HTC Wildfire — flimsy product

I brought a wildfire on monday, on sunday of the same week I was forced to brake suddenly, the phone slides out of my handbag falls to the car floor, may be 20cm, and my screen cracks. When I brought the phone no protective gear was available at any of the stores to purchase.I called HTC they tell me to take it back to Telstra to fill a report before they can deal with the problem and Telstra wants to charge me to make such a report.Me I think its bad marketing from both HTC and Telstra to launch such a flimsy and fradgile phone with no protective gear. I can't see why I have to pay to get the phone repaired HTC should be producing phones that are slightly shock proof.
