Nandi Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Road — safety concern nice road right lane misuse & overtaking hazard

Dear NICE Road Management Team,
I am writing to raise a serious safety concern regarding lane discipline on NICE Road, particularly on the stretch between Hosur Road and Tumkur Road junctions.
On March 23, 2025, at approximately 8:30 PM, while traveling towards Tumkur, I encountered a common yet highly dangerous situation. A heavy truck was blocking the right lane, forcing me to overtake from the left due to a lack of any other viable option. This posed an immediate safety risk, as overtaking on the left significantly reduces visibility, increasing the chances of collisions.
Hazards of Left-Side Overtaking:
- Limited Visibility – Slow-moving trucks obstruct sightlines, preventing drivers from assessing road conditions ahead.
- Violation of Road Discipline – As per Indian road regulations, slow-moving vehicles should always stay in the left lane, keeping the right lane clear for overtaking.
- Risk of Sudden Lane Shifts – Vehicles unexpectedly moving from the right lane to the left cause dangerous lane-cutting scenarios, increasing accident probability.

Legal Framework Supporting Lane Discipline:
- Section 118 of The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 mandates proper lane discipline and overtaking rules.
- As per Rule 2.7 of the Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines, slow-moving heavy vehicles are expected to keep left, allowing smooth and safe overtaking from the right.
- Improper lane usage is subject to penalties under Section 177 of The Motor Vehicles Act, given it violates safety norms.

This issue is a persistent concern, not just isolated to my experience. While I understand that traffic congestion is inevitable, the problem here is driver behavior, particularly heavy vehicles occupying the right lane and forcing illegal overtaking maneuvers.
Request for Action:
I urge the NICE Road authorities to:
- Enforce Strict Lane Discipline – Implement traffic monitoring and educate drivers on proper lane usage.
- Install Clear Signage – Reinforce rules by placing lane usage instructions at key entry points.
- Deploy Traffic Marshals or Automated Alerts – Using camera-based monitoring to issue warnings or fines for right-lane violations.

As a regular user of NICE Road, I request urgent attention to this matter for the safety of all travelers. Looking forward to your response and action plan.
