Booking.com — failed to refund my money from cancellation of booking

I have booked on booking.com in kodaikanal. They asked me to pay a advance for confirming the reservation. Later they call me asked me to cancel the booking and they would refund the advance. I did not cancel the booking. Later when i tried to contact them over phone or email to plan for my trip. None of them were answered. So, i had to cancel my booking within the set time for free cancellation. I have made cancellation on a hotel and booking.com confirmed the cancellation was free.

When i called them for refund, they argue that it was a no show and i did not inform them about the cancellation. When i sent them the screenshot from booking.com showing the cancellation confirmation, now they say that the cancellation does not cover the advance paid.

On contacting booking.com there is no response.
