Fortis Healthcare — Faulty dialysis machine led to near fatal accident with a doctor

Address:Fortis hospital mohali

Patient name - Dr S.K. Dhir
UHID no- 6827324
My father Dr S.K. Dhir is a dialysis patient at fortis hospital mohali for the past 5 years.

On 17/3/22 in the evening he went for dialysis. His pre dialysis weight was 73.1kg and machine was programmed to remove 2800 ml o[censored]ltrafiltrate so that post 4 hour dialysis weight could reach 70.3kg
However after 1.5 hour duration he started feeling dizzy with profuse sweating. On measuring the blood pressure fell to 70/40 mm hg. Then 400 ml normal saline was infused and as his condition stablised his weight was rechecked after disconnecting him from dialyser mid dialysis. It was documented to 70.8 kg which clearly means that the machine had malfunctioned and instead of removing 2800 ml over 4 hours it removed 2700 ml o[censored]ltrafiltrate in 1.5 hour duration that led to sudden drop in blood pressure and a near fatal situation.

On confirmation that the machine was not removing fluid as per entered data, the same dialyser was shifted to another machine and dialysis restarted. However as soon as the dialysis was started on the new machine he started shivering and dialysis had to be closed. So all in all a less than 2.5 hours dialysis was done in total instead of a normal 4 hour session.

Due to incomplete dialysis, he felt extreme weakness and had to get an extra third dialysis done on 19/3/22 against his regular schedule of 2 dialysis a week. And inspite of an incomplete 2.5 hour dialysis that too because of machine malfunction on 17/3/22, he was still charged full cost of dialysis for the subsequent session as well.

And although they had assured of an enquiry of the previous machine malfunction, no action has been taken so far. Neither has anyone explained on what grounds did they charge full cost for an incomplete dialysis that led to a near fatal situation for the patient.

This is the second similar incidence happening with my father in the past one month. The previous incident was also reported on the same platform and inspite of an assurance from fortis authorities that such an unfortunate incidence would not happen in future, it reoccurred within a month. Kindly look into the matter in detail so that such incidents can be prevented in future and further harassment of the patients by the hands of the hospital be stopped.

Hoping for a quick response from authorities in charge.

Thanks and regards
Dr Abhay Dhir
