On October 7th, I became a victim of a mobile based identity theft in which Airtel was a party. An unauthorized person with no resemblance to me or my personal details approached Airtel indicating that he had lost his mobile phone and he needs a duplicate SIM card. The stranger produced proof that did not match with any of my existing details in the Airtel’s system. In spite of these grave discrepancies, Airtel issued a duplicate SIM and activated the new phone without ever contacting me. In no time, the person who is part of an illegal money transfer scheme, withdrew lakhs from my bank a/c using the pwd being sent to my registered mobile no which was now in the thief's hands thanks to Airtel's help. When the bank finally reached me and alerted me, I immediately approached Airtel. Airtel did not help and insisted that I call from my mobile which was by now deactivated. Airtel refused to share any information saying that their IT person has left for the day. After much of haggling and running around, Airtel blocked the duplicate SIM. As you can, Airtel demonstrated utmost negligence in issuing the duplicate SIM and thus been a party to the illegal money transfer schemes. If Airtlel has followed standard verification procedures, this would have never happened. Airtel is completely responsible for selling out my identity. Airtel customers should be warned about the security of their personal information Was this information helpful? |
