i write this not as a faculty member but as an alumnus of iitm. a couple
of computer network related happening have come to my notice recently –
and these have me greatly concerned.

(1) it appears that we have an ongoing ebiz.com movement on campus. for
those not familiar, ebiz sells on-line computer training modules, complete
with exams for something like 8000 bucks. whats wrong with that? well, the
idea is that once you sign up for this, you will recruit two more people
to sign up for the program – for which you get a commission. these two
people will then sign up two more people each and you get a commission
from that too. and so on. yeah, multi-level marketing or pyramid scheme is
what it is. incidentally, the program offered by ebiz is almost identical
to what was offered under the name skybiz in us and australia (and other
places). in the us, the ftc (federal trade commission) cracked down on
this and the operators of skybiz paid up a multi-million dollar
settlement. i cant believe any iitian will fall for this. i find it harder
still to believe that any iitian will rip off a fellow iitian by enrolling
him/her in the program. besides, multi level marketing is illegal. for
anyone getting caught doing this on campus, not getting kicked out of iitm
will not be the major worry – staying out of jail will probably be.
