[Resolved]  Uber India — Uber's policy of treating customers as terrorists

Address:Mumbai City, Maharashtra, 400061
Website:www.uber.com/en-IN

This is not a complaint. Rather, it's a question:

I was always wary of downloading too many unnecessary apps on my phone because of privacy concerns. Multinational corporations have a bad habit of getting their systems hacked and then end up giving their customers' details to cyber-crooks. And every company says their servers are secure until some 13 year old computer hacker breaks into their servers and plays the game of 'doctor doctor' with their customer database.

My creator has given me a hand which i can raise to hail a cab on the street. Impossible as it may sound, i was willing to survive without a cab-hailing app. But the pressure from the younger generation in my house was too much. Finally, i relented, installed the uber app and booked a ride which was successful. There were no problems.

2 days later, i tried to book another ride. After several attempts, the app told me that my account has been disabled and that i must contact uber support via email.

When i emailed uber support asking them to enable my account, i was told that i must provide a government issued id proof in order to continue with uber.

An observation:
Google handles my sensitive emails, yet they dont ask for my govt. Id.
I travel in b. E. S. T. Busses & local trains. They face terrorist threats everyday, yet they don't ask me for a govt. Id.
The mumbai, delhi and kolkata metro transport lacs of passengers everyday. Yet they don't ask me for a govt. Id.

Now my question is this:
Is uber trying to tell me that it is doing more important work than these institutions are doing??

If it's a question of safety:
If i perform an illegal activity or a crime during my ride, then uber has my mobile number. I can easily be tracked by turning over my mobile number to the police or any other relevant government authority. The poor "kaali/peeli" driver doesn't even get my mobile number and he fearlessly charges into the unknown every morning by picking up random customers on the street.

Generally, i request the watchman in my building to hail a cab for me. Usually he fetches a cab for me within minutes. No delays, no overcharging. Basically, uber wants the job of my watchman.

How strange would it be if your watchman asked you for your government id before fetching a cab for you? What if, even after taking your blood sample and sequencing your dna, he couldn't guarantee the arrival of the cab in time?

I'm not insulting the watchmen of our country. Rather, i'm saying that the ramprasad yadav standing at my gate can do a better job than an mnc with lesser hassle.

My fellow indians, could it be that we have become so fascinated by technology that we bend over and submit ourselves whenever a phoren company demands our critical data?

My friends, understand that your identity is very precious. You work all your life to build an image of respect and trust in society. Your government issued id proofs are like your password when you wish to connect with the real world.

Mncs themselves valuate their good name at billions of dollars. And they spend millions of dollars in protecting their name. So why are we expected to kneel down, lower our heads and distribute our sensitive information to some uber or boober, like a priest distributes prasad outside a temple?

My question is this:
Are we just supposed to give up our valuable ids to a "taxi bulane wala"? Is it worth it?

Maybe... Just maybe, the next time we wish to be on time for our international flight, we could stop getting terrorized about whether the uber god will send his angel to deliver us?

Maybe... Just maybe, we could go downstairs and raise one hand in prayer...

Maybe... Just maybe, a taxi might miraculously appear!

Complaint marked as Resolved
The company has done nothing to resolve the issue. I'm just tired of picking a fight with a puny insect like Uber.
Uber India customer support has been notified about the posted complaint.

You can use your God given hand to hail a taxi but God has also given a big mouth to the taxiwallahs to say NO all the time. Ask your watchman how many taxis & autos he has to beg for before one agrees to take your fare. That "taxi bulane wala" company is valued at $50 BILLION. When you downloaded the app you said YES to the T&C and basically entered into an agreement. If one doesnt like a service then one can stop using it but next time dont hastily agree only to disagree later. About you case, since you said after several attempts it was disabled. Probably because you kept requesting and cancelling or maybe not cancelling but just requesting. Both rival companies have allegedly created thousands of fake ids who keep requesting their rivals cars and then when it comes simply cancel thereby wasting a lot of time and cause frustration to the driver. On a side not, also, your watchmans job is to watch the building not hail cabs for you. Most watchmen are never at their posts coz they are always running errands for the residents.

Dear Mr. Snk23,

Thank you for your interest in my post.

Please consider:
1. This forum is filled with customers who have been told a "NO" ALL THE TIME by drivers appointed by your beloved company. Take a look around.

2. what is worse? standing on the street to hail a cab or waiting at home hoping the Uber cab will arrive? Because if i sit at home, then i DEFINITELY miss the flight. If i stand in the street, atleast i'm doing something about it. there's always a chance i'll get some kaali/peeli. (never been dissappointed yet)

2. I dont live in the mountains, but a well-known suburb of Mumbai. Neither do I go down beaten-down paths. The first "kaali/peeli" my watchman finds usually agrees. (As you can see in the image: my ride was from versova mumbai to CST international airport). God knows what Uber customers in tier-II & Tier-III cities must be facing!

3. Are you here to redefine the job profile of my watchman/s? Do you assume my gate is unattended during the 30 seconds one of my watchmen takes to find me a cab? We Indians are very efficient, saheb. Scared White man need cab-hailing app's security. Brown man have faith in fellow man and ride kaali-peeli.. What's your problem? is it that "most watchmen are never at their posts" or is it that most watchmen are killing your (company's) business?

4. Uber is a $50 billion company. Understood. Is that why your beloved company is losing $2 billion ANNUALLY, in order to beg customers in India to ride with Uber? is that money spent in trying to cover up the despair of existing Uber customers (and it's drivers)? Uber is a $50 billion company. Understood. Lehman brothers was a 160 year old company. Companies are born, they grow up, then they die. what's your point? Uber is like a spoilt child that has achieved too much power too soon. its amazing that our insignificant, unorganised kaali/peelis are making life so miserable for such a huge corporate behemoth. A case of David fights Goliath :)

5. Can you please show me where on Uber.com's Privacy Policy is it written that I must share my govt. issued ID? If you work for a web-technology company (which I suspect you do), you should know that when I downloaded the Uber app on my phone, I entered into an agreement to share my PHONE DATA with Uber, NOT MY govt. issued ID or my blood type. humko ullu nahin banakeka, saheb. abhie yeh desh bhi padha-likha ho gaya hai.

6. Yes, you are right.2nd time I tried to book the cab, I DID request several times. But that was because everytime I got an error saying that my ride was not booked. Not sure if it's evident to you, but I can read. why would I book again if my ride was confirmed?

7. I am aware that both rival companies have made hundreds of fake accounts. But sir, that is your (company's) problem. I'm no going to hand out my precious data just because the company is facing problems. Google faces bots and fake accounts everyday. How do they manage with just my mobile number? Surely I can do more damage with an email/messenger/cloud storage/social media profile/mobile OS/blogger/web search service than just sitting around in a taxi. Why dont I see them asking for my govt. ID? Your app actually sits on Google! And you need more data than them... Hilarious.

Jao Saheb jao, China mein phir try karo.. Yahan humara dabbawala system first class chalta hai.

P.S. I was sure you wouldn't like it when I called your company a "Taxi bulane wala"... Because sir, that's all it is!
Not half as important as the the other apps sitting on my phone.

Other people reading this, once again you have to ask yourself only one question:
Should you have to present your govt. issued ID just to hail a cab???
