Hathway Cable & Datacom — legal notice for not submitting modem and router

I had a hathway prepaid connection for 3yrs in electronic city bangalore. I got hathway connection with 3 months upfront payment for free modem and router. I opted for that service. Since it is a prepaid connection, i formally send an email to hathway to disconnect my service and close the account.

Now after 4 months, they are coming back asking to return modem/router with legal notice.

Please advise what to do. I have the modem and router at my hometown. I am currently not in india.

Is it a real legal notice or are they trying to fish money out of people by harassment.
