Incident Report: Life-Threatening Mistake by NetMeds
To help understand the situation, I'll outline the events in chronological order:
On April 30, 2025, I placed an order for two of my hypertension medications. I was looking for cost effective substitutes for both, I selected from the suggested substitutes from the NetMeds site.
I uploaded my prescription, and a NetMeds doctor allowed the substitutes as of the same formulation and same strength.
It was delivered to me on 2nd May. From 3rd or 4th May I started to take the substitute of Prazopress xl 5, the name of the substitute is Glynase xl 5.
On 8th May, I started feeling unrest and by late in the evening I started feeling disoriented. I, along with my wife, went to our GP in the vicinity, he checked by BP, which was almost fine. He said things look okay but in case you continue feeling disoriented, go to a hospital.
Around 10 pm on the same day, I got a seizure at home, foaming from mouth and screaming, with no control over urine. It was a very terrifying experience for my wife, she managed to call a neighbor, book an ambulance to take me to hospital.in half an hour or so, we reached the hospital where they checked my sugar level which to everybody's surprise had dropped to 35.
I have no history of being diabetic, so numerous tests were conducted while they kept me in the ICU for two days. With dextrose IV, my sugar level was restored. Having no medical cover, and being in a tight financial condition, we requested the doctors to discharge me while at home I'd continue to monitor my sugar levels.
I was discharged and was advised to check sugar 2 hourly and have 2 hourly mini meals to avoid another attack of hypoglycemia.
Blood tests and CT scans continued. CT scan suggested an ill generated particle in the pancreas. Endocrinologist suggested a DOTA scan for clarity. We managed to do the DOTa scan, it was still a suspected insulinoma without surety.
Then we were advised for an Exendin Scan that's more advanced than a DOTA scan.in that too, the same ill generated particle in the pancreas was reported.
We were advised to consult one of the top Endocrinologists of Mumbai, whom we could not even afford. Luckily, he has an OPD in KEM also, so we went there to consult him. He checked my scans and said it doesn't look like insulinoma.
So, he advised us to get hospitalized once again where they will conduct more scans to find out the reason for Hypoglycemia. Four days, they conducted several tests, and nothing could be diagnosed. They took a urine sample to be sent to the Toxicology lab in Kochi. The reports would come in 8-10 days, so they discharged me, advising me to keep monitoring the sugar and continue with small meals every two hours.
While at the hospital, my prazopress xl 5 strip got over that we had purchased during first hospitalization. My wife was given a substitute by a chemist near the hospital. After arriving home I compared the salts with my NetMeds ordered substitute of Prazopress xl 5. These did not match. But it was a match with Prazopress.
It was then I thought of checking what salt and formulation Glynase xl 5 is that had been sent to me by NetMeds as a substitute for my BP medicine.
To my surprise, Glynase xl 5 was not even a medication for BP. It's a medicine for Diabetes with side effects of hypoglycemia.
I escalated the matter with NetMeds on the 15th of July which continued till 19th July when they refused to offer any compensation to me in this matter.
That's the reason I am here to request you to kindly look into the matter and provide justice to me. I have suffered a lot due to this mistake by a Netmeds pharmacist and a doctor. Not only financially, but physically and mentally as well.in fact, my family has been in a trauma since 8th May.
I am praying for a compensation of ₹270, 000, with the following break up:
- Spent on hospitalizations - ₹95000
- Spent on Tests, scans, etc - ₹20000
- Expenses on Sugar monitoring device, its strips and lancets - ₹10000
- Closure of my work for 70 days during this, amounting to - ₹80000
- Closure of my wife's work for 30 days when she had to accompany me to hospitals, scans, tests, amounting to ₹30000
- Spent on ambulances, cabs to hospitals, etc. during these 70 days - ₹15000
- I have a single kidney by birth. The nuclear scans have damaged my single kidney; in this period my creatinine rose to 2.4 from 1.7. I have to consult a Nephrologist and take medication for this now, so I cannot really quantify this at this moment.
- I'd also request to consider the impact of this on my health in future.
I am reaching out to you with hope for justice and looking forward to having a compassionate response. I have proofs for everything that I have mentioned here that I can share anytime.
Thanks, and best regards
