I was running behind the branch manager from 18 may, 2008 to get the educational loan. After the long period he had accepted my application on 22 august, 2008. Now the branch manager is in leave from 24 august, 2008. Today i went to bank to get information about my loan, the deputy manager told me that he didn't receive any application from my side. He told me to come after 12 september, 2008. I informed that my college starts from 1 september, at that time there was no response from the deputy manager. The manager and deputy manager are treating me as a dog. If they are responding properly means surely i'll attend suicide.

Government of India in consultation with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Indian Banker's Association (IBA) has framed a Comprehensive Educational Loan Scheme to ensure that no deserving student in the Country is deprived of higher education for want of finances. The new scheme covers all type of courses including professional courses in schools and colleges in India and abroad.
The Salient features of the scheme are as under:
    • The scheme envisages loans up to Rs.7.5 lakh for studies in India and up to Rs. 15 lakh for studies abroad.
    • For loans up to Rs. 4 lakh no collateral or margin is required and the interest rate is not to exceed the Prime Lending Rates (PLR). For loans above Rs. 4 lakh the interest rate will not exceed PLR plus 1 percent.
    • The loans are to be repaid over a period of 5 to 7 years with provision of grace period of one year after completion of studies
    Tax Benefit
Repayment of an education loan is deductible under section 80E of the Income Tax Act. The yearly limit for deduction is Rs. 40, 000 (for both the principal and the interest). Only loans taken for higher education - fulltime studies in any graduate or post-graduate, professional, and pure and applied science courses - may claim deduction. The deduction will be available for a maximum of eight years starting from the day you start repaying.
Equitable Access to quality higher education has been a concern of the University Grants Commission. To this purpose the Commission, besides encouraging colleges and universities to provide for liberal financial support to the meritorious but needy students, has also been instrumental in educational loan scheme. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued guidelines in this regard to all commercial banks. A large number of banks have already launched educational loan schemes. Provided below are links to the respective website of individual banks offering such facilities.
Since there is a moratorium period, how will my repayments be determined?
    A. The outstanding interest for the moratorium period will be added to the loan amount at the time of commencement of the repayment. The EMI will be determined on this amount at the time the repayment is to commence.
    Q. What is EMI? How is it calculated?
    A. EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalments. This instalment comprises both principal and interest components. Your EMI would be calculated depending on the tenor you choose, to repay your loan. The EMI would be higher if you choose to repay within a shorter period as against a longer-term loan. A shorter repayment period, however, reduces your interest cost over the term of the loan.
    Q. What is the repayment schedule like?
    A. The repayment would begin one year after the course period or six months after you get a job, whichever is earlier. You are expected to pay a minimum amount equivalent to the EMI on a monthly basis. However, you can choose to pay more than the EMI, and we do not charge any prepayment penalty.
    Q. Where can I avail of a SBI educational loan?
    A. The loan is available from all branches in metro/urban areas as well as those having personal banking divisions
A term loan granted to Indian Nationals for pursuing higher education in India or abroad where admission has been secured.

Education is central to the development in any country. Every government levies policies in the National and State level to ensure that this basic need of the population is met through appropriate public and private sector initiatives. With a gradual reduction in government subsidies higher education is getting more and more costly and hence the need for institutional funding in this area.
The scope of education has widened both in India and abroad covering new courses in diversified areas. Development of human capital is a national priority and common enterprise should be that no deserving student is denied opportunity to pursue higher education for want of financial support. Loans for education should be seen as an investment for economic development and prosperity. Knowledge and information would be the driving force for economic growth in the coming years
    Objectives of the Scheme
The main emphasis of the Educational Loan Scheme is that every meritorious student though poor is provided with an opportunity to pursue education with the financial support from the banking system with affordable terms and conditions. No deserving student is denied an opportunity to pursue higher education for want of financial support.
In short, the scheme aims at providing financial assistance on reasonable terms:
    • to the poor and needy to undertake basic education.
    • to the meritorious students to pursue higher/professional/technical education.
The scheme could be adopted by all Commercial Banks. The scheme provides broad guidelines to the banks for operationalising the educational loan scheme and the implementing bank will have the discretion to make changes suiting to the convenience of the students/parents to make it more customer friendly
