[Resolved]  Shalby Hospital Ahmedabad — negligence of doctors and staff

Address:Gujarat

I would like to inform you the treatment we have received from Shailby Hospitals and Dr Shah in relation to my Father, Late Mr. Kulbir Singh, who took the treatment at Shailby Hospitals from 20th Nov 2009 to 1st Jan 2010 and passed away on 1st Jan 2010. He was a retired Chief Engineer (Production) and served in ONGC for 38 years. After his retirement in 2003, his health started to deteriorate and was treated by Dr. Shah for several years. He was hospitalised for more than 15 times (several times at SAL Hospital and later in Shalby Hospitals).
On 20th Nov 2009, he complained of breathlessness for which he was taken to the Shailby. Hospitals, as per suggested by Dr. Shah(kidney foundation) He was admitted under Dr. Saxena, who at the time of the admission told us that he required only 4 hours of treatment, which was extended to 41 days. After 7 days of his treatment, he was shifted to the ICU due to a mild convulsion attack. It was astonishing to see the behaviour of Dr. Shah, who after being requested for several times, did not show up to see the patient. His behaviour prior to this situation was alarming as well as he had behaved very rudely several times and at times, even refused to treat the patient. Since he knew the history of the patient from the beginning of his treatment, we could not replace him. After requesting him for several times, he showed up only twice in the span of 41 days of my Father’s hospitalisation. He complained that we should have admitted the patient to the SAL Hospital instead and hence verbally refused to see the patient, though he is on SAL Hospital’s panel and is treating other patients. My Father required dialysis several times but it was delayed by Dr. Shah, which in the end led to his liver failure and resulted in his death. His behaviour was very discourteous when he visited the hospital to check on my Father’s condition and even verbally refused to treat him. He even called the case “impossible” even though my Father was still alive. He gave an excuse that he will not be in town for the next 5 days as he was going out of station but was seen treating other patients in the same hospital many times which in turn gave us no other option but to replace him with other nephrologist (it was too late by then though). We have never done anything wrong to Dr. Shah in the past and have always given respect to him and his profession by not interfering in his work. I cannot challenge his professional capability but I certainly can challenge his moral responsibilities and the oath he had taken while taking up such a profession.
I also want to inform you about the negligence of the Doctors at Shailby Hospitals (which I believe is also one of the reasons of my Father’s death). My Father was admitted in the ICU for 33 days under Dr. saxena(General Physician). We believe that every time in the past when my Father was admitted, he was given a temporary treatment by the Doctors. He was never being referred to a Pulmonologist, though his problem was related to Lungs (CO2 retention) which led to multiple convulsions. The hospital did not have a specialist pulmonologist and was reluctant to let us find and get one from outside. In many occasions, we caught the nursing staff and Medical officer’s negligence, for example, heart beat rising above 170 (above 220 results in heart failure) and when we informed the Medical Officer, he was more keen in playing computer games than treating the patient, the nursing staff was caught sleeping at night in ICU but no action was taken against them by the management. After many such incidents, we spoke to the management about allowing one person to be with the patient or allowing us to check on our patient every 2 hours but no action was taken. My Father had Tracheoscomy done through which the ventilator was inserted in his throat, resulting in loss of vocal cord, his hands were tied and he was fully conscious, hence it was necessary for someone to be with him all the time to monitor him in case of his medical and non medical needs. The Medical Officers in the ICU admitted that they had shortage of nursing staff and could not manage a designated nurse for such critical patients. When asked for a designated nurse for our patient, the Medical Officers (Dr. Bhaveen Sheth and Dr. Tejas) were offensive and asked us to shift our patient to “Nursing Home” if we needed such treatment. We wanted to shift our patient to other hospital but it was too late by then. The cause of death as per the death summary is “Chronic Liver Failure” but looking at his previous medical reports, his liver showed no cause of worry, hence it shows that the liver damage was done while he was being treated and was not a chronic problem. It is highly disappointing that the hospital charges so much money to the organisation like ONGC and even then, the patients are treated in such a negligent and ruthless manner.
I have lost my Father and he will never return but the cause of writing this letter is to alarm you that such Doctors and Hospitals are still on the ONGC panel, made a bill of 15 Lac in our case. The organisation is paying them a lot of money and if the employees are still not satisfied with the treatment then such incompetent Doctors and Hospitals should be immediately removed from the panel. The Doctors didnt even bothered to send us the Condolence message , infact used abusive words after they got to know that we want to fight against them. Its rediculous, they r non-humans.

Kindly request you to think twice in taking decision..
Nowadays hospitals believe in profiteering even at the cost of life. There
is no trasparency and they put people on ventilator to make more n more money. Very careless attitude of doctors, nurses and other staff.
Again warning you against such malpractices.
