to note that there are comments extremely skewed to one side or the other, which rather speaks very poorly of the Doctor, unfortunately. Being a doctor and a pediatrician myself, my understanding of the profession is that, it is a consumer-friendly field that expects doctors to provide "service" to their patients - who are the consumers. Patient care has to be standardized, irrespective of whether the doctor likes the patient or not. As a doctor, one cannot be nice to a patient and monstorous with the other. It is very unprofessional and morally/ethically incorrect. I apologize to the parents who have been disrepected and also to those who consider this Doctor next to God as my intentions are not to break it. You have to have belief in your doctor and the moment you lose trust, it is improtant that you reconsider your options in the best interest of your child.
We must understand that patient-care does not invlove just the doctor and the patient, more so in pediatrics. It also invloves the care takers who are the parents. Of course, the person incharge or guiding this team is the Doctor (DO NOT forget docotrs - with power comes responsiblity), but often doctors tend to forget that the priority is to the patient's welfare and not to allow their egos to play around.
In this particular case, I feel the parent's agony is very reasonable. As a parent you are worried about your child and have every right in this world to ascertain that your child is getting the best care possible and you are doing the best in your capacity to acheive this. This misunderstanding would not have arisen if the Doctor cared to communicate well with his patients. Very often, we find doctors especially in our culture, abstaining from keeping the patients and/or the parents informed about what exactly is going on. I cannot emphasize more on keeping the parents in the loop and making them active participants in the treatment process or decision making. The world is changing and the general public is far more educated and informed and has the capcity to understand medical processes. I think as a community, we doctors have to move away from the age-old behaviour pattern of not allowing patients to be active participants. They must know the reason behind each decision the doctor makes and know what their options are. We should stay away from the belief that patients do not understand and are not priviliged to know what treatment they are going to receive. It is also the fault of people like some on this forum who refuse to ask questions to doctors as they think it is disrespectful. Of course, there has to be some professionalism in doing so and not with the intention of questioning the doctors credibility. So please ask questions and also please know what you want to know from the doctor during your visit. It always helps to write down your questions before your visit with the doctor.
Also, I noticed that there was criticism both ways. Some criticised the doctors decision making and some (belivers of the doctor) criticized the parent's opinion. I totally understand that sometimes it is truly a mistake of the doctor. To err is to human, but that is also why there is so much emphasis on good follow-up and proper patient complaince. I think a lot goes into making a medical decison and it is very induvidualized depending on each patient's condition. As a non-medical person, to critically evaluate a decison, unless you have done the research and have a scientific basis behind your opinion/argument, it is very unfair to criticize the decision or choice of treatment. However, in this case, there is no question that an MRI would give more information than a CT in evaluating a new onset seizure. (Also to clarify to one comment MRI although more expensive - it gives more information and is far more safer than a CT in which you are exposed to a lot of radiation.)
The best way to overcome this uncertainity would be to ask questions like - why, how, when, what ifs and so on, so that you are aware and well informed. This helps the care-giver and the patient to stay on the same page.
Medicine and patient care are very fragile zones and there is no room for miscommunications/ego/hatred. I hope by reading this both doctors and patients understand what we expect out of each other. With all due respect to the Doctor, the Medical fraternity owes an apology not only to this parent but to many who have had similar experiences with their doctors. Medicine is all about compassion and respect towards our patients and by doing this we are automatically respected.
My child was recently suffering of extreme case of HSV-1. He was given the best possible care by dr VV. HSV-1 is a type of virus if it is not detected properly, it is potentially life-threatening among children. dr VV recommended MRI scan and spine-puncher. We have decided to do both. spine-puncher is extremely complex procedure and that is the only way o detect the presence of HSV-1 virus. spine-puncher test results showed up positive for HSV-1 virus. He was given best possible care available at that time. We have had a very pleasant experience so far. My child is fully recovered by HSV-1 virus after 8 days of treatment in the hospital. I am simply dump-founded by the barrage of complaints about dr VV.
Hi All,
Let me also share some info with you all, i too had a child of 11 years who had passed away recently and was treated by Dr VV.
I had been seeing this Dr from 1999 and till 2005 i have not faced a single problem with him, may be in the KKCTH or in his private clinic.
he treated and encouraged both my wife and me to live with this kid for so long, My kid had CP and even after coming to HYD i was told by a specialist Dr on the same Dept that DR VV was his GURU.
Let me put this way, all the complaints i had been seeing is from 2010, and i tell u all that in 2000 yr he had 60 odd patients, may be the count is increased know, and we need to understand we are talking of 1 case history where as he has to study not less than a 60 to 70 cases,
I truly think though i lost my son, that Dr too are humans, we may have to forgive them on some occassions.pl bear with me .may be all the comments o[censored]rs are very emotional but the fact is there are many more who had good memories too.

Regards,
AKR
Hi NeoNatal Dactors,
KKTCH
Chennai,

I Feel Dactor is Noble profession and Devine profession'.But in KKCTH Neontal IntesiveCare Unit.

One Lady Dactor is there her Name is “Dr .Kalyani"(In Neo Natal ICU) if ask any questions about our baby she will give answer harsh and venomous nature of replies.

We are paying daily 10-15 thousands to save our babies. This is the way DR. KALYANI giving to answer to Parents.
1. The main lack of proper communication from hospital staff as well Dactors.
2. If Rahul Yadav is good doctor. But Kalyani is misleading the Staff (Resident Doctor’s as well nurses)
3. They are looting the money with people to prolong more days. Without any investigating.
4. Their parents will be afraid when they will stop treatment if they will ask about Discharge of Baby. (They won’t give proper response)
5. If you ask about our baby conditions directly.without dealy they will ready to dischare (they won’t mind of baby's health.is it right profession for dactor)
6. If KKTCH Neonatal Doctor’s to prove is good One. try to get Feedback from Parents(Atleat spend with parents 10 mins per day)

The general ward is more like a chatharam, and the toilets are dirty and smelly. Is this a way a children's hospitals should be maintained
I do not know this doctor but I think the doctor who started this thread should know better than to do public-bashing. (S)he talks about the public being trigger-happy about litigation. Does she realize she is putting herself in same quandary? She can be sued for libel and slander along with others who have made negative comments here. Just sit back and read what you have written. All he has done is hurt YOUR BIG FAT EGO! My advice: Swallow it. All it goes to prove is that he does not treat a doctor's kid in any special way. My response is too late, i guess. Better late than never. I just happened to see this when i searched for something else.
yes .dr.v.v is very argent person. not bea human being.
I totally agree with you as I am a mother of an Autistic child and I am one of the victim. Dr. V. V. spoke so inhuman, arrogant. harsh and rude with me. Without even knowing my child he told me that no autistic child will not co-operate for a video EEG. They are hyperactive. I pleaded with him that Iam the mother and I know my child better. Still he was shouting in front of all his assistant doctors and other paramedics that as if he is the ultimate authority.

He said that there is no recovery for your child. If you have millions go and blow all your money but you will end with zero results.. He was not only a negative speaker but also wounded a mother's hope and insulted her. He thinks he is god. Doctor"s profession is a noble profession and he sets a very bad example. That day I decided that I will recover my child and make my child talk to him about how he treated him. Hope he has changed a little bit atleast now.

He may be nice to parents who have no knowledge about medicines and there he becomes the god to them( in other words where his ego is satisfied- I pity those parents), if parents are knowledgable he get insecured and behaves rude with them.

Mother of an autistic child from Dubai, UAE
I can tell you that he saved my son's life by timely diagnosis and I know that he has been extremely polite with us and has always answered our silliest of queries and allayed our fears patiently. He has not recommend unwanted medicine or even a scan once. Not just for me. I can quote from the experience of some of my colleagues whose children are his patients as well.
All the negative comments posted here just make it appear as though each patient walking into his clinic gets shouted at and for no reason at all. I find it difficult to believe given that we have always had pleasant experience with him in every interaction.
THIS IS GNANAVEL FROM MUSCAT.

hi Dr.jayakrishnaveni
CT Scan at first visit is mandatory for any seizure disorder to rule out any structural malformation.. MRI is totally waste when CT is normal.. first u should have faith in the doctor with whom u r consulting.. doctor shopping is idiotic.. follow up is very very important in a neurological disorder..
i strongly condemn ur words ''In a democratic country like India a person has every right to choose his consultant. When I come back it is the basic duty of the consultant to treat me properly''. u have right to choose ur consultant.. but its not the duty of a consultant to treat u whenever u come back.. A DOCTOR HAS ALL RIGHTS TO REFUSE ANY PATIENT AND CAN SELECT HIS OWN UNLESS ITS LIFE SAVING.. first u know that..
Am also a pediatrician, I WOULD DEFINITELY REFUSE TO SEE ANY NEUROLOGICAL PT WITH POOR COMPLIANCE.. Being a dr, first u know medical laws and ethics.. dont unnecessarily complaint about fellow drs in a open blog like this..

hi ramsrajasekar,
no doctor will consult or discuss without seeing the patient.. reports will add on to wat we suspect and can not replace the clinical diagnosis.. if anyone discusses with out the patient and only with the reports, definitely he is an ...
To say that he was rude and cruel is putting it lightly.I don't understand how somebody who does not have the heart to listen to his patients problem can claim to be an expert doctor. He started saying horrible things to us when we reported our childs conditions to him and started saying that he has patients waiting outside. And to top it we had to pay him money after listening to all his ranting and abuse. He is the worst kind of doctor i have seen and hope to god that he pays for his mistakes.
I guess the doctor who has posted this is a perfect egoist who seems to be jealous of Dr.Viswanathan's position and fame. Dr.Viswanathan, as I seem to know from my consultations for my son, is a well-mannered, soft-natured and sensible person. Sudheer and a couple of others have perceived him correctly. I wonder if all the other comments here have been logged by the person who opened this discussion under different names, in a fit of rage to disgrace him. Dr.V never advises MRI or CT scan or any invasive diagnosis for children as he strongly feels it is wrong and unwanted. He is so very friendly with kids and makes them and the parents feel at home, first of all. He is patient enough to answer all our questions, whether or not we make sense. Unfortunately, parents today, are making doctors' situation pathetic by complaining of anything and everything. If a doctor treats conservatively, they raise questions as to why the newer disgnosis and treatments were not advised and call him not enough knowledgable. This they do with their half-baked knowledge of medicinal nuances. If the doc prescribes newer disgnosis and treatments, they accuse him of money-mindedness and non-compassionate! Poor docs. We dont trust them and call them ill-mannered.

So, please dont take decisions of whether to consult a doc or not by what people write here. We dont know what this doc did to enrage him!
I am not sure. I went to this doctor recommended by relatives and friends, found him a bit too slick and quick to jump into conclusions. I am not too sure if he is all that great as made out to be, did not find him to be the monster that a few have found him for sure but not that great a doctor either. The kind of stuff that he is dealing with PDD etc how can a person come to a conclusion in 15 minutes, he has to be god not a mere doctor..!
My Wife took my son to this doc for consultation, after consultation my wife started crying over the phone saying the doctor is shouting her for no reason!!! I didn't trusted her saying "how come Dr will shout at you for no reason? you might have did/told something wrong which made Dr angry" but she said several time to trust her, I was in confusion, finally she forwarded this link to me and I was shocked to learn there was so much complaint on him, oh my god, he is not fit to be a doctor, some higher escalation to health minister (government) is needed. Somebody needs to bell the cat!! To put it in the trap !!
Thanks for letting me know about this doctor. I was referred by my son's school to go to this doctor. But now I m changed. I wont go to this doctor.
Dear all, Please leave this negative comments. we want our children back with normal condition. from my point of view he is good doctor. i was gone with my daughter for some abnormal issues in his sleeping. previously i went to MIOT. After taking MRI & EEG in MIOT doctor cant able to tell the solution. finally i went to Dr. VV with MIOT report. He handle my daughter & his issue smoothly & give some exercise and a tablets. he is an experience Dr. for pediatric Neurology. Once again from my side he is an good Dr.
he is not a human being.he is not a doctor. he should be given life sentece for what he is doing with his patients.Today i went to him with my 10 year old grand daughter, i can not describe is behaviour, his attitude in words. he is a monster. He has no knowlegee also please keep your child away from this dangerous doctor. i think in the line of suing him if other patients come forward
