Having spent two years working in Australia, I have experienced first hand the xenophobia towards Indians living or working there. I am writing this article to share my experiences at my workplace(ANZ) in Australia. In case you r not aware, ANZ has an IT operations and development center at Bangalore where it has been steadfastly outsourcing jobs in the last decade to cut its operational costs back in AUS.However, racial discrimination and abuse towards Indians is so rampant at ANZ that I can't help writing about it, in light of the recent racial attacks on Indian students in AUS.When I quit ANZ, the primary reason was hostile work environment and total lack of respect for me by some of my Aussie counterparts. This was borne out of racial prejudice. This racial mindset is so deeply entrenched in ANZ work culture that it is now accepted as comming with the territory for all those poor Indians who unwittingly choose to work for ANZ.Indian staff is looked down upon and treated as second class citizens in the so called ANZ family. On most ocassions this racial treatment is subtle and disguised in order to evade attention, nevertheless it does exist. It is not uncommon to be confronted with situations such as the ones described below:1. If you happen to scan through email trails, you would often come across Indian staff being referred to as bangers, bloody Indians, , slumdog etc.Over a period, you will probably learn to handle such things "professionally" and turn a blind eye to such derogatory remarks.to.Woe betide those who r not in the good books of their Aussie counterparts.Any work that you do would be subjected to endless reviews, a witchhunt would commence to expose every possible bug or flaw that might exist in ur work, which would then be magnified and escalated to various levels. No matter how good a job you might have done, you will never be given recognition for ur work.ur Aussie counterparts would take delight in taking potshots at you at every possible opportunity.3.Being posted in AUS is perhaps the worst thing that can happen to u.I have spent almost to years in AUS and I am actutely aware of the isolation and hostility that you have to put up with at ur work place.Aussie society is not exactly renowned for its racial tolerance and this ugly side manifests itself at workplace in various forms such as: 1.you being completely ignored in team meetings to.you ask somebody something and he/she turns his/her face away pretending that you don't exist.3.ur Aussie colleagues r downright rude, try to humiliate you and crack disgusting jokes about Indians.for.you slave at ur desk, while ur Aussie counterparts relax over the pool table in the cafeteria.5.you are constantly referred to as bloody Indian, , curry muncher etc.6.you r asked to work long hours and sometimes on weekends whereas ur Aussie colleagues would balk even at the suggestion of working for an extra hour.7.you receive negative feedback in ur performance appraisal despite doing a good job whereas ur Aussie counterpart would always receive rave reviews for their work. The worst perpetrators of this racially motivated behavior that I have come across at ANZ r:1.Fulvio Orlich to.Cameroon McKeral 3.Aaron Uebergang for.John Peebles 5.Dave McCormack. No I am not trying to settle old scores, I am merely trying to expose these tyrants who wilfully practice such behavior borne out of deep seated racial prejudice towards Indians.Friends beware, if you r a self-respecting individual, think twice before you decide to work for ANZ and do contemplate seriously if you harbour any thoughts to living and working in AUS.AUS, for all its attractions, remains a xenophobic and racist society.
Hello Anubutra

I worked with you at the ANZ and i have a few queries about your comments as I don’t think you have been entirely truthful in your comments
I have posted my reply to your legally slanderous accusations to other sites that have agread to remove your comments. I would dearly hope that the people that you name take this further as I for one would be more than glad to act as a witness and put your comments into perspective.

IT operations and development centre at Bangalore where it has been steadfastly outsourcing jobs in the last decade to cut its operational costs back in AUS.
This is the only honest thing you said in your comment. You acknowledge that the senior management policy of off shoring jobs to India resulted in your employment. Your employment itself was an act of racism, if management did not offshore to India your employment would have been very unlikely considering your skill level. Your comments are a testimony to this.

Indian staff is looked down upon and treated as second class citizens in the so called ANZ family. On most occasions this racial treatment is subtle and disguised in order to evade attention, nevertheless it does exist. It is not uncommon to be confronted with situations such as the ones described below:1. If you happen to scan through email trails, you would often come across Indian staff being referred to as bangers, bloody Indians, , slumdog etc.Over a period, you will probably learn to handle such things "professionally" and turn a blind eye to such derogatory remarks.to.

Why did you not send these emails to ANZ HR. The people writing such emails would have been instantly dismissed. Are you able to forward any emails of this nature to this blog that you forwarded to ANZ HR? Please don’t come back and say that you don’t have any emails from the ANZ. I myself have left the ANZ several years ago and still have several emails on file that I can produce at any time. Surely if you did receive such emails you would have kept them, could provide examples.

Woe betide those who r not in the good books of their Aussie counterparts.
So there were Indian staff that were treated differently to yourself? Why were they in the good books rather than yourself...what did they do differently?

Any work that you do would be subjected to endless reviews, a witchhunt would commence to expose every possible bug or flaw that might exist in ur work, which would then be magnified and escalated to various levels.
This was the same for any people that worked in the same area as yourself and you have rather interestingly left out the fact you worked in the QA environment. We checked & double checked everyone’s work to ensure the integrity of the environments...this was everyone’s job?

No matter how good a job you might have done, you will never be given recognition for ur work.ur

At the ANZ all employees are given "frequent flying miles" to give to other employees as rewards for completing tasks in a timely manner. These frequent flying miles can be cashed in for goods or gift vouchers...You never received any I take it even from your Indian counterparts?

you slave at ur desk, while ur Aussie counterparts relax over the pool table in the cafeteria.
Which building had the cafeteria with a pool table?

sometimes on weekends whereas ur Aussie colleagues would balk even at the suggestion of working for an extra hour.
Really? I personally worked around 80 hours week. In fact i started at 8:30 am supported my colleges that worked in Melbourne until around 5 pm. Went home had tea and logged back on at 7 pm and continue to work until 10-11 pm at night supporting my Indian counterparts to guarantee the smooth flow of tasks between sites? I was in work %50 of weekends and i cannot remember seeing you anubutra and I worked with you for several years...

7.you receive negative feedback in ur performance appraisal despite doing a good job whereas ur Aussie counterpart would always receive rave reviews for their work.

Anubutra come on!. When you came to the QA environment it used to take 4-8 hours to get systems up and running. On average when you took over it took 20 working days what did you expect to receive from this gross negligence...a promotion? IT should have been brought up in your performance review. This would have affected the way people related to you when you were causing them delays that they had to work extended hours to minimise this impact.
Also you forget to inform your readers that all Indian resources have 2 managers. 1 which is the functional manager who resides in Australia who allocates work and your line manager who is in India. Your Indian manager
is responsible for your review and overrides his Australian manager. I know this because for my Indian resources the rating that I allocated for them was revised down by my Indian counterpart as every one is graded on a bell curve i.e there are only X number of 2a’s to be rewarded. Also my resources even though they got along well with their Australian counterparts got negative feedback from their Indian counterparts due to their work ethic and interpersonal skills.

The worst perpetrators of this racially motivated behavior that I have come across at ANZ r:1.Fulvio Orlich to.Cameroon McKeral 3.Aaron Uebergang for.John Peebles 5.Dave McCormack.
Out of interest anubutra. The 5 people you have listed are from 5 different racial backgrounds do you know what they are? Can you recall what their racial backgrounds were? or are all light coloured skin people the same to you? Just because a person is white and living in Australia does not make him Australian. We are a multicultural society and the ANZ have offices throughout the world were they pull resources from. You are an example of this policy but you seem to deem everyone into one category. This is like myself associating you with Pakistan due to your appearance and referring to yourself as a typical racist Pakistani. I think your simplistic understanding of race states more about yourself than anything else. You really do need to seek assistance with this as it’s something that pores from your personality that is obvious in your comments and even more obvious after meeting you.

No I am not trying to settle old scores, I am merely trying to expose these tyrants who wilfully practice such behavior borne out of deep seated racial prejudice towards Indians.
Of course you are not anubutra no-one would ever say this
Friends beware, if you r a self-respecting individual, think twice before you decide to work for ANZ and do contemplate seriously if you harbour any thoughts to living and working in AUS.AUS, for all its attractions, remains a xenophobic and racist society.

But if you don’t have the skills to backup your resume please apply for job at the ANZ as they will employee you with less stringent standards if you are Indian. Then afterwards you can claim that your gross incompetence was due to other people attitudes and supply no evidence to support this. You can walk confident that all your country men will back you as the victim.

Good luck anubutra...I hope you grow from this.
BTW the NAB about to offshore...please do the needful and continue in the manner that all your country men will be judged by.
Anubrata,

We used to work together in Melbourne and in Bangalore. Being an Indian, working in ANZ Australia was a pleasure. I never came across any racism as you specify. Please don't make unnecessary accusations and taint the company which used to provide for you. I have also worked in Melbourne and made many friends. I found most of the Aussies very friendly and helpful. I can say that my time in Melbourne was one the best times I have had professionally. I, inturn found you very aloof and never used mix around with poeple (Aussie or Indian for that matter!!). Better introspect than just accusing others.

Anyway, best of luck to you and hope you grow to be a better person.
Hey,

Im getting an offer from ANZ Bangalore. Can i go and accept it . i have oevr all 10yrs of exp and im joing there as an analyst. is that is fine. If so how much i can demand for packge as a 10 yrs exp guy. my currtent package is 10.5 lak pa. plz revert back to me in my email address so that i can have a dession on it .
I tried to purchase Skype credit using my ANZ Visa Gold card around 9:15 pm on Thursday, 15/10/09. The Skype website required that I use Verified by Visa, which is a service I do not wish to use and do not recall consenting to use. Verified by Visa required me to input a password, and after it rejected 3 password attempts, asked me to verify my details (card number, name, date of birth). It also rejected this identification, and prevented me from continuing with my purchase, instructing me to contact my financial institution. I called ANZ on 13 33 50, and spoke to “Daniel” (ID number 599).

After asking me a series of identification questions, he claimed he was unable to successfully identify me, and refused to unblock Verified by Visa. He further refused to identify me by any other means, or to even repeat the identification questions he had asked previously. At this time, I passed the phone to my partner, with whom I share a joint Access account, who requested to speak to a supervisor. “Daniel” claimed that he was the supervisor, that there was nobody in ANZ who would be able to assist us at this time, and that my only option would be to physically go to an ANZ branch and show identification there. He also claimed that it was Skype that had implemented Verified by Visa, which, according to the Skype website, is patently untrue.

Despite several requests to find a solution to this problem and to simply go over the identification questions again, he refused to help. I find it entirely absurd that there was no way to help me and I was unable to proceed with my purchase. It is equally unbelievable that there would not be anyone in the whole of ANZ who would have had the authority to override “Daniel” and ensure an at least adequate level of customer service. I am extremely disappointed in ANZ’s lack of helpfulness, and am unsure if I want to continue using a bank that is not willing to help its customers in a reasonable manner. This whole experience has been extremely unsatisfying.
I agree with the compalint about ANZ, not sure abt austalian scene but in Bangalore India the management is sick this i came to know through my frnd who is working here. they were treated as slaves and demand extra free hours of working with out even providing transport, too bad anz when will you learn in this competetive world, remember its very diffciult to raise but very very easy to fall so try to keep up the hopes and increase moral value among yourselves.
Hello.
I am an Australian born of immigrant Indian parents. I wish to set straight the myth surrounding the attacks on Indian students. NONE, ie not a single one of the attcks thus far has been perpetrated by
an 'Aussie'. The attacks are being carried out by gangs of immigrant Lebanese, but due to the pathetic political correctness in this country, the media does not have the guts to report the truth.
The average Aussie may well be a little prejudiced, but he sure as heck is not going to attack you.
OK, I worked for ANZ for 5 years in collections, and left simply because of the horrifying lack of morals that cards has, and the absolute disregard the ANZ has for the complaints process.
The Aussies I worked with (excepting some of the senior managers) were very warm hearted and good spirited.

good on you mate,

Ranji.
Just who the [censored] are you to comment on my competence? After I quit ANZ, I have received scores of job offers. I guess employers don't go about offerring jobs to incompetent fools..You have claimed in your article: "But if you don’t have the skills to backup your resume please apply for job at the ANZ as they will employee you with less stringent standards if you are Indian. Then afterwards you can claim that your gross incompetence was due to other people attitudes and supply no evidence to support this" Your statement betrays a racist mindset. It basically says:
1. Indians are generally incompetent/less skilled as compared to their Australian counterparts and therefore need to be judged by less stringent standards.

I can assure you that you are not the only one who harbours these thoughts, your mindset is shared by vast majority of Aussie colleagues and it manifests itself through their behavior and day to day interaction with Indian counterparts. I know this having worked at ANZ for more than 6 years.

Point number 2: You have mentioned "I was in work %50 of weekends and i cannot remember seeing you anubutra and I worked with you for several years"

Really, do you have any idea how many weekends have I had to work?

pojnt no. 3: I think your simplistic understanding of race states more about yourself than anything else. You really do need to seek assistance with this as it’s something that pores from your personality that is obvious in your comments and even more obvious after meeting you.

Really, instead of levelling personal attacks I suggest you do an introspection and work on your prejudices and attitude.

You have blogged under the the name "Former Work College". Perhaps you could reveal your identity and let come clean instead of playing this cloak and dagger stuff. I mean, if you are really serious about your allegations why would you want to conceal your identity?

And listen up pal, India is a democratic country and I being an Indian citizen am free to voice my opinions and views. I have merely narrated my experiences at my former workplace (ANZ). If this has ruffled a few feathers then it clearly indicates that you guys are uncomfortable hearing the truth from an ex-employee. Here is some unsolicited advise for you: Instead of levelling counter-allegations you guys might want to focus your energies at reforming your workplace and ensuring that you guys accord equal status, opportunity and respect to your Indian colleagues instead of treating them as slaves or second class citizens. Good luck.
Obama’s new policy advocates dialogue with Burma while maintaining the existing sanctions. Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury Department already has a sanction list that prevents selected members of the regime from making financial transactions in the U.S. banking system.
What about Australian Government's policy on regime, why we Burmese civilians are forced to close down our accounts with ANZ. My NON-Burmese husband is furious concerning ANZ's action.
I have just been fired from my job at ANZ. I was bullied by an Australian called Cara Bombagi, located at Docklands. An Indian woman was hired at the same time as me and she was treated with respect and I was treated with contempt. Now, they have hired a close friend of the Indian woman, who is also an Indian, to replace me. Now the first Indian woman treats me with absolutely no respect and insists on me helping her but she won't help me!! I am Australian. My Australian heritage dates back to the 1800's. My ancestors were NOT convicts but were from Ireland and were pioneers of this country. My father fought the Japanese in WWII. It took me a very long time to find a job as it's very hard to find work when you're middle aged and have spent your life bringing up children and taking care of elderly parents. One group interview I went to about 2 years ago, consisted of about 15 people, 13 of them were Indians, and English was their second language. It was a customer service position and I didn't get the job as the Indians were hired. When they showed a DVD of the dept we would be working in, it was full of Indians. When you are close to being homeless and you can't get a job because the foreigners are preferred by employers, it's easy to become racist. In my previous job at NAB, nearly everyone was Indian or Asian. White Australians consisted of about 2% of the staff. As well, I had to put up with Australian customers complaining about the staff they have to speak to when they call the bank being foreigners as they CANNOT UNDERSTAND A WORD THEY ARE SAYING!!! This is in spite of the fact that NAB do not outsource to other countries.
So now I don't know how long ti will be before I get another job. My rent keeps going up and again it's because of the foreigners!!! There are so many new people coming to this country every month that there are not enough rental properties, so the real estate agents take advantage of this because of the huge demand for housing. It is appalling!!! Yes it is very very very easy to become racist when you are in your 40's and you can remember when Melbourne was a fantastic place to live, as you could get a job and affordable housing. NOT ANYMORE!!!
Sorry, I was a manager at ANZ and I have never seen such blatant bullying and harassment anywhere in the world and I have lived and worked in four different countries. ANZ's "investigators" are a joke when it comes to investigating a complaint. This company is out of control, at least in my district. Thank God I am no longer there
I have to agree with the complainant. I was a manager at ANZ and never saw such bullying and harassment at any other company in my life. I have worked and lived in four different countries and can tell you that ANZ was by far the most bullying and harassing culture I have ever encountered. Perhaps it was just in my district as that is all I can speak of but what I did see was barbaric. Don't work for this company. Thank God I got out.
I agree that ANZ culture is full of bullying Managers and very rude individuals to work on a daily basis with. I received a retrenchment a year ago but simply went through 'hell' while enduring the 'torture' that I was subjected to on a daily basis. The vebal, psychological, physical abuse was the worst thing I had ever experienced in my whole 30 years of the work force. There was nothing I could do except endure it until the last day came and I was gone, as I was so confused and worried that I would not find another job again. I am a single mother with two children and really needed to work, so I focused on finding another job in another company, but it was hard having to endure the 'racist slurs', verbal abuse, physical abuse also, I was called an "introvert, a loaner and not agressive enough" in a performance review before they down graded my rating and then retrenched me, it was tortue and humiliating to have this happen at my age. I am not Indian, but I can tell you the ANZ culture in the worst in the world, I just don't understand why no-one can do anything about this, even the TV, Robert Reeves experience is on google, but it doesn't seem to have done anything to stop this behaviour of Managers at ANZ, I don't know why!?
Anubrata
I am so glad that through your wealth of expertise in the IT field you choose to use your real name to place on record your ability to work with others.

You still did not answer my question of why your fellow indian staff did not reward you any "frequent flyer miles" for your ability to deliver on routine tasks.

Why your indian manager gave you a poor performance review based off feedback from complaints in bangalore (one of which deemed you as untouchable - may want to address personal hygenie) and australia.

Your attitude of blaming everyone but yourself and when there is no logical reason why no one is blame but yourself you resolve to blame racisim as the reason why you did not fit in with ALL the people you worked with.

Anz needs to look at Robert Revees platform against endemic corruption and abuse 2008 concurrent, they have a class action in every country in the world are the aggressively litigated for Fraud, excess fees and bullying. India is where they are outsourcing, its all based on greed
Why these bull discussions ...You r hired to be fired at some point of time and just accept it and move on...find a new job...thats it.
Anubrata,

I worked in ANZ as an Indian. The people were lovely and no racism in sight. I read this message and i think you giving yourself bad reputation and also not doing the needful for our culture or for ANZ or for the great aussies around us. i even worked later with some of those names. I think you just are not integrating and putting an effort and bad attitude to the workplace.

I hope u do reflect on trying to say bad things about very nice people, and that anyone who is reading can understand we are not like this person.

Thank you and i hope those reading can understand this is one man only not all o[censored]s.
