Human civilization through the last 10, 000 years has considered a dog as man's best friend. Unfortunately I find that in our city there are several people who have not evolved enough at the same pace as humans have done throughout India and the foreign countries. Humans all around us have the right to commit nuisance on the roads as the law and civilians turn a blind eye. Then what's wrong with dogs? Humans all around us make so much unwanted noise and burst crackers at the slightest pretext. What's wrong with dogs barking? It's because the newly rich people are going all out to buy expensive foreign purebreds that the domestication of street pups has almost ceased. This is the root cause of the proliferation of their numbers on the roads. In my childhood days, almost every household used to have a desi dog that they had caught from the street and they used to keep those pets indoors.

I would strongly suggest that on the one hand KMC should castrate as many diseased dogs as possible and let the the healthy ones live normal lives. I do not recommend killing off the diseased ones. They would die a natural death which every creature deserves, including humans. The dogs that are considered dangerous owing to their aggressive attitude should of course be put to sleep as they do pose a hazard to the public.

On the other hand what the KMC could do towards a long term progress in this matter is to think of ways and means of popularizing the domestication of stray dogs as our Indian dogs are much better suited for the average household owing to their simple expectations and almost zero demands. I have myself rescued one puppy from being crushed on the road and I can assure you that he is now the proudest Indian alive. I just wish others could also pick up beautiful pups from the streets. This would automatically reduce the street dog population. The picture of my puppy is attached.

I am a resident of Ward 65 under Kolkata Municipal Corporation. There are at least 20-25 dogs in 100 meters of our residence and they are not only barking they often chase the children and other passers by in the said locality. We are very much afraid of the free street dogs.

I really wonder if these street dog related issues are really being heard over by the KMC authorities, I myself am an avid dog lover but these naive creatures are multiplying in numbers day by day. There has been a spurt in growth of numbers of the dogs every year as they mate and produce 3-4 puppies every year. Even in my area there were just 2-3 dogs but now the number is easily around 15-20. This is the scene from Asutosh Mukherjee Rd till the Padmapukur tank, as if there is a need to walk late in the night in these lanes it becomes a nightmare with these dogs harassing people regularly. It is quite evident that this situation is getting worse in every part of the city, I still am wondering whether this really does bother the KMC or not!

Hi Everyone!

Earth.aware suggests "why don't you feed the stray dogs?" I want to do just that. I feel terrible, uncomfortable and frustrated when I see these poor dogs are begging for foods and most o[censored]s ignoring them. I have been thinking of finding a way to provide food on a regular basis but of course without getting into any trouble from anyone. Also the summer is fast approaching and they'd need drink of water. I'd like to provide as much water and food as possible to the local street dogs. I have been doing that in a one-off way but was wondering if earth.aware or anyone else have any experience or suggestions for me on how to go about it in a structured way. For example, is anyone aware of any organization that is doing a good job providing food and water to the local street dogs- perhaps I can just join them.

I thank in advance for any advice or suggestions!
