To,
The Appellate Authority, SpiceJet Ltd.
DGCA Grievance Cell
Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) Public Grievance Officer Date 6 Sept 2025
Respected Sir/Madam,
We are constrained to escalate my complaint regarding the incident on my recent SpiceJet journey, PNR XH986N, as the response received from the Nodal Officer has failed to address the key issues raised. The Summary of the Incident:
We were harassed and humiliated at the boarding gate despite being a senior citizen. We were charged ₹6, 000 for alleged 8 kg excess hand baggage, whereas my understanding is that the excess weight was not more than 2 kg. No printed weight slip was provided to confirm the excess baggage measurement.
A fellow passenger (Seat 23C), carrying visibly more baggage, was allowed to proceed without charges after making calls to higher officials, while I was detained and forced to pay showing clear discriminatory enforcement. Several other passengers were not even checked for hand baggage weight while I was singled out.
Concerns with SpiceJet's Response:
Their email merely repeats the baggage policy, without addressing the lack of proof, inconsistent enforcement, or discriminatory behaviour. They have refused refund or redressal despite absence of documented evidence of the claimed 8 kg excess. No assurance has been given to prevent recurrence of such humiliation of senior citizens and as soft target to take money.
Requested Action:
1. Information on the conduct of the boarding gate staff at Kolkata airport at gate no 15 on 28 Aug 25.
2. Refund of the unjustified baggage charges (₹6, 000) as no printed slip for actual weight given.
4. Assurance as senior citizens not be treated as easy targets for last-minute revenue collection at boarding gates.
We are Attaching the documents: SpiceJet responses (Mr. Abhishek Vatsa, Mr. Pankaj Choudhary), Original complaint, GST invoice for baggage charge received later on
This incident caused severe mental distress and humiliation. We are therefore seeking urgent redressal under DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements which mandate fair treatment of passengers and special assistance to senior citizens.
Regards,
Dr. Jayanta K. Saha & Smt Mousumi Saha
