Laxminarayan Shetty — LaxmiNarayan Shetty A social activist and an extortionist by profession

LaxmiNarayan Shetty is an entrepreneur, animal lover, social activist and political enthusiast according to his Twitter bio which allows him to describe in a few words. However, it is just the tip of the iceberg because the so-called social activist in the name of RTI activism has a get-rich-quick plan in place while threatening builders in Mumbai.

In the past, Mulund Police had arrested Laxminarayan Shetty along with two others accused on the charge of running an extortion racket targeting builders. In the pretext of being an RTI activist, who are known to expose corruption and arbitrariness in the country- Laxmi Narayan Shetty had blackmailed, threatened and demanded money from the builder, Sanjay Gharat.

According to a Mumbai Mirror article, Shetty met the developer and sought Rs 1 lakh for not blocking the repairs by filing a complaint with the local BMC ward office. According to the first information report (FIR), Gharat then paid Rs 50, 000 to Laxmi Narayan Shetty. A few months later, he was then approached by the second accused, Chandanshive who demanded Rs 1 lakh and paid him Rs. 10, 000.

Later, the third accused Mhaske tried to extract more money by saying he was related to the two accused. Then, Gharat alerted the Mulund police who sought their remand for seven days and booked them under the IPC sections 384, 385, 506 after the court granted the request to find if the trio was part of the bigger extortion ring.

With two pending criminal cases against Laxmi Narayan Shetty, such criminals are only getting more powerful while claiming to be RTI activists and using a variety of tactics such as extortion payment plot and blackmailing innocent victims. Consequently, a strong perception has been created of calling RTI users and activists’ as misusers, extortionists and blackmailers.
