Air India — air india charging hefty amount as cancellation fee for travel cancelled due to covid-19 pandemic | |
I booked air tickets through air india for onward journey from toronto to delhi and delhi to chennai on 12th april and 13th april respectively. And return journey from chennai to delhi and delhi to toronto on 7th sep. And 8th september 2020 respectively. Due to covid-19 pandemic, govt. Of india imposed the first phase of the lockdown in the country in view of the coronavirus outbreak from march 25 to april 14. On april 16, the ministry of civil aviation stated that travellers can ask airlines for full refunds if the bookings were done during the first phase of the lockdown (March 25 to april 14). Though my travel date was during the lockdown period since i booked my ticket on feb 12th, 2020 air india charged a huge amount ₹ 57, 225 ($1050 cad) as cancellation fee. When requested for confirmation email stating the cancellation fee details for me to claim my travel insurance air india refused to send any confirmation email. Due to no proof of cancellation my travel agency rejected my claim. After sending so many emails, online chats and calling air india helpdesk waiting for hrs on queue all efforts to get a confirmation email went on vain. It's totally unfair to deduct a huge amount as cancellation fee which was not my call and due to domestic and international commercial passenger flight operations been suspended during the lockdown.
