[Resolved]  Chingu — Deceiving Ignorant Tourists

My husband and I went to Manali for our honeymoon. Out of curiosity we bought something called "Chingu".

The Chingu is a quilt kinda thing. It wasn’t for sale. It was for lease. The cost was 7K; after a period of 21 months, a person from their side will supposedly come and collect the chingu from you after paying you 9K...! And why so? Because Meneka Gandhi has banned the furnaces that were earlier used to heat the chingu stuff to make out shawls from it… 1 chingu once heated expands to make 5-6 shawls each of which sells for around 20-30K. Now human body is the best furnace in the world as claimed by them! Moreover in order to lure the customers they are offering a lot of free products as gift such as bed sheets, angora shawl, carpet, dress materials etc. After 21 months you return the chingu but can keep the gifts all for yourself!

We paid them 2K (1K as advance + 1K for membership). We were told that the products will come to us in Chennai by VPP.

After returning to Chennai we've had certain suspicions about the authenticity of this entire thing. Except for the present contact no. of the dealer in Manali & a receipt provided by him, we dont have any other document of authenticity. We searched online for any previous customers or their experience but found none. We would like you to help us by sharing with us any information that you have on this matter. The VPP is on its way and on receiving it we are expected to pay another 5K.

Incase we've made a blunder in buying this product we would atleast console ourselves with the fact that we've lost 2K but are saved from paying the remaining 5K. Also we would be able to save other ignorant tourists from making such a costly mistake.

Guys we have been cheated. Please advise all your friends not to buy chingu when they go to himachal. The story written by Abhilasha is the same thing that happened to me. After serching on the internet i found this article
http://bheegibilli.net/2008/11/03/did-you-see-chingu-in-himachal/

Guys we should definately complaint about this .
hi
You are absolutely right, this is complete blunder. But unfortunately we hadn't read your comment earlier. I also wnt Manali this year April, 2009 and we got to buy Chingoo by it's attractive schemes and advertisement.
The shopkeeper told us that we would be getting a gift every year on October 2nd and when we followed up with the guy he denied and said it's draw scheme and whose coupun is selected only gets the gift.

This is totaly fraud that these sales giys are doing with the customer on the name of Jammu Govt.
I have purchased the above talked about chingu from patnitop in sept'09. I do not know about the scheme and the value of money I am getting, but I enjoy the chingu stuff. It really feel nice using it.
Hi all friend i just wnt to know about CHINGU nad wnt to lease for 21 month but i don't know about the address when we can buy for a lease
kindly send me the adress if you know pls send me the address by mail
thank you
I bought chingu in FEB 08 from Manali Super Market & was told by shop keeper that after 21 months Kashmir Tourism people collect this one giving back your money with some interest & also one blanket as Gift.
It has been around 20-25 days passed after 21 months completed but till date no one has contacted us to collect chingu.

So i feel i am cheated. So would like to tell to every one that dont buy anything from Himachal Pradesh as they are big cheater
I bought one too Chingu and paid 2000rs they told same story, I have too paid rest of amount, But did not received any delivery.
I purchased this chingu but I didn't got any written receipt that it will get back my money back by returning chingu after 5 years.
If everybody knows that its fraud, why government does not takes any action on this type of sales..???
hi i recently visited to Manali with my wife. there i visited Vasisht temple which is just 3 km away from manali. On the way to the temple, there are many shops which sells Chingu product. I ignored few shop keepers initially and went ahead but finally one of the shopkeepers suceeded to convince me for just having a knowledge about chingu. He took at least 15 minutes to explain about chingu, about its origin, and lot of other offers which was available through it. Me and wife were impressed initially but we knew there is something fussy about it. And we just told the shopkeeper that maybe later on we might go for it since we were there in Manali for next two days. But later on we decided not to buy it as v thought most of the stuffs were of no use since we stay in Mumbai where the weather does not drop too much. One vague thing i noticed that the shopkeeper showed me all the reciept dated for year 2008 and none were of 2009. This indicated to me that there were no large number buyers for this product. I seriously dont konw whether anybody recives a refund after 21 months. In this blog, there is not a single person who have mentioned that he has got refund of the said amount after 21 months.
we also got cheated in a similar manner at patnitop . please dont fall for thge trap .DO NOT BUY THE SO CALLED CHINGU
We too had been to Manali on December 2009. We too bought the chingu blanket for 6600+500 from the Mall Road Manali. We have the Number of the person and spoke to him regarding the receival of the blanket and assured us that the same will be reaching us in time. We received the Chingu and the other gifts even before the given date. We think the goods are worth the amount spent. May be few hundred here and there. I just feel that its the way to sell their products.

Hi dear all

It was great seeing your post against this issue, the year 2008 we was there in simla and we was also forced by those people and we registered to buy chingu we paid a initial amount of Rs 2000 and we was travelling so we dint ask them to send the parcel immediatly . after 6 months when we called them to send the parcel they said they are sending it, but till date we have not recieved i do have only their contact number . kinldy help us in this issue

I am anu from chennai
Can anyone who is using so called Chingu for more that 21 months tell if there is any change in the size.
As explaned that it expands with body heat.
And please mention if anyone has got any payment back after 21 months or so ...
I was on a tour of Himachal with my friend krishnan, from 1st to 10th March 2010, visited vaisnodevi, dharmashala and waydown went to kulu manali.Visited the Handloom house next to Hidemba temple on the recommondation of our trusted tour driver( who was with us on our previous trip of char-dham too). We were sucked into buying Chingu with usual free gifts amounting to Rs.18K and were told that our gifts shud reach us by 20th March. The shop keeper was a sweet talker and I am now convinced that this whole biz of buyback of Chingu (90% cashback) is nothing but . Usually we do research our destinations/shopping on net but made the czrdinal error of not doing enough homework this time. We are just keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that our parcel arrives at our doorstep... Can't this be addressed thru consumer forum??? This whole issue has taken off the sheen out of our dream trip which consists of meeting Dalai lama in person at dharma shala...
I have just recieved the delivery of the parcel as promised by the vendor, but reading the comments posted here i fear whether this sheme is real or fake. Do the concerened authorities kno bout this scheme?? i doubt. Now i am waiting to see wat happens after 21 months cause honestly i dont think i would have spent this much for what i got unless i knew for sure that i would get 90% of my money back after 21 months. Has anybody cmpleted the 21 months "rental period" ??? I would like to know what happens then.
Hi All,
Recently I had been to manali with my family and kid and me and my wife were very much inqusitive about all this CHINGU stuff. Thankfully our driver had warned us not to fall prey to those gimmicks as it was nothing but just a blanket actually supposed to be available in kashmir. He had also told us that nobody ever comes back to give the money after 2-3 yrs.
We saved a lot of money and tension.

regards
Ajinkya
i bought chingu wid 5 gifts at patni top in j&k. now it is bound to come by vpp. i hav only paid Rs.600 in cash.
i hav the bill and mobile no. of the shopkeeper. can i cancel the product and not give the postman the other Rs. 6000??? or should i take it??
I was there in Manali 2 weeks ago and bought chingu for 7.2k.
That guy initially sai.. he gets points for just get visitor in the shop. Fine.. I wanted to help.. he explained.. the Chingu story and said about the refund and return. althou it didnt sound believable, I wanted to help those Kashmiri. The guy looked honest and innocent, but i think these are all just workers working under a syndicate. They get salary, accumulate some points by selling chingu, to get a 15 days vacation upon accumulating 100 points.. 5 points for each 7k sale I guess.

After buying this, when others approach me, I said, I already bought chingu.. every shopkeeper said.. " you did a good thing"
I thought I'm just paying more than it's actual value.. I'm prepared to be decived. :-)
I'm also curious what happens after 21 months. I'm sure, nobody will come to collect.. what If I go again to same shop? Let's see.. if anybody get a refund, please let me know.
even though i had also bought the same and waiting for the delivery . i went to Patni top and one of the shopkeeper name raju told me about the scheme.his shop is near to childrens park. its seems to be very attractive so i paid 900 rs thru debit card. now even after 1 month i have not received the product. i called him multiple times but no answer. so i think i have finally lost my money.
So I believe that the CHINGU scheme is totally fake.

Moral of the story is : PLEASE NEVER ORDER THE SAME, IF ANYONE WANTS TO BUY PAY THE MONEY AND BRING THE STUFF ALONG WITH YOU.

vizay
Please dont fall prey to this J & K tourism Chingu Scheme.
I have just been to Jammu a month ago (March 2010), was told about this scheme in the jammu market. However later found that the entire package if taken loose will cost half the scheme package.
Have purchased my self a Chingu blanket @ 700/- in the same Jammu Market.
Also this Scheme is not genuine, the shopkeeper fisrt told me he had 12 orders that day & there was a 50% discount due to Navratri. However when asked to show the 12 orders, he was unable to prove even 1.
Later I got to know that the 50% discount is thru out the year & not specific to any festivals.
Requesting all not to get fascinated by the SCHEME...IT'S FAKE
