In a rare case, three imported puppies have landed a mother-son duo in jail. The Bandra railway police have arrested a Naigaon-based mother-son duo for ordering three imported puppies and cheating a Haryana-based dog dealer of Rs66, 500.

“We have arrested Sarbajeet Rakesheswar Ahuja, 42 and her son, Gaurav, for criminal breach of trust and cheating on Tuesday night from their Naigaon house in Thane district. They have been remanded in police custody till April 25 by the Mumbai Central Railway court on Wednesday, ” said senior police inspector Rajeev Sawant, Bandra railway police station. He added that the police also recovered three imported puppies (a male Labrador as well a male and female St. Bernard) from their house.

During preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the Ahuja family, originally from Chandigarh, was settled in Naigaon. Sarbajeet was a housewife while her husband Rakeshwar was real estate agent and her son Gaurav was running a mobile repair shop at Naigaon.

Ashish Gulati, a Haryana-based dog dealer, supplies imported and Indian puppies across India. He was contacted by Gaurav Ahuja on February 15, who inquired about importing three puppies.

Gulati agreed to supply three puppies for Rs71, 500 and later gave Gaurav his bank account number to deposit cash before delivery of puppies. Gaurav deposited Rs5000 and promised to pay the dealer the balance amount after receiving the delivery of puppies at Mumbai.

Accordingly, Gulati sent the puppies along with his delivery boy, Ankush Kumar on February 18 by Paschim Express and the train reached Bandra Terminus on February 19 around 3pm.

After alighting at Bandra Terminus, Ankush took the puppies from the railway parcel office and handed them to Gaurav, who was accompanied by his mother. When Ankush asked for the balance payment, Sarbajeet promised to give him the balance after withdrawing cash from an ATM.

Leaving Gaurav with three puppies at Bandra, she asked Ankush to accompany her to Mumbai Central Terminus where she vanished. Realising that he had been cheated, Ankush tried to contact Gaurav on his mobile which was switched off. Ankush then contacted his boss, who asked him to lodge a police complaint.

“After the complaint was filed, we traced Gaurav’s mobile tower location. We then collected his address from the mobile service provider and conducted a raid on their house at Naigaon, ” said Sawant.
