[Resolved]  Baby Memorial Hospital — Very poor service at Baby Memorial hopsital

Very bad service at Baby Memorial Hospital, Calicut
Hi,

My father is admitted due to illness at Baby Memorial Hospital, Calicut, Kerala, India. This is from teh experience of him.

He was asked to pay an advance amount at teh time of admission! A patient coming with some pain or illness need to pay first! Then he was taken to room, a place where 100s of people live together. Some were having serious illness, some having spreading Chikkun Gunia fever etc. And my father asked for a better independednt room, but authorities said that all rooms are full and patients who have even serious illness tahn him are waiting to get a room.As my father is a very honest and humble person, he agreed with the unclean, congested general ward!

Then comes teh next headache!
I have taken parental insurance policy for my dependent parents. I thought it would be helpful to them incas of any hospitalisation when I am not around.

But it has become a headache to my parents now. During my father was there at Baby Memorial Hopsital, he was asked to pay some advance, room charges and all the medicine charges even if he is insured, and was carrying the insurance certificatre with him. What is the need of an insurance if the patients are asked to pay everything, and more over some advance amount too because he is insured! This treatment was at Baby Memorial hospital Calicut, and teh hospital authorities were non coperative withe the patient and the by stander.

Patient was asked to wait 6 hours after discharging from the room. They explained that they are waiting for a reply from ICICI Lombard to get the bills claimed. They explained that tehy have to get soem advance amount from patient because they are not sure if they get all the bills claimed!!! He was asked to wait the whole day at the reception, and even after that they gave a reply that they are still waiting! Atlast my parents had to decide to go home . My father was so tired by that time, due to illness and the strain given by the hospital authorites.
Just imagine, this is the situation of a dependednt parent when his/her children are not around to help them!

He demanded to speak with any of the executives, and he was sent to HR executive. A lady who was not all suitable for that chair! She did not even listen to my father and brother, and sent to some other person.

My brother just read the form which tehy sent to ICICI Lombard, and saw that they have put 10000 rupees including Deluxe Ac room rent!!! My father was admitted in a congested room with no place to turn around, and the hospital authorities are refunding from Insurance around 5 times of the amount which was spent by father. Anyways, it was too late for my father to stay at hospital just waiting for a reply, and he decided to go home. No consideration was given by Baby Memorial hospital to a old person who was sick, and they made money out of his illness!!! Moreover I have to pay the insurance premium, and the lkimit will be reduced by whatever amount this hopsital is making out of it!

I am really fed up of this, and i suggest nobody go to Baby Memorial Hospital, Calicut!

Yes, Very very poor service is provided by Baby Memorial hospital I had the similar experience.. They take a lot of time to reply for something! Customer care is too poor, and patients are asked to pay advance before admission! They have to appoint some approachable persons at HR department and insurance department!
I agree with this. I had teh same experience like this! They take too much time to get it reimbursed from insurance company, and tehy ask patients to pay in advace! What a pathetic service! Nobody there was approachable regarding this matter.
Baby Memorial hospital, Calicut 'WAS' considered to be one of the best. But now a days it has lost its honesty and customer care. It is high time that they post caring and approachable staf[censored] Doctors are ok, but patients need care and attention from non- medical staff as well. Like billing, nsurance and customer care sections are very poor. They dont even listen to patients. They take hours to respond for a query. Patients will not be harassed like this!
I too agree that Baby Memorial Hospital is no more a good choice for patients in Calicut. We have similar experience regarding billing after discharge as my mom was in insured. They have to seriously look in to this matter and take some steps towards it, for saving customer satisfaction.
My brother also faced same hospital. the lady sitting in re-imp section is not good. She doesnt know how to behave
I also agree with this.Hospital autority must change their attitude towards patients.
This is true. Nowa days hospital is a mafia ruled by Businessman. They dont know how anything. Ultimately they want money. They never understand the feeling of a patient. Insurance policy also a big trap. They want profit. So they wont mind the patients and their problems. Hospitals will try to collect maximum amount from policy. and insurence company will try maximum not to give money. So its a battle . In between all headache and money loss with patients. Govt is not taking action against them. Its very difficult to survive poor people in this world.
i agree with the complaint. once my friend had a cut on his forehead at midnight and was taken there. well we had to wait sometime as we were told there was serious case to attend. we waited and the suturing was done. now was the time to pay the bills... the nurse in the casualty gave a bill of rs. 1200 as doctors fee. when i enquired they said there were '15 stitches, on a 1 inch cut'. ok... i went to pay the bill... there i was asked to pay an extra rs. 500 as suturing charges. now when i went back to the ward i was again given a bill for the list of medicines and stuff and was told to replace them... the grand total for a 1 inch stitch... rs. 2400... its a pity that hospitals exploit the situation... medical insurance there is something different... that sucks too...
Guys,
I need to share the traumatic experience I had with this so-called hospital almost a decade ago...

I got admitted with high fever and chest infection while I was on audit tour from Chennai. I was treated for typhoid fever and was administered with Ceftriaxone Sodium through intra-vein. (a pencillin derivative). I didn't remember all the physicians but one of them was Dr. Alexander (who was the wrecker-in-chief)

After 3 days of admission, I was discharged with advice to continue the injection as outpatient for 3 more days. The same night at my lodge room (where I was staying), I suffered rashes all over my body and redness of eyes and rushed back to Hospital..

The doctors administered some anti-allergic but of no avail.. the damage has already been done.

My entire body had become scarred due to the allergy and it took almost 7 long years of continuous skin treatment to completely cure the same not to mention the costs involved.

My father, at the age of 68, then had to rush to Kozhikode all the way from Chennai to escort me back..

The most killing incident of them all was an idiotic skin specialist (I will slap him if I happen to see him again) displaying me as an exhibit to his medical students and explaining the adverse effects of skin allergy. Probably I was tested as a guinea pig by this honorable hospital..

Such has been the trauma, that even today I dread of entering into an hospital in Kerala ever again.
Well, it is easy to complain, but I am dead sure if you compare the overall statistics there would be more than 90% who have only good to say about Baby Memorial Hospital.

To be honest, it was only after working abroad I understood how hard it is to cater to our people. We have a long tongue to complain but seldom use the same to appreciate.

It is a universal truth that one can never put all patients in the same scale.
I am happy to hear that Baby Memorial Hospital authorities took first step to avoid such complaints in future because of the complaints posted in this forum. I suggest to conduct seminars on humanity and spiritually for those who are working(servicing) medical field. i wish you all the best for the BABY HOSPITAL and make sure such incident will never report again.
Hello Mr. Susan John,
Please bear in mind the fact that only 10-15% of the people who have a bad experience really bother to complain and the rest just keep quiet. Silence doesnt always mean satisfaction.

I am amused as to how you are dead sure defending the hospital and at a loss to understand the veracity of your "overall statistics" (if you have really compiled them).

Please be a little bit emphathetic and understand that complaints posted by people are a summary of their sufferings.

You have the liberty to admit that you have a long tongue but please don't include others.
I can complain about bad roads in India or bad service in a hotel or a wrong decision of a person or network problem of BSNL. But remember dear suzan...complaint against a hospital is entirely different. if the complaint is from a patient then its a serious issue . Hospitals are not a place for making money or its not a place to conduct experiments on human beings or testing a new medicine. We need good service oriented dedicated doctors especially staffs for hospitals. How many o[censored]s aware of this forum?? how many o[censored]s will post complaints ???Onley few..Others keeping quiet. I request you to visit "satya sai hospital " in Bangalore. i am surprised that there is NO CASH COUNTER. Everything is free..and dedicated service to patients

That doesn't mean Hospitals are good if and only if there is no cash counter.they can take money But dont return unhappiness and sorrows.
what can the hospital do if it does not have rooms?
if the hospital is not getting proper reply from insurance company...where will they collect the money from?

dont understand this attitude that all other companies in other fileds can do anything to make a profit
but hospital industry alobne is expected to be not thinkinjg of profit

it is not money alone////but without money hospitals and services cannot run
it is just like any other company
here in this part dont know why but every patient is very apprehensive

dont cooperrate with docs for treatment plans

suspect if tests are done

the attitude has to change

some need immediate attention some need to wait
but here no concern for others even if dying
hard to deal with bystanders
I believe the root of all problems is the capitation fees levied by Medical Colleges.

Everyone who wants to be a doctor pays up a lot of money and they have to reimburse that to repay the loans. Therefore when they go to work for hospitals, they charge exhorbitant salaries. Now these salaries has to be met by the hospital to have highly skilled doctors on board as there is a mad scramble to have the best of the lot by paying any amount of cash.

Now it is time for the hospital that has high overheads to reimburse it from the patients. Sometimes when they feel that they are not able to make ends meet then they start hiring people at a low salary for the unskilled labor - such as receptionist, cashier, attendant etc. They are not able to make ends meet with their low salary and take out their frustration on the patients and those they encounter at work.

It becomes a vicious circle.
50% of problems can be solved by love and care towards the patients from doctors and hospital staffs. 50% goes to treatment and medicine. So staffs need training, seminars and workshops on that. There is a communication gap between patients and staffs also.
All hospital authorities must take seriously this as feedback and improve their service.
The hospital authorities should leave no stone unturned to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future. The hospital having some of the best doctors in each department is the leading one in calicut. That is why the counters are busy all the time. Some of my friends whose wives were admitted for delivery also complain that the hapless women did not get a fine treatment in tune with the bill they paid for the service, at the labor room of the hospital .
hi,
its painful to read such an argument...but at the same time just put urself in that position of running a hospital.they need to cater to all be it poor or rich..they need to have policies which they will follow and similar policies which the patients side will have to.
so thats nothing we can do much about.
and for gen info. for all this is happening in many hospitals.not only in Kerala but also elsewhere.
more than that its more of the insurance company's mistake than hospital.they promise something and do something totally different..
