[Resolved]  Chingu — Deceiving Ignorant Tourists

My husband and I went to Manali for our honeymoon. Out of curiosity we bought something called "Chingu".

The Chingu is a quilt kinda thing. It wasn’t for sale. It was for lease. The cost was 7K; after a period of 21 months, a person from their side will supposedly come and collect the chingu from you after paying you 9K...! And why so? Because Meneka Gandhi has banned the furnaces that were earlier used to heat the chingu stuff to make out shawls from it… 1 chingu once heated expands to make 5-6 shawls each of which sells for around 20-30K. Now human body is the best furnace in the world as claimed by them! Moreover in order to lure the customers they are offering a lot of free products as gift such as bed sheets, angora shawl, carpet, dress materials etc. After 21 months you return the chingu but can keep the gifts all for yourself!

We paid them 2K (1K as advance + 1K for membership). We were told that the products will come to us in Chennai by VPP.

After returning to Chennai we've had certain suspicions about the authenticity of this entire thing. Except for the present contact no. of the dealer in Manali & a receipt provided by him, we dont have any other document of authenticity. We searched online for any previous customers or their experience but found none. We would like you to help us by sharing with us any information that you have on this matter. The VPP is on its way and on receiving it we are expected to pay another 5K.

Incase we've made a blunder in buying this product we would atleast console ourselves with the fact that we've lost 2K but are saved from paying the remaining 5K. Also we would be able to save other ignorant tourists from making such a costly mistake.

SACHIN SODHI
please mention your shop's name ...
I have purchased two chingu of 7k from manali on 19/06/10 along with the following gift

1. Carpet size 9X12 worth about 4500/
2. Two bed sheet worth about 1300/
3. One blanket rabbit worth about 1000/-
4. One showl pashmina plane worth about 1500/
I also think that the scheme might be fake but why to worried the cost we have paid we got the items. But take care to negotiate with the shopkeeper to take the gift items and try to take cash & carry instead of VPP in that case shop keeper will also offer another gift.
Today I was searching to find the experience of those who have completed 21/60 months, as we do not have any authantic prrof of the scheme told by the salesman. He assured to sent me the detail after 45 days.
If anybody have a experience pl, call me at [protected]

Dont buy chnigu from those guys, they will cheat you. They do not come back.
We went to Manali last weekend and listen to all stuff that every one has quoted here. I had similar feelings and questions untill i introspected.

Don't feel cheated...This is a good example of Sales strategy. They are selling 5 to 7 stuff (carpets and blankets and shawls) by advertising the Chingu mixed in customer's greed.

They are booking your order and sending the stuff timely as promised...as we expect from any other honest vendors. So no question on their loyality towards sold stuff and customer relations.

We feel deceived Not because Chingu is not original rather coz of "false promise of money back". Common sense says Who will give you 6 items free with 1 Chingu that will cost you just 660 Rs (10% of 6600) after ~2years. Listening to Shopkeep we start evaluating the cost of free items we are getting along with chingu including money back. Once we are out of that shop we start thinking of authenticity of chingu and money back policy as stated (not written) by shopkeeper and simply consider all free stuff as bonus.

What shopkeeper thinks... He is finding hard to sell 1 blanket but if he exploit the customer greed of getting the 5-6 items free along with some story of J&K handloom and Chingu, he can sell 5-6 items + 1 blanket at the price where customer is not even trying to do the bargain.

And the exploiting the customer greed is no different that what we see daily in advertisements on TV. Otherwise do you feel the same when eating cadbury exclairs, fly with 'Red bull', 'take care' with Garnier products. Very good advertisement skills.

At last we need to consider "Nothing is free on this planet my dear". But yes, they are ruining the reputation of the state and using Govt name which is Bad for Himachal. Officials in Himachal govt and tourism should look into this as early as possible to save the reputation of state.
I made the mistake of buying this product at 7 k...did not see this link earlier..I knew something wrong..however my wife was very impressed with the products!!..I purchased from a trader near Hadimba temple...I seriously feel that action should be taken against these cheaters...at the same time all the hotles should spread awareness about this cheating mechanism
Hi
I wish i had done my home work before going for the stupid Chingu Blanket Scheme. I had visited Kullu only last week and fell for the con. I had paid 1600rs as advance + 500rs for registration. I am supposed to recieve the courier by 6th Feb, 2011 and pay the balance amount 5000rs.

Can anybody tell me if the products are atleast worth the money?
I bought 1 chingu blanket + 1 blanket made of rabbit wool + 1 carpet + 2 shawls.

If the items are not worth the money, i can atleast save the remaining amout which is 5000rs.
This Chingu story is fake. When I visited Manali in March, I was a bit double minded, but I was being asked by all the shopkeepers to at least have a look at it. At one shop I simply told that I have already booked a Chingu (that guy was not selling Chingu but was selling other type of Shawls, Quilt and Blankets), then the shopkeeper himself told me that "Sir you have wasted your money". Then he told me that the products provided are okay to use, but thet are almost doubled in price, just sales technique. He told me that everything combined might be worth 3 or 3.5 k in retail. All those stories are just sales stunt...
its correct same issue with me i paid 7K & had to pay balance 28200 by DD we made the DD payment when we got a check trough the laboratory testing it wasn't animal hair but fine fiber tread
i asked my bank to stop the DD & was successful, the chingu guy called me stating sir your DD could not be cleared after arguing he stated my seniors will talk to you
i also cheated at manali near manu temple by kashmiri chingu shop keeper for this scheme, but i give signing amount of 600 rs, remaining payment will be collect at delivery by V P, pl beware of this cheaters on one can stop them,

mayur shah
I have also purchased the same chingu from Manali last year(October-2011). The person/sales man charged Rs.500/- towards registration with the Govt of Himachal and assured to send us the agreement copy along with Rs.400/- as refund. But till today I have neither received the agreement copy nor the Rs.400/-. The contact No.land line or the mobile No is not working when ever I call the party.

I doubt, weather the govt. is really running a scheme of such type? Why the HP Govt is not taking steps or campaign about the tourists being cheated.
The HP Govt. should give wide publicity against the campaign by the sealers of Chingu.

If any one has contact details of Paradise Chingu blanket near vashisht temple in manali.
MY FREIND AND I HAVE BROUT CHINGU FROM MANALI MALL ROAD MARKET AT 7K 9ITEM TOTAL INCLUDING CHINGU ...I BROUT ONLY CHINGU IN 1100 RS ...[protected]
I and my wife are on honeymoon in manali. We bought a suparu scheme today for 9400. Although i was not much concerned about whether this is authentic or not i believe we got a decent deal with 10 items in total including 1 chingu blanket 1 rabbit blanket 1 pashmina shawl 1 carpet 2 bedsheets 1 blanket 1 normal bedsheet 1 stole 1 kashmiri shawl 1 gents shawl 1 khadi ladies suit. Maybe the shopkeeper charged the us 2k extra but thats ok. I still wonder if it is real pashmina, rabbit fur it is really bad to deceive the customers with the suparu story but that's just a sales strategy. The return deal is just. Sham. And i knew lot from the beginning that it is bull. Just hope the items that we purchased are of decent quality and stay fine for few years. Anyone using it kindly advice/feedback about quality/experience of the items at [protected]@gmail.com
