[Resolved]  Standard Chartered — Bank Asking for cleared payments after 4 years

My mom owned a StandardCharted credit card, and the credit went upto 33000. We then payed the full amount in cash, closed the accounts and cut the card into two(destroyed it) in the year 2005. The bank did not contact us for anything after that as everything that needed to be done was cleared.
We then scrapped all the documents recently as a lot of time had passed and the documents were not needed.

Today (ie. 15 Dec 2009) an employee from the Standard Charted bank, Chennai Branch contacted us stating that there are still some dues (about 13000) pending which are needed to be paid.
When asked - Why were we contacted after such a long time?
They replied - As the dues are pending with the Bank so they can contact us any time.
We also asked - Why were the monthly Bank statements not sent?
And the reply was that they send the statements for upto 9months and if there is no response then they stop doing so.

We would really appreciate i[censored] look into the matter and give a suggestion for the next step to be taken in the future.

Thank you.
