[Resolved]  Nokia E 51 — manufacturing defect

I have an E 51 that is around 11/2 years old. It has been connected to a PC using the USB cable precisely thrice since it was bought. Last time I connected, which was 2 days back, I was stunned to see the USB pin from within the phone coming out with the cable! It appears to be a manufacturing defect as nothing appears broken, but the pin within the USB connector does not appear to have been soldered well and has come out completely. The phone has not been dropped or mishandled in any way.

I am sure if I approach a service center, I am going to be charged for repair now that it is out of warranty. While I have no issues paying for it, this appears to be a manufacturing defect I approached Nokia and the consumer center executive could not even understand the problem! Given below is the reply. Here is yet another company that does not want to own up its manufacturing defect, but make the consumer pay for it. This is the service for a high-end handset purchaser!

nokia e 51 — Defective model

This is to inform everyone that i feel i have been cheated by the famous Nokia company. I bought a new Nokia E51 model onn 15th August 2008, and within one day i found out that the mike of the handset does not work. The shop from where i bought which is mobile store in changannassery in Kerala refused to replace the model. It is indeed a sad day for people like me who trusted NOkia.

Nokia E 51 — WLAN not getting connected even after giving it thrice for repair in one months time within warranty

I brought Nokia E 51 on 20th of Nov.2008.My wireless lan though it was detecting but would not connect. I have given the mobile thrice in one months time and Nokia service centre kept it for almost 16 days at stretch saying they have to to send it to Delhi for repairs has still not been repaired now what is to be done i don, t know. After buying a high end model if these kind of problems persists then i think Nokia should label their phones as USE AND THROW> NO WARRANTY>

nokia e 51 — Screen going blank

I bought a Nokia phone MODEL – E 51 in Delhi from a Karol Bagh dealer in November 2008. Yesterday, 22nd September, 2009 the screen suddenly went blank. I could receive calls, but couldn't make out who was calling. Neither could I make calls. So, today I took the phone to Nokia Care at Rajkumar, Andheri West.

After waiting in a queue for half an hour, the first attendant looked at the bill and the phone and started registering the complaint. He said they could attend to the problem in a couple of hours. But then, the second attendant intervened and asked what the problem was and after check the bill, pushed back the phone saying the bill was not valid as it did not have a TIN or VAT number. Therefore, they couldn’t service the phone. I debated the issue with him and asked him how a consumer was supposed to know that if they bought the phone from a shop which didn’t have a TIN or VAT number, the phone wouldn’t be entitled to service within the warranty period. I asked him as to whether (1) it meant that the purchase was illegal or (2) the phone was not genuine or (3) it was not entitled to any service despite it being under warranty. I even called the dealer in Delhi and asked the service centre representative to talk to him, but he refused.
He then opened the phone to check and confirmed it was a genuine piece.

During the talk he said that he could check the IMEI number in his system, and if the number was there, he wouldn’t require a bill. But their system had been down since the past three hours and couldn't do so. He promised to call when the system restarted, but he never did so.

I wish to know - if he could check the purchase date from his own system, without the bill, by checking the IMEI number in his system, why did he refuse to attend to the phone in the first place. He could have told me to wait till his system restarted.

I even volunteered to pay for the repair in case the purchase was not genuine, but he wouldn’t hear me. He said he had to formally register the complaint before he could attend to the phone.

Why should the consumer be punished for a problem with their system? Doesn’t the Nokia Care centre have the courtesy to call and inform as to when we could come to get the phone repaired? The impression I got was that he didn't want to attend to the phone for reasons best known to him and created a flimsy ground i.e. problem with the bill.

I plan to visit him again tomorrow, but in case anyone can assist me and let me know what to do, I would be grateful.

Nokia E 51 — Screen going blank within the warranty period

Today, I visited the Nokia care centre at Rajkumar, Andheri West, once again regarding the E 51 screen going blank.

I was told by the representative that yesterday, 23rd September, 2009 their system did not start, so he did not call. He would check once again today and will call if the system starts working. On asking he replied “I will call only if the system starts working, otherwise no.” he said.

And what if it does not start today, what if it starts after ten days, would he call?

He replied “No, it is only for today. I cannot keep it in mind that long.”

And calling on his Phone:[protected] / 26792283 gets no response.

What is a consumer supposed to do in such a case?

Can someone suggest as to what should be done?

Thanks.

I will never buy any Nokia handset in my life again and will not go to Nokia Care Centre again.
Menu, call pick and digit 1, stopped working, I suppose. Then sometimes the handset starts working erratically. If I am right, then its a common problem with Nokia E series phones. This is what happened with my E 51, and this is what happened with my friend's E 71.
