KANCHI KAMAKOTI CHILD TRUST HOSPITAL NEONATAL WARD

Lack of good doctors
Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital Neonatal Ward for Newborns (NICU) : Many leading doctors have left the department over a span of 4-5 years, at least 8 senior doctors / HODs left. So, now diagnosis, patient care, nature of treatment all are affected. My niece was there for 25 days in NICU and was misdiagnosed to have brainfever and urinary infection, and many strong antibiotics were given. Later we found it be dehydration fever. We also observed that many patients stayed for long in the NICU, but later got opinions from other hospitals like Soorya, Mehta, Ramachandra etc where diagnosis or treatment changed and babies got better. It is said that frequent change of senior doctors in NICU has affected care there. I was reminded of this when I read about how reputation of AIIMS has been affected by attrition there. It is sad that Child Trust neonatal ward, formerly a place of excellence is affected thus.

Medical negligence(Operated with no anesthesia)
Hi, I am Sathya from chennai. I admitted my wife at Bharani Hospital, Saligramam, Chennai, on 12/03/09 for pregnancy cesarean operation. It was scheduled on 13/03/09 morning 7.30am as advised by our regular check-up doctor N.Mangaleswari (MD DGO). On 13/03/09, at 7.15am my wife was taken into the operation theatre. Earlier we requested the doctor not to give Spinal Anesthesia as she will not be able to walk soon after that. Doctor agreed for that. But in the operation theatre, she gave only very light oral anesthesia, but did not check with my wife whether she has become unconsious or not. They tied her two hands on both sides of the operation table. The oral anesthesia Mask was on her nose.

Now the Cruel Operation started. My wife felt all the pains right from scratching her stomach with the knife, opening the stomach by Doctor's hands, squeezing the womb and taking out the child, stitching the womb, then family planning operation, stitching there, then closing the stomach and stitching outside...She tried to wave her hands as she could not shout, one of the doctors has told that she was feeling the pain, but other doctors neglected his words and continued the operation. I donot what kind of Doctors they are. Also they were talking their personal issues while operating on my wife..

She came out of the operation theatre at around 8.30 with full conscious. This can only be possible if they had given insufficient anesthesia. I have heard that some people had gone to "COMA" stages also bcoz of this low anesthesia problems. My wife is struggling with pain even now also. We donot know with whom we should lodge the complaint. Hence sending it to you, thinking that some justice will come and some good things will happen to other people atleast.

The second one was the Paedeatrician Dr.Asokan told that our child was born with low sugar and has low pulse rate while crying. He directed the child alone to child trust hospital and he was kept there in ICU for 1 week. But while travelling to child trust itself, my child's sugar came to normal. I saw other people's kids who were being kept there for more than 15 days and a month also for silly reasons.
When i checked with my local peadeatrician nearby my home, he scolded me for having chosen these two hospitals. He also told that no child will be born with low sugar. Only for money purpose this has been done. Dr.Asokan is also a visiting doctor at Child trust as well as Bharani.

Pls. take up this complaint very strongly and pls. get me justice for this mis-behaviours by these money minded Doctors.

Rgds

I am a doctor myself. Do not know about present status of Child Trust. But 5years back my brother had a premature baby . At that time the care was very good, and the baby born 4 months before due date is doing very well now. But it looks like most famous and good doctors have left Child Trust. To name a few, my mentors Dr Nammalwar, Shanmugasundaram, Baskar Raju, Sarala Rajajee, Prasad are best doctors in the field no longer at Child Trust. To me as a doctor, the physician treating my child is more important than the hospital. Now I would choose a different newborn unit after enquiries in the city.

Dear Sathya, Next delivery, choose DR UMA RAM at Seethapathy Hospital, very good doctor and hospital. But you may request her to avoid sending the baby to Child Trust Hospital and choose any NICU you want. We look to our obstetricians for guidance about treatment of baby, and they are duty-bound to study carefully and know which hospital and doctor to send the newborn baby to.

I was referred by Dr Subramaniam of Isabel Hospital for care of the premature baby to Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital newborn neonatal unit NICU. I was very disappointed. When baby in my family was put on breathing machine for weak lungs, we were not informed. Suddenly, pharmacy gave a bill of nearly Rs 13000 to me. We were told that powerful injection called surfactant was used to make lungs grow. This was shocking as Doctors did not tell of this (despite our family being doctors relatives). Duty doctors kept telling contradictory things. Baby got infection due to lack of hygiene in hospital, We were not informed. Suddenly, pharmacy gave me bill for Rs 6000 and I bought meropenem and vancocin etc.I also found other parents having similar grievances. Dr Ganesh near my house at Triplicane, told me that other patients have told him this also, and that lack of supervision by new doctors not knowing language has caused chaos, decline in quality. He told me that if I had asked him before, he would referred to some other units like Sooriya Hospital or Mehta Hospital, where former HODs of Child Trust Hospital Dr Deepa Hariharan, Dr ShanmugaSundaram work.

We took our 1 and half year son to this child trust hospital last week early morning for breathing problem. My son had severe cold and flump formed in chest due to that. He was also having severe nose block and i heard him snoring a day before. On the day of heavy breathing (we thought it was wheezing), we went to this hospital early morning and took to emergency care center there.

He was diagnosed with x-ray and duty doctor early morning recommended asthalin with oxygen mask to him since he was breathing so fast. My son slept silently with mask and whenever he wakes up, he cries and wanted to avoid mask.

Each time when he cried, he started breathing little faster and on seeing this doctor said he need to be admitted to hospital and gave us a long list of prescription to buy from their inhouse pharmacy.

Now this 1-1/2 year child was advised to have saline trips immediately. We could not understand why this was. The child was active, healthy and had good dinner the night before and he was not tired at all, resisting with hands for masks given to him. We could not understand why he was asked to give saline trips.
My son screamed when his nerves are punctured for having saline plugs in his hand. Also blood was taken out thru injection from his wrist for doing a blood test.

It dawned and still my son had no improvement in his condition. We felt all those apprentice new doctors are not at all knowledgeable to give treatment and so we decide to take him to his regular pediatrician who treats him. All these time, my son was not given any treatment except for asthalin mask. Not even any injection or tablet to make him breathe little slower.

We took my son to this child trust hospital only because it was night and no other hospital would be open at that time. The doctors were reluctant to discharge my son and threatened saying he is not normal, his oxygen level in blood is too low, you are risking his life and needs to be admitted atleast a week there with o2 mask with him.

They delayed his discharge saying blood test report will come late. I said its ok i will collect it later and got my son discharged. For this 5 hour admittance to this hospital, i was charged around 3000 rs including medicines, xray and blood test.

My son became normal as soon as we left the hospital and was playing in car on the way to other nursing home. On seeing his condition, his regular doctor said its just normal cold and usual chest flump that could be treated with syrups. He gave a injection shot and adviced to take same injection for 3 days as out patient and sent us home. He also prescribed 2 syrups to be taken and thats all. We returned home and within hours of that injection my son was breathing normal.

Now in 2 days he was completely recovered and even symptoms of cold has reduced. We all have decided at any cost we should not go to this hospital for any kind of treatments. We cant imagine our son admitted for a week in that child trust hospital with masks which he fears about.

Now in our apartment, we heard another story of another child who was taken to same hospital and treated there for 15 days and they said this hospital has to be sued for having incompetent doctors.
I strongly disagree the comments passed on Childs Trust New Team, as they are very much competent and effective in managing cases.
The outcome of each case depends on the individual severity of the disease, not just hospital staff and medicines. I request the educated parents and some doctors not to make silly comments on the negative outcomes happend in this hospital. If you are generous then do an impartial detailed scientific knowledge based workup to find out whats the cause for mortality or disablity of your children/baby whatsoever happened in this hospital.

And my dear, Sathyanarayanan.V [protected], newborn babies who are born to Diabetc mothers are prone to develop Hypoglycemia. You made this silly comment " When i checked with my local peadeatrician nearby my home, he scolded me for having chosen these two hospitals. He also told that no child will be born with low sugar. Only for money purpose this has been done". In this regard you are an illiterate and your doctor near your home is an , ask him to read the chapter of Neonatal Hypoglycemia and give the exam and then restart his practising.

Dear all parents, kindly note DEATH OF YOUR BABY IS NOT EQUIVALENT TO INEFFICIENCY OF CARE.

Thanks all
Dr Vamshidhar
Sr Pediatrician, HYD.
