Respected Sir/Madam,
I am a student of class 10th[protected] CBSE board. Yesterday the first term examination of Social Science (Set No. 4) was held. By the evening answer key was released by the board. But I found many answers dubious and I am confused regarding them. They are as follow-
Question 26: Read the facts regarding the revolution of the liberals in Europe during 1848 and choose the correct option:
1. Abdication of the Monarch
2. Universal male suffrage had been proclaimed
3. Political rights were given to women
4. Freedom of the press had been asked for
(a) only 1 and 2 are correct
(b) only 1, 2 and 3 are correct
(c) only 1and 4 are correct
(d) only 1, 2 and 4 are correct
The answer to this question as per the answer key released by the cbse is (d) but according to me this is wrong.
There's no mention in the book that universal male suffrage had been proclaimed. Non-property owning men and women were given no political rights. It is written in the page no. 9 of the book that "... The right to vote and to get elected was granted exclusively to property owning men. Men without property and all women were excluded from political rights. Only for a brief period under the jacobins did all adult males enjoy suffrage. However the napoleonic code went back to limited suffrage and reduced women to the status of minor subject to authority of fathers and husbands"
The question has no mention of jacobins. Also the question asks about the revolutions of the liberals and it is is written in the book that the liberals were against giving right to non-property owning men.
So according to me the right answer should be option (c).
Question 31: Two statements are given below as Assertion (A) and reason (R). Read the statement and choose the most appropriate option.
Assertion (A): In Britain the formation of the nation-state was not the result of a sudden upheaval.
Reason(R): Ethnic groups of Britain extended its influence.
(a) both assertion and reason are true and the reason is a correct explanation of assertion
(b) Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion
(c) assertion is true but reason is false
(d) assertion is false but reason is true
The answer to this question is given as (a) in the answer key.
According to me the assertion is true but the reason is false. Because Britain includes England, Scotland and Wales. But only the influence of England was increased, Scotland's and Wales's distinctive culture and influence was suppressed by the England. So we cannot say that the ethnic groups of Britain extended its influence. Only England extended its influence. It is mentioned in the page 22 of the book. "... The primary identities of the people who inhabited the British Isles were ethnic ones such as English, Welsh, Scot or Irish. All of these group had their own cultural and political traditions . But as the English nation steady grew in wealth, importance and power it was able to extend its influence over the other nations of the Islands... England was able to impose its influence on Scotland... The growth of a British identity means that Scotland's distinctive culture and political traditions were systematically suppressed... New British nation was forged through the propagation of a dominant English culture... The older nations survived only as subordinate partners in this union."
Therefore the correct answer should be option (c).
Question 57: Which one of the following is the main result of increasing irrigation facilities in the field of agriculture?
(a) increase in production
(b) increase in productivity
(c) change in cropping pattern
(d) promote high yielding of crops
The answer key shows option (a) as correct.
The paragraph associated with this question clearly says that "...The government can spend some money or banks can provide a loan to construct a well for her family to irrigate the land. Lakshmi will then be able to irrigate land and take a second crop wheat during the Rabi season."
Also, it is mentioned in the book that the irrigation facilities are the main reason for growth of rice in the states of Punjab and Haryana. Earlier Punjab and Haryana only used to grow wheat as there is less rainfall in in these areas but with good irrigation facilities that came during the green revolution these States also started growing rice recently. So we can clearly see that increasing irrigation facilities can lead to a change in cropping pattern.
Moreover the option (a) and (b) are the same only the words used are different. 'Increase in production' and 'increase in productivity' is actually the same thing. If option (a) is correct then option (b) should also be correct. So according to me the most appropriate answer is option (c).
Question 25: Assertion(A): After Russian occupation in Poland the Russian language was imposed on its people.
Reason(R): The use of polish soon came to be a symbol of struggle against Russian dominance.
(a) both assertion and reason are true and the reason is a correct explanation of assertion
(b) Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion
(c) assertion is true but reason is false
(d) assertion is false but reason is true
According to answer key the correct option is (a).
Both the statements are true. But reason isn't the correct explanation of the assertion. Russian language was imposed on people not because polish came to be seen as a symbol of struggle against Russian dominance but it was the other way round.
Firstly the Russian occupation of Poland happened and because of this polish came to be a symbol of struggle against Russian dominance. It was because of the Russian occupation in Poland and imposition of Russian language, that the use of polish came to be seen as a symbol of struggle.
So option (a) would have been correct if assertion and reason statements had switched places with each other. But here the correct option should be (b) because both are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
I hope that you'll take time to think over the arguments that I have provided. I have also written an email to info.[protected]@gov.in and have attached all the pictures from books . And please do correct the answers if they are wrong because this examination is very important and our future is dependent on it. Its my request to you to change the wrong answers provided in the answer key as fast as possible so that our marksheets get evaluated in the right way.
Please consider to think over my arguments.
Yours forever obliged student,
