Citibank — Credit card payment

Address:Mumbai City, Maharashtra, 400072
Website:www.citibank.co.in

I am old customer of Citibank using various products of Citibank including Credit Card. This month on 3rd of February, I made credit card payment via cheque. The cheque got rejected by Citibank saying Amount in figures and words do not match. I thought, I might have done some mistake while writing figure in words, so I issued another cheque on 5th which was also rejected by Citibank. I called up Citibank to enquire the proper reason and I came to know that the format which I am using to write figures in words is not acceptable by Citibank. The amount was Rs. 49611/- which I have written in words like "Four Nine Six One One Only". I am issuing the cheque in same fashion since I started writing cheques and my cheque was never rejected by any financial institution including Citibank. I have furnished the proof to Citibank that even in month of November 2015, I have issued the cheque in same format and it was accepted by Citibank. Even I have given cheques in Decemeber and January months with the same format but I do not have a copy of those. I requested Citibank to provide me the rule or notice from RBI saying that this format is not acceptable. They do not have any such document. They took 9 working days to come back to me with empty hands. Also they promised me call back but never got any call from them. I had to follow with them with the status. Today I received the call from Citibank where Citibank customer service manager told me that they dont have any written document about the same and insisted me to write the cheque in different manner. I told them that I had to visit the ATM couple of times to drop the cheque which costed me time and money. Also I have gone through lot of mental torture during this period. Because of this incident my credit rating also will be affected and impact my eligibility while borrowing loan. Citibank has given me compensation of Rs. 5000/- for all this matter which is not at all adequate. But I accepted it as they said its the best they can give me.

Now I would like to know has RBI any rule saying that amount in words should be in lakh, thousand, hundred, ten format e.g. Rs. 49611 (in words "Forty Nine Thousand Six Hundred Eleven Only") or I can write word for every digit in the amount for e.g. Rs. 49611/- (in words "Four Nine Six One One Only").

If I am not at fault, I would like Citibank should give me written apology and reconsider the compensation they have offered to me.

I have not got any rule book saying the format is not allowed. The CITIBANK has given me compensation of Rs. 5000 which is very very less for the mental trauma I have gone through for the resolution of the issue without my mistake. Also the precious time of mine and expenses I have incurred in following up. Also they warned me that, if I give the cheque in the same format, it will be rejected. I am amused by their statement and thinking whether CITIBANK makes the rules in India or the RBI and Govt. of India.
