Uber India — Can't book rides with american express

Uber site lists American Express as a supporting payment method, and though I'm able to successfully add the card as a payment method, I'm unable to book any ride using this card
The card works in all other places, but not in Uber
Contacting customer support wasn't helpful, all I got was "We'll be unable to assist with removing your payment method restriction at this time"

I'm stuck with withdrawing cash from ATMs which turns out to be very expensive with high withdrawal fees
