SBI Life Insurance — Data leak - My policy details were leaked and used by scammers to commit fraud

I am an SBI Life policyholder and I was targeted by a sophisticated fraud operation that was only possible because my SBI Life policy details were leaked to criminals. In July 2026, I received a call from someone who knew my full name, my exact policy details, plan type, and policy value. Using this information they built a convincing chain of fake officials. First a fake SBI Life service manager, then someone impersonating an IRDAI official from the governing body of insurance. They told me my SBI Life funds worth 281000 were at risk and would be frozen. They knew exact figures from my policy which made it impossible to doubt them. I panicked and ended up paying 50000 from my credit card for a new insurance policy I never needed. They even took my OTP over the phone to lock in the proposal. The verbal promises they made were completely different from the actual policy document. They promised 552000 return in 3 years but the real paperwork showed a 10 year premium and 20 year policy term. If I had not caught this in time I would have been paying 50000 every year for 10 years, totaling 500000 for a policy I was tricked into buying. And this was just the beginning. They were already lining up the next call to freeze my SBI Life funds. I was lucky enough to act fast, file complaints on cybercrime.gov.in and IRDAI Bima Bharosa, and get my 50000 refunded within days. But not everyone will be this lucky. None of this would have been possible if SBI Life had protected my data. The scammers knew everything about my policy. This information could only have come from SBI Life systems, their agents, their bank partners, or their third party vendors. The employee who originally sold me this policy at an SBI bank branch in December 2022 is no longer at that branch. I demand that SBI Life investigate how my personal and policy data was leaked to criminals. If my data was leaked, thousands of other policyholders are likely compromised too. SBI Life owes its customers an explanation and a full data security audit.
