Beware! Lottery frauds enter ‘mobile’ platforms

Express News Service First Published : 07 May 2009 11:08:19 AM ISTLast Updated :

KOCHI: “Your mobile number has won $3, 000, 000 in the ongoing orange INTL draws in UK, your pin is 3432, e-mail [protected]@live.com to claim.”

Have you ever received such a message on your mobile phone? Once-popular e-mail lottery frauds have now entered into a mobile phone phase. In a recent trend, mobile subscribers of various operators have been getting SMSs informing them about winning of huge amounts through draws. IT experts point out that the issue could grow into a controversy as fraudsters were availing themselves of the mobile phone numbers from unknown data sources operating at the international level.

It was about three weeks ago that P Karunakaran Nair of Kochi received a message in his BSNL mobile phone saying that he had won a lottery to the tune of 2, 00, 000 Pounds. He was asked to contact an e-mail ID to claim the amount. Just for curiosity he sent an e-mail. The reply received in the name of Shell Petroleum Development Company U.K from the ID shellpet.[protected]@live.com goes like this.

“We wish to inform you that we are preparing your Certificate of Award and will send it to you as soon as it is ready. Your fund has been deposited with our affiliate bank in Liverpool for security and you are to complete and send the application below immediately to the Foreign Remittance Department of NatWest Bank by E-mail:[protected]@yahoo.com”

“As soon as your application is received, we shall process and transfer your money to you. This process will not take more than 7 banking days if you follow the procedure as directed. Should you have any questions, do not fail to contact me. Regards, Dr Cindy Vall.”

The mail asked him to contact Bill Nikon of Foreign Remittance Department, Natwest Bank, 104 London Road, GB - Liverpool L3 5NL. It said that the fund was deposited in a temporary account at the bank by that organisation. He was asked to mention personal details, including his passport number and bank account number.

IT experts point out that the issue has wider proportions. “The fact that these fraudsters have started sending SMSs should be viewed seriously. In a way it’s an intrusion into our privacy. No subscriber would prefer an operator giving his mobile number to any such organisations. That means there could be an international data storage system that transfers the details to these people. There are portals from which people can send SMSs to many people. May be these fraudsters are depending on similar portals, ” said N C Pradeep Kumar, an IT expert.

Mobile phone operators are also playing a role in these frauds, said an Idea subscriber, who received such a message recently. “The name of the sender was not mentioned in that SMS. That means the message was send with the knowledge of the service-provider. I am planning to approach the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) against these frauds, ” he said.
Dude these ppl r making us fool by telling to pay in customs 2 get our reward's but if v really won the reward y should v have 2 pay v r loyal winner & they should do every procedure 4 winner so dude's never pay anything 4 anything FRAUD like this
