[Resolved] Citibank India — 1 lakh minimum balance for savings bank in Citibank
Sub: Regarding the Minimum balance in case of savings account. Citibank has recently changed the minimum balance requirement for savings bank account as 1,00,000. Is there any guideline for the banks in changing to such huge muminum balances (including the foreign banks) Is this chainge, with the approval of from the RBI. (huge minimum balance of 1,00,000) Can this be minumum balance justifiable to any banks (including the foreign banks) operating in india with indian customer. My openion is that - If the max limit for this is not laid down, the bank can go to any extent of changing this to any limit (may be 5 lakhs tomorrow) - Alternatively If such huge max limit is fixed by the banks, a rule/guideline should be laid that such banks who charge more than maximu prescribed limit should also ensure that the customer is getting rate of interest @ Fixed deposit rates for that minimum banlance maitained beign fair to the customers. - This should be taken up with the RBI to provide some guidelines to all indian and foreign banks to make the maximum limit appropriate to the indian customers. Thanks in advance for taking appropriate actions in this regard and respond to my complaint. Thanks and Regards, Amarnath Was this information helpful?

Hi All,
The same grievance from my part as well. This seems highly unreasonable and something should be done immediately to deter such outrageous actions. Can somebody provide some insight in to this issue? If not, I would close my citi bank account once and for all. Why the hell on earth should you entrust them with your hard earned money and then pay the price, at their discretion. This sounds just ridiculous!
Thanks
Varun Mohan

I too affected by this rude behaviour of this foreign bank. I had sent request for closing the account, but still it is NOT closed. I had sent all the required things (request letter, broken ATM card, remaining check leaves)
I have approach the Banking Ombudsman, I shall provide u the complaint no. as soon as possible.
I give them less than 0 Stars ...Same has happned to my account after being and account holder for over 8 years, These guys are such losers.. I have already registered to close my account and will never recommend anyone to Citibank ever again.. They have forgotten that an Average Indian Salary is not 1 Lac a month..
Its a shock ..i have savings account Credit card account and Number of FDS with Citibank...Minimum balance of Lakh is ridiculous and method of Citi to tell customers go away...its a bad decision...now i cant trust Citi anymore will wait for few months for FDS to mature and immediatly close Account even Credit card account...
This is unacceptable and clearly a fraud in my opinion. You can not change any account restrictions without proper authorization from the user.
I have also written to the banking ombudsman 2 weeks ago but haven't heard from them yet.
I am planning to move to the consumer court if they put any charges on my account and I would recommend the same to all others.
Let us explore the option of online petition and dragging Citi bank to the consumer courts, they will learn only then.
